I've been trying the olive oil trick for stomach gurgling, and it seems to work. 1 teaspoon on an empty stomach seems to be enough for the whole day. (If I have juice or coffee or food too soon after the olive oil, it works less well, however.) Someone said it was about the fatty acids released when the body metabolizes fats, but maybe it's just that when something's stuck, a little oil helps it move along. Who knows? at any rate, it seems to be much quieter, and I'm thrilled.

I started to develop this problem about two years ago. My stomach/intestines would start making uncontrollable noises in class and it caused great anxiety and embarrassment. I avoided tests and a lot of lecture. Because of that i had to stop going to school for a couple of semesters while i looked for a solution.

After ruling out the possibility of parasites, I found that most of the noise was coming from a combination of excess stomach acid and trapped gas, so i took acid blockers and followed with acid reducers, which helped greatly. Probiotics also help (when i can afford it). I also have to avoid dairy products, coffee, and alcohol. I also elevate the upper half of my body while i sleep to let the acids settle down. One last thing that worked out in combination with all of this is exercise, i now incorporate some type of cardio into my routine at least once a week. Now the noises are completely under control, and i've learned how to manage my anxiety issues and not let it take over.

What did NOT help was eating or drinking in class when the noises would start. and taking simethicones (like gas-x) made it worse.
also, drinking fluids with a meal right before class/meeting is not a good idea.

Hi
after reading many posts on this page I am pleased to see Im not the only one suffering in this way, as I honestly thought I was!
my stomach will make really loud noises whenever it pleases, mostly happens when im in class which gets really embarrassing! its uncontrollable and only stops when I get home and chill out. Im starting university soon and this is the only thing im worried about..my stomach making embarrassing noises in class! I've found that when it does make a noise this triggers anxiety and panic which only makes the noises worse...so its a vicious circle I get trapped in.
Have been to the doctors loads and they weren't interested..eventually found a doctor that referred me for lactose intolerance tests as it is in my family and blood tests. Im currently waiting for these results.
This really gets me down as its constant and I never want to go anywhere in case my stomach starts playing up! im only 18 years old and its really getting me down. no one around me seems to suffer from this problem and I have no idea how to stop it.
I used to miss lots of college because id get myself wound up before even going into class about my stomach starting to play up, which only made matters worse. I hate being in quiet situations as Im paranoid my stomach will embarrass me.
People have said its because i 'dont eat enough'.....get the noises if i eat and if i dont eat so cant really win.

I have the same thing. I'm not a big breakfeast person, so I assume its not because i eat to much, but the sound is not like my stomach growling, more a churning, sometimes it seems when I am nervous it acts up, and whenever it does I always "cough" to cover it up. Any ideas to get rid of this to be able to focus in school better?

I have this problem too and it's really bad. I even missed my great uncles funeral because of it :-( I got up that morning and felt like it was going to be really bad that day so I didn't go. It wasn't a huge deal because I hadn't seen him for years and didn't have to go, but I was so mad and upset at myself. I remember going to watch a comedian a few months ago and I was so scared because it was a small theatre and it'd be so quiet, and I was sat really near the front! I really wanted to go though so I did, and my stomach behaved all night. I was so glad I went in the end, I had a great time, but I thought to myself "I should be able to do this all the time without worrying". I would have been absolutely mortified if my stomach/bowels had acted up that night.

I've had this problem for a few years and I'm 23 now. Luckily I'm not in a quiet environment very often at all, my life would be a misery if I was. It is running my life though, I want to be able to go to the cinema/theatre etc. without having to worry.

It rumbles all over my bowels/stomach area ALL the time, especially at night and in the morning. I also have a really bloated stomach. It's just all a big mess! I know anxiety doesn't cause it as it seemed to behave when I was at uni for the most part-and I was very anxious about being in a quiet lecture hall watching SILENT cinema! I have nothing to be anxious about in my life now anyway.

I thought it was caused by diet but I recently cut out all chocolate and bad stuff for 2 months and it seemed even worse if anything!

The fact that I've also got the extremely bloated stomach all the time and very dark circles under my eyes makes me think...parasites, yuck. But I hope it is and I'm going to take a cleanse and hopefully it might help. I really sympathise with the people here, especially the ones in school (which seems to be most of you!). This problem really sucks.

I have had the same problems but i found some things out yesterday and decided to share. my stomach noises have recently been getting louder and more embarassing. I bought some gas x which normally doesnt work for me but i tried it by taking one before every meal for two days. Each meal i didnt drink anything while i was eating incase it would interfere with digestion and my stomach acid. I waited about an hour to drink any fluids. I also made sure to chew really well. And today my stomach was better! It wasnt perfect i might add, but better is better than nothing. I also made sure not to eat anything that would cause me any gas. I ate a plain sandwich (boring but better than being embarassed about my noisy stomach) in which all i put on it was ham, mustard and bread. For breakfast i had a fish patty, and dinner i have whatever i want because no one can hear my stomach at night and its gotta have some break! I hope this helps i know how painful this can be when you are sick and tired of being embarassed and just want someone there for you. You feel lonely but if they get too close you think they will be judging you and laughing at you. Stay happy!

I have the exact same problem with the gut noises, which is a problem if you are at university and have to sit through silent lectures! I find that as long as I dont need #2, I can last without any noises if I take a half an immodium tablet before the lecture and take a snack in with me. Im not sure if the immodium does anything but it at least acts as a placebo to calm me down. Plus the gut tends to settle down after a while so I can actually listen to the lecture.

But this problem is definately genetic for me as both my dad and sister have the same problem

I have had this problem start very suddenly and progressively get worse as I age (started in my early 40's) Loud stomach noises have embarrassed me in church, the hairdresser's chair, at the dentist getting my teeth cleaned.... ie anywhere I am in a quiet situation near other people. I have also been bothered by bloating and intestinal pain. On several occasions, I have had non-medical people recommend I try a gluten-free diet for a few days to see if it helps. I have always resisted.... until now. About 3 days ago, I have made it a point to remove all guten from my diet... bread, pasta. Look up gluten-free to see what it entails. I must say, my intestines have truly quieted down! I do not feel as bloated either! While I do not believe I have Celiac Disease, I do think perhaps I have a gluten intolerance. I have not seen anyone mention gluten as a cause in any of the responses, so I thought I'd make a post in hopes of helping someone out there.... I'll let you know if I stick with it. I do miss wheat bread, but I would make the choice to remove it from my diet forever not to be embarrasses in social situations anymore with a "singing gut"

I am 17 now and about a week ago I heard my friends stomach gurgle really loudly and I wondered what happened. But just the other day my stomach started making that same noise. So I was just wondering if it was contagouse(can't spell) or something.
