I'm a 45 year M who first had right hip pain at 23 and have suffered very similar things to alot of you. This was around the same time my lumbar spine gave way on me. After xrays, a hospital stay and a few weeks of rest evrey thing settled down. Then occasionaly at night my right hip ached to the point of madness. Moving my hip it would give a pop but not releive the pain which was a deep ache, burning sensation. This has kept up on and of over the years untill my back went on me again in 2001. 3 bulging discs, iminged nerves a trip in the ambulance and once again in hospital. After this settled the right hip started driving me mad again. Sleepless nights and using a pillow inbetween my knees did give a little releif. The right hip started to give way on me when when walking. The pain so intense in what felt to be the ball of the joint I would buckle over. This did'nt happen all the time it may have weeks apart and hay have only happened once or twice at a time. I had had enough, went to the doctor who referred me to a specialist and had bone density studies perfermed with contrast. This showed mild arthritic change in my right hip joint.

The Doc said no more walking distances or high impact impact activity. I had'nt done much of this scince my teens anyway. Scince then my hip seemed to be getting no worse or better. June 2009 my back gave out on me again. This time it has taken some some months to get an improvement physically and mentally. The CT on my back actually showed less, much less problems than the one in 2001. Now this was getting me confused and my hip pain still there. I am still not back at work full time but currently doing a gym core strenghtening program.
I have been seeing a Physiotherapist twice a week for months. My personal trainer at the gym in my first session with him said one leg was longer than the other. Well this had never been picked up before. We discussed my past history. Lumbar back problems, severe pain in the right hip and rarely in the left. His concern was hip displacement, pelvis misalignment considering my flextion at the hip, L and R, is about 15 deg. max. During my sessions in the gym I have a 20mm/3/4" packer under my right foot which brings me in line. I can not start building my core untill I get more flextion generally so I'm have musckle release therapy and stretching in the gym which really gets my left hip/groin popping when sitting on my backside.

Sorry for rambling on but if this helps anybody thats great. So.. the problem I am having now is my hips have become almost unbearable and seems to be scince they are trying to align my pelvis. Looking back to my first Xray there was mention of possible slippage of the right femur during growth. This is sort of like a dislocation but not. I have now done quite a bit of research. I also used to suffer numbness on my outer thighs when laying on my back which would'nt take long to occur. The nerve running through the groin gets impinged and with stretching at the gym at least that problem is gone. Pelvis misalignment is quite common but perhaps causes problems in a few. Generally I feel great after the gym sessions but it does'nt last long enough. I'm going back to the Doc this week to ask for more investigation into my osteoarthritis progression.
Points Im making are Osteoarthritis can start young, exercise and stretch, keep weight down if you can with a good diet, think of pelvis alignment. I may have missed the boat with getting myself right without hip relpacements but i'm giving it a good shot.

i'm 20. it seems as if everything that is occurring, it's within the 19-25 age range. strange. anyways. same symptoms. it started with a REALLY sharp pain in my right side, just by my rib cage. it would be so bad that i would just want to fall over. sharp stabbing pain, it'd only last for a split second. then it started in the left side as well. i went to the doctors when it got to the point where it was happening multiple times within an hour. thought it was my kidney, that came back negative. and unfortunately i don't have any insurance so they didn't want to do any other tests because money was a then it started in the left side as well. after i went to the doctors and they ruled out my kidney it seemed to stop. about a month after that it started coming back. and let me tell you, it came back with a vengeance. the pain lasts a bit longer and when it comes i have to hold my breath, breathing in feels like instead of just someone stabbing me, it feels like someone stabs me and then when i breath they twist the knife. it's bad. and since then, i have also started getting this pain in my right hip bone area. it's very uncomfortable. feels like someone is putting constant pressure on the area with their knee. so those of you who are going to the doctors, let us kids know what they say!!!!! it would be wonderful to know if i need to go to the doctors versus just blowing it off for money issues.
thanks!

Hi,
I am 69 years old, a long time cyclist. I am having the same symptoms as the first post. I get a sharp pain almost like an electrical shock, a few seconds later another one, a few seconds more another, and the the pulses happen rapidly, sometimes up to 20 hits, and then it's gone. NO other pain, no inflamation or tenderness, everything is normal except when the pain pulses start. Moving around or pressing on the joint has no effect. I can't seem to cause any pain in the joint by moving or massage. VEry strange !!! . All of this just started last night. I hope some comes up with an answer

I HAVE HAD THESE ISSUES AS WELL.
FIRST OF ALL, DON'T PANIC! YOU'RE GOING TO BE FINE.
MOST OF THESE ISSUES ARE DUE TO IMPROPER POSTURE AND LACK OF PROPER MOTION. (EXERCISE)

GOOGLE THESE: Piriformis syndrome, and also check out Pete Egoscue's web site and book "Pain Free"

Please, please, read the first 3 chapters of the book then go to the stretches/e-cises for you pain/problem.

