Male, 28 here. I too have been having these pains for years now. Probably started four or five years ago. The sharp pain from my belly button down to my groin, in a perfect straight line. Been to the doctor back when I had insurance, and he said it wasn't a hernia. But being uninsured now, I haven't bothered to get any second opinions. If I make the sudden move that causes the pain to occur sharply, I don't seem to have any pain after the intital occurance subsides. But if I move slightly and the pain begins and I stop, I'll be sensitive, and the pain will hover, just waiting for me to move sharply to really sting.
I can stand up straight when I have the pain, but I have to be careful as to how I move, else the pain will occur.
I've noticed that it's usually related to pressure on the belly button. Like this week, I've been wearing jeans that as I've discovered, are a little too tight around the waist. So the pain has been occuring throughout the week. Just 20 minutes ago when I laid down on my couch and arched the lower half of my body forward to adjust, and I felt the pain. Sitting a certain way and heavy lifting can also cause the pain. But not all the time. Mostly, the pressure against my belly button is the main cause of the pain.
I hope it's just a muscle strain. The last thing I can deal with right now is a hernia. It's painful, and it really sucks. But a strained muscle is much better than the alternative.
Sometimes when I have the pain, urinating will make it worse. But that's pretty infrequent. I usually can pee with no problem with the pain, I just hold my lower belly area below the button out of habit.
Wow. I'm 18 y/o (male) and have the same symptoms, though it doesn't seem like mine are as severe. Not that it isn't painful, because it is excruciating on a level that I don't think a lot of people understand. But usually if I just don't stretch out I can still walk around and it's weak enough for me to be able to handle it. Either way, I haven't been to a doctor because I figured I would get the response that most of you did. "We don't know" or whatever. But I guess I should give it a shot, now that I know there are other people with this and that I might get lucky and find a doctor who can figure this out. Ironically, I plan on going to med school myself, so if I don't get an answer I guess I'll just suck it up for seven years and then try my best to figure this out. Kinda disappointing to finally look online, only to find that everyone else is just as confused as I am. But good to know that other people are concerned and working to try to figure this out.
It sometimes happens after sex (monogomous, heterosexual male), and has been going on for about a year and a half. I don't recognize anything else that triggers it. I'm a martial artist and do parkour frequently, so I'm in good shape and very active and push my body relatively hard. I also worked sheet metal construction for a summer and did a lot of heavy lifting and pretty physically taxing work. But none of that ever seemed to have anything to do with it. The reason I got on and looked for this today was because I was riding my motorcycle and as soon as I swung my leg over to get off I felt like my stomach was empty for about half a second, and then it turned straight into that same terrible sharp pulling pain. I wish I knew what triggered it, if anything.
Thanks for all of the info, everyone. Hopefully somebody will figure something out soon. And, if not, hopefully I'll be able to in a few years.
Now waiting to get in with urologist to see what they're willing to do.
I have been fighting with this since I was around 14 years of age. My first one kind of scared me and I thought something was going to burst inside my stomach behind my belly button .... I remember I would just lay down and put my knees up and try to avoid going pee because I didn't want that pain you get at the very end of emptying your bladder. Also going number 2 would hurt or strain that same whatever you use when your finished going . In all cases if I did use the bathroom when finished I would just return to wherever it was and put my knees up lay on my back and wish that after an hour or 2 of lying there when I got up the pain would be gone, and usually it was. This was strange to me, I never could figure it out and never could quite fully explain to my friends or family what my symptoms where.
I learned how to cope with it and new the trick until about 11 years ago at the age of around 27 I had another attach come on me and it has not left me since , I have to constantly watch the way I move or lift , and if I strain to much in a day I know that going pee is really going to hurt so I do little as often . For me know the pain in slightly different from when I was younger now it feels almost as if my stomach is soar and strained , but if I do to much I get the pain that everyone else is talking about on here, which blows my mind. I thought I was the only one, or that I had some kind of stomach cancer. It really kind of freaks me out sometimes, the pain that you get when it comes on strong , almost feels like something is going to burst inside of you, especially when emptying your bladder.
I feel for each and everyone one here , and if someone finds the solution or fix please keep us informed , It really does affect the quality of life when your always trying to protect yourself . I do most of my life sitting , because walking tends to inflame what ever it is , I just miss being the active person I once was . God bless everyone and hope will find a way
hey bret , I wouldnt mind talking with you about this, just want to be sure , I cant imagine someone messaging with how intense the pain can get thanks
I know exactly how you feel. I have had this pain since I was in my early teens, but a year and a half ago I went on a hike and it started pulling...and never stopped. I have lost everything that used to be important to me: my job (because I can't be on my feet much longer than 20 minutes), my track scholarship (I haven't been able to work out in a year and a half), and my self-confidence. Last year I seriously considered killing myself to get away from the pain. I have seen at least 8 specialists, all of whom looked me over, ordered a few tests, and then told me there was nothing they could do for me. I can't do anything that I used to enjoy. I don't know what I'll do if no one figures this out, because I can't live the rest of my life like this. I'm so sorry this is happening to you too, but I don't feel so alone now that I know someone else has had it start and never stop. I would willingly put up with this pain once or twice a year like I used to, but now it is with me 24/7 and it is unbearable.
