I started craving ice right after I gave birth to my 3rd child in 2000. After a couple of months of crunching ice all day long, I just lost the craving and stopped. Two and a half years later I had my 4th child and started crunching & munching ice like a fiend again! I would send my hubby to the convenience store to get a 10 lb bag of ice every couple of days. Not just any ice would do....it had to be the clear, frosty, crunchy ice...not the hard chunks and not the crushed ice either. I would take a little hammer and turn the hard pieces into smaller, crunchier pieces and eat them like potato chips. My parents and my husband and co-workers all thought I was crazy. After a couple of months, the craving went away again just as suddenly as it started. Fast forward to October 2008, I am opening my mom's freezer door to put ice in my glass of tea. I can SMELL the cold dampness of the ice and I put a piece in my mouth.....then I eat a cup full....now I buy my special bags of convenience store ice and put them in the freezer at work with my name on them....People think I am NUTS!! But I am not nuts, just anemic...my hemoglobin is 10.8 instead of 12 +. I knew it the minute I craved ice again! Once my iron is up to normal, the ice crunching will stop again. My dentist fusses about my cracked molar....my mom fusses about the crunching noise when I am at her house....and I make my hubby go down the road to the store with the "right" kind of ice...Oh well, at least I don't do drugs or smoke!!

I am too an ice eater. In the morning; like I read on someone else's statement, I have to have ice, NO COFFEE! It's so bad that if I may not have enough frosted crushed ice left for a full cup in the morning, that nobody better touch it, they have to drink hot drinks. %-) My iron is fine and yes I became addicted when i was pregnant in 88. It came back real bad in 2000. Can't do without it, no way no how. I even like to eat and aspirin or two while I am enjoying the ice. Sounds like iron DEF but it's not. Just habits. By the way guys, Sonic and Smith fields chicken sell bags of he good frosty crushed ice. hey sell it by the bags. Can the ice hurt my blood though?

Hi All.

I just thought that i would like to add my two pence worth, i'm 30 weeks pregnant and have been chewing of frosted and crushed ice for some weeks now, i have just had a hospital appointment which stated that my iron level was a perfect level of 13???? so Iron doesn't seem to be my issue, ironically in addition to this, for as long as i can remember as a child, i craved the frosted ice from my mother ice tray, and snow when ever it fell. I've had these cravings on and off for years, but nothing like what i'm having now, stopping in town and begging Mcdonalds to "please give me a cup of ice", of which they have been most accomodating, work have also insalled a small mini fridge with a freezer section...........which has been a God send.....i feel such a weirdo, but i'd rather craving of ice, then chocolate, cigerattes, or alcohol!!!

well at least i'am not the only crazy woman around here, ( that's what everyone calls me), I started eating ice about 5 years ago when i got my gastric bypass surgery, i do have anemia, I take an iron pill every morning followed by my 3 cups of crushed ice in a foam cup,Yes (it has to be foam, it keeps the ice dry) just like i like it, at least when people tell me your addicted I say, YES, but to the ICE. My mom always gets upset with me when i go to her house cause she has the best crushed ice ever, I bring my foam cup, get my spoon and start munching, I cant imagine living without it, When i take road trips i bring my 5 or 6 foam cups full of ice & munch away, and I also especially like it when its cold outside. Well guys gotto go, TIME TO FILL UP THE CUP!

i eat ice but the only ice i'll eat is the "frosted" type not the clear 'glassy" type of ice...lol as the other blogger, i eat mainly SONIC ice, i by a bag a day and it'll take me about 3 hrs to finish it, it soothes me, i dont have low iron, to me it could be as someone who smokes cigas...to calm them down or whatever they smoke for, that's the same reason-i do it-i love hospital oce, but i eat SONIC bc they sell in a bag and i can go home under some heat and munch away, lol, i am in HOT Lanta, it cools me down_LITERALLY

