I have had moderate success with the throat lump sensation by taking St. John's Wort, and Valerian Root. I did this because so many folks said that stress, and/or anxiety were triggers for this issue. Life is a big ball of stress for many of us, and these herbal treatments seem to help, if only as a placebo. Anyway, good luck to anyone who has this problem, and Hope that all may find resolution.

Hello, I am 22 years old, california, on and off drinker/smoker, and have had this same problem for about a year and a half or so.  I noticed that one of my tonsils, drivers side, was enlarged.  I went to my GP last week after noticing that the feeling of something stuck in my throat got worse, and she told me i had a fever, so prescribed azithromycin and took a throat culture which came back negative.  She said if the symptoms persist, to go see the ENT.  This problem is virtually not present when i wake up,  gets much worse when i drink coffee, and right before it got worse I started wearing my orthodontic retainer again.  I dont know if this caused it to get worse, but i have read that oral candidiasis can cause the same symptoms more common with elder denture wearers (ortho retainer wearers too?).  Other possibilities from what ive read on this thread, GERD/Acid Reflux (my dad has been diagnosed with this, and I was throwing up a lot for a while after turning 21... :]  ), esophagus spasm from stress/anxiety (although i don't feel stressed), or even a Thyroid cyst.  Globus Hystericus, I think, is just the name given to the feeling of something stuck in the back of your throat; I don't think GH is a specific ailment that causes the symptoms.
I am going to schedule an appointment with the ENT next week and give him this same information and see what he says.
Ive noticed that people before have said the same thing but never post results or diagnosis, so I'll try.

So I saw the ENT today and he gave me an endoscopy.  He said it seems like it may be a dryness issue, or drainage, so he told me to sleep on the opposite side that I normally do, and he prescribed me nasal spray to take at bedtime, and to take mucinex chest congestion maximum strength, and continue this for 4 weeks and see if it improves. If it doesn't I may have to go in for an MRI to make sure its not deeper in my tonsil(s).  I will keep you posted.

So, did it get better? its 3 weeks..
I'm in a similar situation and i dont know which tests to push for with my ENT. He is non-committal and says its probably dryness of the throat due to smoking.

This is worrying me mad, leaving me unable to concentrate on anything else..!

Its gotten way better but i wouldnt say its gone entirely.  I also quit with the caffeine (coffee) as he said it was a "drying agent".  I too smoke, which i will be quitting (hopefully) after my last one tonight.  After that I will see if it goes away entirely.  I also practiced breathing through my nose ALWAYS, especially when in bed/falling asleep.  I'll keep you posted.

I have been having this senstaion that something is also in my throat. Mines stays all day and is worst in the morning. When I wake up it feels as though I have a hair ball in my throat and I try gagging and even to the point of sticking my finger trying to grab it but nothing works. I have been going through this for a 1.5 years and I finally gave in and went back to the ear nose and throat doctor. He looked in my throat by going through my nose and he didn't see anything. There is such a thing as having pouches that will hold food in your throat. So you may want to rule that out. I also get really bad strep throat consistently during the years and found out that I have chronic tonsilitis. I am considering getting them removed because that may actullay be the cause of the hair ball feeling that I have been experiencing. I also had a barium test done to check out my esophagus and those results checked out clear so I am not sure if it helps but those are some things that you could ask your doctor about.

Same problem as everyone.

I'm trying something: chugging a pint of warm water. It can't really do any harm, and gets the throat muscles moving to hopefully dislodge whatever is in there. Also, it feels good.

Hi, I'm 29 yr old male. I am experiencing the same exact thing! I feel like something is stuck in my throat, my mouth gets super dry, I have minor hits of mild pain in the throat and my tongue seems to be whiter than normal. I also seem to have a lot of mucus coming down into my throat. Sometimes I don't feel it and sometimes it's all I feel. I'm questioning a few things which I will ask my doctor hopefully tomorrow. It's really dry air in my apartment so that can be a factor. I also switched back to using a tooth brush with one of those cheek and tongue cleaners on the back and every morning now I have this thin layer of stuff that peels off my cheeks and I swallow it... maybe that it getting lodged in my throat... I was also thinking maybe acid reflux... I'm a smoker, I have really high anxiety and sometimes if I feel the slightest symptom of something once I recognize it and if it scares me I will psycologically hang on to that feeling and even exaggerate it to the point that I literally feel symptoms that aren't really there... it's fun stuff let me tell you. I'm a huge hypo condriac so I'm screwed in all sorts of ways. Reading all the posts makes me feel alot better and i'm much less worried about it being throat cancer mainly because I don't experience any of the common symptoms. Any other words of wisdom out there??

do you get the feeling of something being stuck further down too? Could be something like pyloric stenosis, which is generally caused by ulceration to the pylori. My mum had that, she used to gag when trying to eat and had a feeling of being constantly full. She also had difficulty drinking wate, I think that she had this for a long time. have you had a gastroscopy or ultrasound scan?
I would ask your doctor to refer you for a gastroscopy if you haven't had one already.
I hope this helps.

Hey,

I am having a very similar situation as to what you are describing.

sensation of having something stuck in the back of my throat, like a pill.. have to clear my throat . . etc.

I'm also a Voice major in university now studying classical music/singing.

This "problem" is not helping - This is causing an incredible lack of vocal endurance, I'm losing my voice alot faster than usual..

Any new info or tips as to what to do?!

I had the same symptoms for 2 months: sensation of something stuck in my throat lower throat area (this is swelling in the throat--anoying). Better in the mornings but sensation worsened as the day progressed;hard to swallow saliva; dry throat. I ate small bites of food very slowly-- sometimes could not swallow at all (extremely scary). I had simple bloodwork done (prescribed by my Doctor) and was diagnoised with ( H Pylori) Helicobacter Pylori which is a bacteria which causes the above symptoms. It is the same bacteria that causes stomach ulcers. Bloodwork ordered by your Doctor will have results within (2) days. Doctor will prescribe (2) antibiotics taken at the same time and a stomach medicine (same med prescribed for acid reflux) which slows down the acid pumps in your stomach so the antibiotics will work well . The meds are taken for 14 days. Best Wishes

I have been having the same symptoms. I wake up in the morning feeling amazingly healthy and then as soon as I eat or drink anything I get the lump feeling in my throat. I have had some intermittent heartburn, but much of the time it's just the feeling in the back of my throat. I also have a gross taste in my mouth and an increased sensitivity to cold things on my gums. Sometimes I feel like I could gag or cough it up, but nothing comes up when I try. My throat is chronically sore and some days I feel like I'm going to lose my voice. Hot water seems to help.

I've had an x-ray to check for hernia, ultrasound to check gallbladder and liver, blood tests to test for bacterial ulcers, pancreas and liver functioning - all have come back "normal." I saw a gastroenterology today and she has diagnosed me with acid reflux. I'm on Prilosec OTC, 40 mg per day, for 4-6 months unless my symptoms improve. I'm not satisfied with this diagnosis, but she doesn't think it could be anything else. My family doctor told me it was due to anxiety, poor diet, and allergies. I'm convinced it's something with my throat, but they're convinced it's my stomach (acid reflux). At this point I have no option but to wait and see. I plan on seeing an acupuncturist - maybe alternative medicine is an option.