I have done a lot of research on this, because it has plagued me for the last year and a half. I am without a doubt 100% sure that the culprit is our Medial Umbilical Ligaments. Go to Google Images and search "medial umbilical ligament". The structure looks just like a string that is extending from the back of the navel straight down to the top of the bladder. This would explain why the pain worsens at the end of the urine stream, because as the bladder "deflates", it pulls the medial umbilical ligament downwards. Sound familiar? Fortunately, the umbilical ligaments (you actually have quite a few, but the medial one is the largest, and seems to be the one giving us difficulty) are a nonessential part of our anatomy, and can be removed without any physical consequences. These ligaments are basically "leftovers" from your natal body (nutrients flowed through the navel and were dispersed by these umbilical ligaments), so I have a strong suspicion that the problem we are having is that our ligaments are simply too small. I am considering seeing my doctor about having mine removed soon. I would strongly encourage you to do the same if this problem is persistent for you like it is for me. Good luck to you all!
please let us all know what your doctor tells you. i'm really getting desperate!
I totally understand and there is a comfort knowing your not the only one , thank your for your post. Im sure there are others looking also so I hope they find this.as I have. I searched about 4 years ago on line for a couple days and found nothing with the symptoms I had so finding this thread really helps me have more hope . If I find anything out I will post on this board and share . As for right now I am going to drink lots of water as I have read people on this board say it could be hydration and wish for the best. Thanks again and wish you the best!
this sometimes happens to me but i would pick the lint and the pain will go away
I have had it many times so far, it comes and goes and really hurts, kinda sharp pain behind the belly button... It must be some sorta cramp whereas sitting for a long time hunching and then suddenly standing up streching the belly makes it almost certain to happen. By the way, It isn't likely to be anything serious else we all had died many many years ago :D
Im a 19 year old male and this is happening to me right now. Its a sharp pain in behind the belly button its like a string that tightens up so much that i have to slowly work my way into standing up straight and even then i barely can. This has been happening to me every once in a while since i was very young probably 12 and normally only happens once or twice a year and subsides but this time its not subsiding (Its been about 3-4 hours maybe more) and is worse than ever. It seems to occur after ive been slouching over and then try to stand quickly and its feels like im a being stabbed and if i stood up quick enough i feel like this "string" would snap its very scarey especially since i don't have health insurance. Does anyone have some remedies i can use to help subside the pain when it happens or prevent it.
I know that feeling ... My advice that I would say from reading these threads would be make sure you are plenty hydrated with at leas 6 to 8 glasses of water a day , and they are also referring to maybe some kind of yeast infection so there are different ways of fighting yeast but you can google and find out more on that.
It does feel like some kind of muscle strain but who knows if it works it works , I have been drinking tons of water with silver lately , and high dosing on vitamic c , .. I feel like its getting a little better but maybe Im just wishful thinking . Anyways just my thoughts , I started at the first page of this blog from part 1 am trying diffrent things that people have posted and hope I can beat this, its no fun when you cant play. In the meantime post back if you try something that works for all of us to read, Thanks and God bless
Okay, there are several causes which end up feeling that strange, constant, dull pain behind and around the belly button 1. Sitting a lot ( stand up, walk and bend downwards for some time. You need to change your lifestyle ) 2. Lifting something heavy ( take a rest ) 3. Gas ( take anti-gas pills and review your daily menu ) 4. Pregnancy ( it will be gone after pregnancy if doing regular exercise ) 5. Prostate problems ( consult your doctor ) 6. Masturbation and erection for a long time ( change your sexual behavior ) 7. Straining to urinate or defecate ( change your diet ) 8. Appendicitis ( visit your doctor asap ) 9. Large or small intestine infection ( you need antibiotics ) 10. Urine tract infection ( you need antibiotics ) 11. Drinking alcohol and caffeine a lot ( cut down on drinking alcohol and caffeine and have more water instead ) 12. Kidney infection ( you need antibiotics ) 13. Sitting in a draft ( keep your back, sides and belly warm for some time ) 14. Constipation ( take some medicine you need to defecate ) 15. Hernia ( consult your doctor ) 16. Pressure on your belly ( do not wear tight jeans or pants for a while )
Thank you Hamedan. A lot of those applied to me. I've since reformed these issues, and I haven't had the problem in a while. Hopefully, it stays at bay. If nothing else, I know that cutting down my pop intake probably helped the most. I drink too much damn pop.