my mouth literally waters at the thought of eating ice as im pulling up to the store. i started eating ice when i got my tongue pierced 8 years ago. i went from filling ice trays less than half way up, to soaking ice from the ice maker in water to the frosty part, to buying bags from the QT(the 7/11 of GA) and beating it with a mallet til it was crushed. to stop myself from eating it constantly i have retained to getting a cup from QT only while in transit and i get and extra cup for my next trip(when left in the freezer over a night it creates a big hunk at the bottom thats the best part once broken up...heaven). i never leave the house without a cup and im particular about which QT as well. (valley brook and rockbridge rd. in stone mountain and riverdale rd. in riverdale. also hwy 85 in fayetteville ga...sometimes. i even keep a tool handy to crush the ice even more while its in the cup. usually the corkscrew of a wine opener. when i started, i used to refer to them as my cigarettes because i ate ice when i had anxiety, after food, and after sex. i eat even when i have a toothache. my teeth always hurt after a really good cup too(32oz) and sometimes i do feel bloated but i can eat a cup right after a large dinner and feel like i ate nothing at all. anyway i have learned that healthy teeth are a core part of healthy living and they effect your entire body. in addition to having no teeth, if you should have an abcess and the pressure from ice causes it to burst. if you swallow the fluid it can kill you. yes im anemic and my hemoglobin is at a 6 out of 12 being the minimum level. eating does not lower your blood count its just your body's reaction to the lack of iron. try eating red meat and leafy greens to increase your iron and minimize the cups of ice you eat each day. sometimes i have nightmares about my teeth just falling out as i speak and i wake up to check for my teeth.

I am sooooo happy to see that I am not the only person with this addiction. I crave ice and I too have a certain kind that I eat.... I love Milo's Ice ( a fast food restaurant in Al), its better than hospital ice!! I used to eat 6 large cups (32oz) and 1 small cup (12oz) every day, then my car broke down... I thought I was going to DIE! I got moody and irritable and I had to resort to freezing water in cups, which really didn't satisfy my cravings. I starting paying people to take me to Milo's or to bring me their ice. This went on for about a year and since I was unable to get it every day, my tolerance level dropped, but the cravings did not go away. Now that I am driving again, 3 large and 3 small will last me 2 days, so I go to Milo's every other day. The people that work there even know to get mine from the back (directly from the freezer) because it will "crystalize" if it comes from the ice bin and become hard from them having to open and close the bin to make customer's drinks. If its like that, it doesn't satisfy my craving. If I have to go more than 1 day without Milo's Ice, I feel like I'm going to loose my mind. It's CRAZY. For me, eating ice is almost as good as sex! I calms my nerves and even lifts my moods. I am a happier person when I have Milo's Ice in the fridge. I don't like flavored ice, just plain ol' soft ice. Milo's ice is so soft you don't have to chew it, I mush it with my tongue and the top of my mouth (now that you mention it, I think I have lost some sense of taste), its like eating snow... anything this good HAS to be bad for me. Just thinking about it has my mouth watering... well finished this cup, need another one :-D

I just started crunghing on ice a couple of months ago. I just love doing it because it tastes great to me and keeps me buzy. I realized the more I do it, the more I crave for it later on...I never thought ice would be addictive. I also compared it to drinking water and thought it would actually be good for my health since I dont drink a lot of water. Then my friend told me that it could make me anemic. I am planning on going to my doctor to check this out. Any way, I need to break this habbit...turns out no addiction is ever good!!!

guess I figured out that ice is not bad at all. Everyone has something they like and ice is better than chips or other junk! No calories to boot. If your blood tests have come back o.k. so just enjoy it!

I love ice and it's so wonderful to read all of these postings. Ice helps me think. I know I drive other people crazy at work because they have threatened to hide my ice cup! I have been told I was anemic (borderline) and iron pills were recommended. I don't need constipation problems so I try to get iron from other sources (food) and I need to take a multi-vitamin. I love my ice! People make fun of me for "preparing" my ice. I noticed that all of you know exactly what that means. It means softening my ice if it's not already crushed. I get ice from the fridge rinse it a couple of times then fill with cold water and let it sit for a while. When I eat it, it's soft. No damage to the teeth. I must mention that lately I have found that my teeth/gums will feel like the nerves are on fire but then it goes away if I rinse a few times with hot water. Also I noticed that I was eating so much ice, I could feel my stomach freezing and bloating. That sucks. Overall, I love ice!

I'm glad I'm not the only ice crucher. I drink Mint Iced Tea by the gallon and then eat the ice as I go. I had my spleen out in 2002 and have had this "problem" ever since, along with diabetes. I neither before the surgery. As I'm writing this, I'm crunching ice. I like to let it sit in the iced tea to soften it first. Cloudy ice works the best, clear is too hard. My dentist suspected an iron deficiency. I took iron pills for a while and it seemed to help but I'v esince stopped and the cruching continues. I also find it seems to sooth my nerves, while driving my wife and kids crazy!
