Thanks for this post and the various inputs. It was most comforting to say the least as I read thru. I had been suffering with post scabies bumps for almost a month, applied permethrin twice over whole body, twice only on scrotum and just when the bumps would seem to have gone completely, they would suddenly reappear. I would use tea tree oil every day as well. In fact I noticed the bumps immediately re-appear after sex (which I had when I felt the bumps had completely disappeared). The first time this happened, I felt I re-contracted scabies but I know my partner is clean. But then this repeated when I had sex again after another two weeks (when the bumps seemed to have disappeared). Similar to an experience shared in this post. I did not know what to do, but after reading this post I feel comforted to know these bumps are not re-infestation of scabies. it is strange what causes the bumps to re-appear after having sex (is it extra blood flow in the area, what the hell causes this......)

EXCELLENT series of posts, from the ORIGINAL post to the LAST. My experience with scabies and post-scabies is identical, particularly on the genitals, and including how the bumps reappear after sex, and then vanish without a trace very soon. Several doctors would not listen to me because there were no burrow marks despite maddening itching at night and nodules on scrotum and legs. The first diagnosed blood pressure meds reaction (after a year of taking it?), another agreed, a third said scabies, but she left the practice and did not enter it into record. No meds for me, and so I treated it myself with Sarna and sulfur creams and soaps. It does work, but you have to stay with it (sulfur soap is an excellent multi-use product). Yes, there is a chance that after 8 months I may still carry the scabies. However, as I don't itch at night, and the nodules, bumps, marks and occasional itch appear and disappear randomly, I think I am post. THANK YOU ALL for confirming what I experience.

Thanks everyone for posting. I think I caught scabies in a rare way, not sexual, but still got them. I thought they were chigger bites and scratched but ignored them for a month. Then they "morphed" into patterns around my body where the original bites were. That is when I went to doctor and got diagnosed. I used the cream once and saw no difference and it kept spreading. I used it again a week later and wondered why I am not cured. Having read all of this, I think I am having Post Scabies Syndrome. It is very uncomfortable when it starts itching and it is still intense but I think it is on its way out. I am taking an oral antihistamine twice a day. It helps for a few hours, maybe up to 4 but I still have not had a full nights sleep in 2+ months. After reading this, I am comforted to know I am probably ok. Dead scabies can't stay forever. Although my boyfriend never contracted it, he too was treated twice. It has definitely affected our relationship on several levels since I am so uncomfortable much of each day (caught scratching multiple times a night) and I feel like a "leper" with these bumps. It almost covered my body by the time I finished the second treatment. I have my fingers crossed it will be gone soon.

You should try a penis health creme. In addition to suppressing that itch, these help with skin issues such as discoloration, rashes, dryness, chafing etc. A good one will contain both Vitamin E and shea butter, both of which are great for scars too. This might be exactly what you need. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your story . My son has been suffering for 4 months and every time he gets new bumps I am so tempted to retreat..even the dermatologist won't entertain me anymore. .lol. We just have to reevaluate after 7 months! This was the best clearest story on post nodular scabies syndrome on the internet. Thanks again.

My daughter got scabies from her boyfriend. He went to S Korea for a semester in college & picked it up there. He lived in tight quarters where others had it. Well, if diagnosed incorrectly (highly likely in US), you could have scabies for a long time. The longer you have it, the more infested. We went to 4 doctors. If you tell your doctor others have it around you, high chance it's scabies. Had biopsy & saw it was the scabies mite. Ask for a biopsy. Best place is your hand. You may even see tiny tiny black dot which are visible on palms. If diagnosed early, permethrin will take it away because very few mites are on you. If you go months with it, it's high chance you will need 3 or even 4 weeks of treatment (7 days apart). Neck to toe coverage with perethrin. Don't miss a spot. If you keep applying week after week, permethrin does the job. Along with proper hygiene. If you don't wash bedding towels, clothing daily in hot water/dryer, you will keep getting reinfected. I had two outfits my daughter alternated wearing so I didn't do tuns of laundry. My daughter wasn't allowed to wear anything else. If she had to go out, it had to be an outfit new or clothing that came out of bag sealed for 7 days. I wore plastic cleaning gloves when I disinfected (fantastic or bleach water spray) her room & especially tub & bathroom. We got rid of this I feel because of two main reasons: proper hygiene/cleaning & permethrin. Nothing else works. Top doctor said permethrin does work, but it won't if you keep getting reinfested. Clean, clean, clean! It will exhaust you, but I pretty much sterilized my daughters surroundings, and it's gone. She had it for months. Along with it, you may get a burning red rash. You may need cortisone cream (this does wonders). You may get secondary infections too (blistering bumps). Cortisone cream works for this too. This happens because infection sets in if you scratch too much. Scabies is so hard to treat & diagnosis, but with proper cleaning & proper use of cream, it will work. Don't be sold on anything else. You can take oral medication, for severe infestation, but we chose to stay with permethrin. Bad side effects with oral medication scared us. My daughter gets bumps here and there, but it's no longer scabies(called post scabies syndrome). Why this happens I think her system is still sensitive & certain triggers like stress or tight clothing that rubs could cause this. I read it could happen even up to 7 months/year after scabies is long gone. Hard I know, but I hope our experience helps others. Information is scarce on scabies. More research should be done. My daughter's boyfriend still has it because I feel the one key missing, hygiene. He doesn't take cleaning like I did seriously. Just remember permethrin works, but reinfestation will occur if you don't clean clothing & surroundings properly! One last thing, if you have it, don't touch other people's skin for very long. How it really transfers. Also, my daughter took two baths daily using baking soda in water. This is very soothing to her miserable sore skin. Also, use from wal-mart hypoallergenic lotion, verathrin lotion (spelling), if your skin burned like hers did. Good luck & God bless!

