First let me say that I am relieved to see that there are others that have those strange pain. I lost a girl to this pain because she thought it was an std that the doctors didn't know about yet. It is not, it just feels like a drill sergeant is poking his finger into your belly button as hard as he can.
It usually strikes me when I have been sitting for a while in the same position and then suddenly stand too quickly, it just snaps in, but...
I HAVE A FAST PAIN RELIEF FOR WHEN THIS CONDITION STRIKES!!!
The unbearable part is over in a minute or 2, and its just a memory within 10 minutes every time...
When you feel the pain come on, get to the bathroom. Stand as straight as you can(which will be mostly hunched over) in front of the toilet, and completely relax your abdominal muscles and penis. It will start to burn, a lot. Do not, do not, flex your abs or penis. A little pee might come out, let it(if not don't worry, there's just absolutely nothing in your bladder). Slowly bend backwards at the hips and try to stand up as straight as you can, stretching your lower abs and upper crotch where the pain is. When you get as far as you can go, you'll know the time, start trying to push pee out. This will really really burn for about 15 to 20 seconds, but just keep trying to push out as much pee as possible. Only a few drops will come out, and you might feel like you need to massage a few drop through, which is fine. After about 15 or 20 seconds the pain will come to a head and then slowly begin to dissipate. From there normal breathing patterns return and I can slowly get back to what I'm doing.
For ladies, I would imagine the same thing would work, if you just substitute the penis for your clitoris.

Suffering from this same condition, my friend told me a story of his Grandfather who was having similar pains and whose bellybutton honestly became untied! This scared the hell out of me, but I am doubting a bad tie job on the old ombi cord is to blame. I just got this feeling again today after eating a meatball sub and going right to play street hockey with my friends. I am a 23 year old male, so I doubt it is a female-only problem. I am just being humorous, but honestly what helps me with this is a warm bath or to sit/lie down and push my gut out like a real fatty. My one thought is "could this be from excessive masturbation?" My one fear is I blew out my baby machine. Does anyone have a real answer?
same thing for 22 yrs, comes and goes every few months, dont know why sometimes it lasts for hours. going to the doc in a bit because this time its pretty bad and dosnt seem to be going away. if I get any usefull info I will post for you guys. Really glad Im not the only one out there with this.
wow I am SO glad I looked this up. I am a 34 year old female. Currently 18 weeks pregnant and I'm experiencing this pretty badly right now. I think I've felt it off and on for a very long time, but with the pregnancy it has gotten MUCH worse. I've had a bit of issues with my pregnancy and thought that somehow it was cramping tied to all of that which had me VERY frightened. But now I think back and maybe have always had it but just way worse now. I'm guessing because of the added weight from the pregnancy.
For me I know it's not gas, or dehydration, actually since I've been making SURE I'm getting enough water and boy does it hurt when urinating! It makes sense to me this is structural and like I said, I believe that the pregnancy for me is making it worse. I think I had it before but just always blew it off. Now it's more common, which would make sense because of the added pressure/strain. It also lets me worry less about the pregnancy, I was thinking it was something wrong with me and the baby and because of my other issues this pain had me seriously worried!
Anyways, in the very least it gives me some info to go by and research.
BTW doctors think I'm nuts as does my mom. My husband has just basically been worried but everybody acts like they have no idea what i'm talking about. When I tried to tell the doctor he tried to tell me it was round ligament pain, but that didn't make sense to me since it's not in the same area. I experience the round ligament pain but this feels different.
Anyways, at least I don't feel so alone! thanks!

I too have had this pain for several years, and recently went to the Doctor because it became to much...as soon as I told him I had a sharp "pulling pain" around my naval, he told me he wanted a urine sample and it wasn't a minute later he came back and said I had a bladder infection. The pulling pain is from the bladder and letting us know "something" is going on. He told me a lot of women tend to ignore UTI symptoms if they are not severe and then the infection travels on up to the bladder.
This may not be the case for everyone, but felt I needed to share what I had learned and hopefully help someone else!
Good luck to all!!!