You'll thank the Lord you did!
Get well soon. ; )

been reading posts and can't believe how common this is.
i starting suffering with sharp pains like i was being stabbed with a needle in my left hip after sitting when i got upsince last summer.they only lasted for a while but i was also noticing that i couldnt sit in certain chairs or for to long without my hip hurting.
i had before this started done a number of long car journeys so i put it down to not being able to stretch for long periodsnbut it didnt stop so i put it down to the fact i have had whiplash in my lower back a number of times and was somehow connected.i couldnt decide whether to go to doctor as most of the time i was mobile and could do normal things apart from sometimes sitting comfortably!
however i woke up the other week early in the morning after a bad day with hip and lower back day before to find i couldnt move without my hip having spasms that felt like i was having contractions in it.it was agony!the only way i could stop it spasaming was to lie on my front very still.
to cut a long story short after nhs direct, out of hours doctors and surgery(saturday)i ended up in a and e.i had x rays done and blood tests but nothing found.apart from a swollen hip joint inside (according to out of hours doctors not hospital )was given diazepan,co co-codamol and diplofenic(pain killers and anti imflammatories) and told to see g.p monday.my g.p told me to carry on with diplofenic till packet ended and see if o.k.
well they ended yesterdayand i now have been left with a slightly numb foot on that leg and the toe next to my big toe i can barely feel it has gone quite dead(since day after hospital) and i am now getting bad cramp pains in my lower back thigh above knee and shin sometimes but no extreme pain as of yet so dont know whether i should go back to g.p.
help! x

It is a malignment in your back that is causing this ailment. Instead of getting costly MRI and taking pills, please see a Chiropractor. I guarantee that with treatment, you will be able to walk with less pain and eventually the pain will subside.

Could be bursitis or there may be a slim chance that you could have a type of hip dysplasia.

I'm 27 and have had this problem in my left hip and often my right one too since I was a kid (10yrs). It comes and goes and sometimes I can go months and months without having it, but recently it is more and more often. At the moment, it seems to be linked to when my immune system is also suffering as I get it very bad when I've got a cold/flu/stomach bug etc. Also, seems to happen more when I'm away from home and I thought maybe this is b/c I do regular yoga at home but not when I'm travelling..I've had sessions with lots of different people for this and no-one really knows what to do. The best thing when it's really bad is heat - I often have two hot water bottles strapped to my hips!! Tiger balm is also good for relieving pain. Interesting what one person wrote about sleeping on one side etc, I always sleep on my left. Will try the pillow under my legs.

I go through a similar pain, but mine is the left hip, and the sharp pains sometimes radiate down the back of my leg, to my knee. I fractured my hip in 4 small hairline fractures about 10 years ago. I've experienced this sharp pain several times in both hips ever since, about once or twice a year. When I go in for scans, the doctors can't find anything wrong. I don't want to be medicated for the rest of my life, so what do I do?

I'm 20. I'm glad I'm not the only person who's experiencing this. Where it doesn't get really bad, every once in a while I feel like there's something pinching a nerve in my left hip... right where my leg and my body connect. Embarassingly enough, it also gets bad during sexual activity; I've had to stop and straighten my leg out all the way to get the pain to stop. Any ideas?

I was having some sharp pains in my hip out of nowhere, when I started to be more physically active because of work, working out, etc. It started out as a really sharp out of nowhere pain, went away a few weeks, came back again, and over time became more frequent, but also started going from a sharp pain to more of a throbbing pain. It was located right in the joint and worrying the c**p out of me because I am only 21, and didn't want to see a doctor or have to go through surgery. I was telling one of my friends that is going to school to be a doctor and she said she had a friend with the same problem and he started taking a ton of Glucosamine (yes the stuff old people take to help their joints). I figured I had nothing to lose but some cash, and if it helped my hip it would be worth it. I started to take "Joint Juice" in a canned form, that tastes pretty good (like fruit punch) and at first nothing happened, but after taking it every day for 2 weeks my hip pain has gone from waking up every day with it to gone. I am not sure that this is because of the joint juice, or just by chance but I figured I would tell anyone who wanted to listen in case it helps them, I plan on taking joint juice for a while to see if the pain comes back or if it is gone and really helping.

Hi wow most of this is how I am feeling too, I am trying acupuncture tomorrow and I sure hope that works because I have had this life sucking pain in my hips and femur for about 15 days straight now and the only time I get any relief is if I am lying down (only works for a short time). I have been taking 2 extra strength Tylenol and Ibuprofen to get some relief but that has only helped take the swelling down in my buttock a bit. The pain is now affecting my right side too, I thought at first it was sciatica but it is not that. My femur hurts to and my it band is tight and my groin is tight and painful too, but the spasms are in my left buttock. I don't believe in doctors cause they just give you pills but my chiropractor is at wits end and does not have any more ideas. I have tried massage too, but that just increased the pain and swelling. I think this pain is worse then giving birth to an elephant would be and I really could use some help to make it go away. I am 37 years old and had sciatica before and thought that was bad, but man nothing tops this one. Please help

I'm a 19 year old girl. I've been experiencing sharp stabing pains in both my hips. It's like someone is stabbing me with a needle. When it started, it only hurt when I stood up and walked around a bit, but now it's hurting even when I'm sitting down. I don't know what is causing it. If you find out what's wrong, please let me know, and I'll let you know if I find anything.