Your story sounds much like mine including the 'leper' word, which I have also used to describe how I feel. I have also been given antihistamine for the night and a corticosteroid cream to put on the itchy bits which I have been using before bed (it's a bind because you have to wash all the places first,0 easy when it's just 1 or 2 but when there are a lot it's hard to remember where you need to put the cream, does that make sense? It's been 3 weeks since my last perm treatment and 2 dermatologists have looked with a kind of magnifying glass at a few of the spots and couldn't see any signs of mites but I have never had a 'scrape' done. Last week I had a night where I didn't have any itching and I was soo happy and dared to feel that this is 'post scabies syndrome'. I even looked after my baby granddaughter for a day. Which was a big thing because I have been so very scared of giving it to her as she has been ill herself for a long time and I would never forgive myself if she got it. Now I'm back to lots of new itching in some places that I had the initial scabies rash but also lots of new ones, even around my face, ears and in my hairline it's sort of sore. The worst thing is that I can't find any telephone helplines or anyone (including GP's and dermatologists0 that really know anything about scabies other that what you can read yourself on the net. Sorry I've gone on a bit but this is not the worst illness I've had but I have never before had this feeling of being so alone and helpless and I must admit I have lost my faith in my body, doctors and light at the end of the tunnel. I wish everyone that is living this hell will recover soon, nobody deserves to live like this, and then they tell you to avoid stress!!

I am nearly 3 months in post scabies and still not okay. I have had scrapings twice and a biopsy on one area because both dermatologist and druggist thought outbreaks after 9 weeks were unusual. However, result was supposedly drug reaction to normal meds I take. Went off all my medications and 8 days later, I am not much better. The itching and red spots continue. One place clears up as another reappears. The itching is less but still very prominent. I don't think my doctor really knows. I am starting to believe post scabies can plague for a very long time. They should tell you that when they treat it.

Please keep applying permethrin. My daughter would see a few spots left (very end of her months long struggle). She is scabies free for a month now. If we can beat it so can you! Keep cleaning so you don't get reinfested. Our Doctor said that permethrin works. He said if it doesn't, it means you are getting reinfested with the mite.

I am a female with a husband and 4 children. . I was very first infected in 1998 by a babysitter that I didn't understand the angst of this issue. At that time it seemed like forever to clear this up for myself and my household. I have very sensitive skin and for myself it seemed to go on forever. My baby had bumps forever as did myself. Finally after permethrin cream and the Ivermectin pill and countless house cleaning and bleaching in hot water we were cured.

It took about 9 months. I don't really know if it was my heebie geebies or physchologucal issues of this happening to my family that it took so long to cure. Did I mention the fact that all of our doctors are at University of Michigan. Like one of the best hospitals and medical systems.

In 2014 at Christmas my then 18 year old son came home from college and said to me "mom I feel like I am so itchy and have scabies". I kinda went wtf he is kidding right and replied you better hope you don't because when you were 18 months old that was one of my biggest nightmares. We then scheduled an appt at U of M. He is a swimmer and over Christmas break had a swim tournament and of course because of the chlorine I think the symptoms subsided.
Well he went to the dr at home and also through the U of M system, he was diagnosed with scabies. Before he told me this he had laid in my huge bed and we snuggled and watched movies together.
I ended up with my very own horrible horrible case of these uncontrollable bit***s. It took him 2 doses of the ivermectin to be cured, also the fact that by that time he went back to his dorm, that had been vacated for 3 weeks, he was cured.
Well my husband that mind you sleeps in the same bed as me cleaned everything up in my 4 bedroom home. He said Mom cannot go near this. She is too acceptable and also the fact that I am a cancer survivor it is way too risky. At that time I was 4 years cancer free.

I have been treated probably 5 times with ivermectin. My daughter and other son were then slightly infected treated and cured. My other daughter whom was also treated never showed signs of it.
NOW
One year later with numerous treatments for myself and going to my dr 2 months ago only for him to say your fine.
I am now completely infected again. Like WTF do I do now. I have treated myself in spots with the permethrin cream that I found in my children's room from 11 months ago, which has totally helped. After my last pcp appt when I showed him the very beginning of another outbreak and telling him I felt like I was being bitten again. He said I was fine, I said great thank you because I can't ever deal with it again. I decided not to keep spot treating because there was not enough permethrin.
NOW after 2 months I am totally infected. My poor beautiful face started with little bumps has now turned into the worst infection. It started in my back and where my breast scars were that I told him this bump has been there for 4 months and he also took a biopsy of, which turned out non cancerous. My pierced ear holes are bitten and bumpy and I haven't put earrings in at all in months. My labia has bumps. My arms, hands, and feet are so itchy at night that I am physiologically impaired. I am going back to see Dr Brinley ( which I used to adore) tomorrow. I will fill you in soon.

The worst nightmare of my life.
Did I mention if I even bring this up to my children they just say MOM you are Crazy.
My husband believe it or not has been pretty supportive as he knows from past experiences I am usually right.