I'm a 36 year old male and have been having these symptoms 3 or 4 times a year for as long as I can remember.
For me it's 100% attributable to having too much sugar in my diet. As a kid I'd get it when visiting my Grandparents due to the large number of sweets and biscuits they would ply me with. These days, a trip to the cinema combined with a large Coke and a bag of Pick & Mix is very likely to bring on the belly button pain.
The solution for me is not to overdo it with the sugars!
Having read earlier posts in this thread, it sounds like the sugars could cause some kind of yeast imbalance which in turn causes the pain.

I have the same exsact problem & I'm 14 . I've had it since I was about 12 . I told my doctor & she said she didn't know what was wrong with me . So I just thought like "oh hey it's nothing ." & then today I woke up & I had the pain my bellybutton . So I went to the bathroom . & then as I was peeing oh my god . It was the most worst pain I have ever been threw I started screaming & crying holding my stomach . & so I stoped peeing because I couldn't take the pain . Then the pain stoped .. I waited a second & then hurried up & took the pain Again & went pee . & I started screaming in pain again . Then when I was done I tryed to sit up & walk but it hurt so badly . I had to hold my back to a hunch . But it still hurts . I don't know what is going on . I really would like to know if I'm okay . I'm 14 & this doesn't seem so normal .
OK SO YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE ALONE.bOY i NEVER KNEW SO MANY PEOPLE SUFFER LIKE THE WAY I DO.Anyways i have been suffering from the last two years with thiese sharp bellybutton pain that restricts you from standing up ,sitting straight, peeing ,sh**ting and god knows whatelse and then it leaves on its own after a minute to a couple hours .It happens occassionally and i had done tests seen doctors and all.Reports were negative and doctors told it was nothing .I thought it was an std before hat.But now i dont think it is. I never had proper sex except oral that too with a clean single partner abnd that too superficial. You cant have such a weird std that no doctor can predict. Stds have their symptoms that can be demarkated from other causing a bellybutton pain.I have thought over it and would like to share ,itf it helps me and all of u.
Actually we are shating our stories that have similar symptoms but it would be very wrong and stupid on our part to seek a common cause. There can be nothing common between your pain and mine xecpt the symptoms. That is because it is happening on the area that is the bellybutton and it causes similar results. Bellybutton is damn sensitive. If poke ypour finger forciveley you will strange and hurt s well. This is what the muscles and nerves and tendons are feeling from within when it happens. See ,the issue is straight if you had any organic defect or stone or any such damn disease you would not have felt it so ocassionally and unknowingly ain`t it?It would have been regular. That is what common sense tells. Now the reasons can be a plethora from apendicitis to hernia to a muscle pull,to a nervous problem on the bellybutton, constipation ,yeast infection, dehydration, anxiety, depression,to gall stones,to stds(something i think wold be predicted by doctors and tests),to uti,to irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis, mere over eating and acidity, mere gas issues, bladder problem, tension on the bladder, less than adequate water drinking,a tissue rupture, yeast infection, pregnancy or menstrual issues for women ,endametriosis mostly in women. Oh lord do we ever finish.
Now ,the thing is you got to be your own doctor sometimes and sometimes you should not be because what i have gatherd from all the infos doctors can conclude to a medication to the issues if the ereason is flat on the face ,like an uti or a stone or appendix or stds and likewise the issues that are there in the body and can be detected through tests and medications. Now if you have an irritable bowel sybndrome issue and thats what causingg the pain if you arte too stressed and have eaten something very bad ,or gas or poor digestion or depression something that is not present when tests are carried out or when you visit them they can never tell you what it is. So initially get things tested and start negating the symptoms. If you get something in your tests well and good if they are curable you will get cure ,if not tough luck. Now if you dont get anything in tests and all like my case the trouble is more because you are fighting an unseen enemy. In such a case try to be very careful eat healthy ,take care of bowel movements and destress yourselves through yoga and exercise. Thes pain may not recurr after a period of time so dont be depressed cause that is the worst you can do to yourselve ,be paranoiac about it. Remember you dont have the pain everyday even if you have it once in a while you arae strong enough to deal with it. dont worry it will go away. This was long but i criusly think it would help us get out of the confusion. I am no doctor however just a lad of 21. :-)

Wow, i'm experiencing this right now, im trying to get to sleep but i cant even lie down because of this pulling pain,
I think some of you may be right that it could be musular, i've had a lazy day today and been sat at the pc sorting through a ton of emails and job applications, etc. and think i might have stood up too quickly. Also true that the pulling pain is there when i pee.
Might try the old rice in sock remedy, and if it doesn't work or doesn't go away after a few days i'm off to the docs...if mine pulls anything miraculous out of his hat then i'll be sure to let y'all know!
Sure is a relief to know i'm not crazy, even if the doc might think i am! xx

Have any of you all ever tried Toradol (Ketorolac)? When doctors could not find out what it was for me, they would give me this shot and it would make the pain go away in 15 minutes. It's basically a pain reliever and it does a good job of relieving the pain until you get another incident. Basically it sedates that incident for that time.
I also later found out that they have a pill version for it which you can get but you must get it prescribed as it is not an over the counter medication. Please note that the pill takes about 45 - 1hr to take full effect. They prescribe them in 10mg tablets.
These pills are not recommended for the long term use.

It does make sense that the pain is indeed caused by a muscle tension or pull. With this said, it is very easy for the pain to extend to your groin area. Although the cause and affected area is your lower abdomen. I too suffer from this, and i think that anyone could if they pull a certain way. I also have a theory that it was something we all did in our youth that started the trend, like maybe the only reason few of us and not others get this pain, is because we damaged a part of our insides so it gets pulled much easier than others. And when u think about it u use that exact part of ur body to pee. maybe thats why its connected in a certain way
My doctor said this is extremely common, and there are many different reasons for it. In MY case, he said after doing an exam, is thin skin in my navel. He said skin on the abdomin will stretch differently depending on how your umbilical cord healed. In some cases, too much is cut off at birth and when the child hits a growth spurt the skin will be stretched too thin, which causes the sharp pulling "thread" of pain. I mentioned syncronized pain with my clitoris, and the jist is the large bundle of nerves are close so its not abnormal that they should be affected.
From all of the posts, it seems different things trigger it. For me its working out and before my period (when I'm bloated.) He recommended lotion and a hot towel. Without surgery theres no real cure, so this is the next best thing. :-)
Hope this helps!

Haha wow. I had no idea other people had this problem too. I'm Male, age 20, athletic, and have been having these same symptoms for awhile. I just had the same feeling again and I got curious about what it could be. I have already had appendicitis so it can't be that. I know I don't have a hernia because i get regular physicals.
Usually what I do is urinate and just ignore the pain, it does make it feel a little better. The other thing I do is lay on my back curled up, and slowly stretch out straight. Doing this a few times for me makes it go away.
As for causes, I figure it's something non-threatening like muscle cramps. I noticed today that I ate a lot at once about 2 or 3 hours ago, and right after i was in a curled position for an hour or two.
Just try slowly stretching at your own pace or applying heat. Treat it like a mucle cramp to see if that helps you.
Also, DON'T LET THE INTERNET SCARE YOU INTO THINKING IT'S APPENDICITIS RIGHT OFF THE BAT. I have had it, any you will probably know if you have it too, because you will be puking all over the place curled up in a ball of pain (and the pain doesn't go away).
Hope this helps.

omg i had the same pains since i was like ten and now im 14. the pain starts at my navel and rips downward
but it only lasts for like a minute and then it dulls out. it happens when i stretch and u guys have the same thing and me
it cant be gas or ovulation or pregnancy and i hope its not appendicitis cuz that would be bad
i am an athlete too i run and jump hurdles i don't know if its because of that
i havent asked anyone else about it
i was really scared and i thought i was the only one, someone needs to diagnose it
i really want to know what it is because no one in my family has this problem and i live in a normal suburb place
someone please help me, all of us who asked

For those out there still wondering, at least the girls. I found a real solution!! I have had this pain for the past 5-8 years and have had ALLL kinds of tests and cat scans, ultrasounds and blood work and nothing was found. I had a umbilical cord hernia repaired and thought that could cure it and it did not. Not even close. I just had a laperscopy done recently and they finally found a problem. Its called adenomyosis. Look it up and see if sounds close to what your going through. I have a sharp ripping feeling that goes from my belly button down through my uterous and thats even caused by this from the nerves that connect everywhere down there. SO girls out there with the problem still look up ADENOMYOSIS!! Or ask a doctor
