I have also been experiencing this type of pain for years. I am a tall (6'-5") 27 year old male and have a pretty active lifestyle. It seems like it mostly flares up when I do yard work or bending down to put my son in the car. It has also occured when laying back with my feet on the floor (laying on a bed with legs over the edge bent at the knee). That is probably the worst time it has happened which froze me in agony for 5 minutes that I couldn't move.

Sometimes I can go months before it reoccurs, but other times it seems to happen every other week. After the first onset, for 2 or three days I have this stabbing/sharp pain in the back of my right hip. It is debilitating to the point where I can't even move. That is really the only place it hurts and it tends to subside if I stop moving. The last time I had a bad flare up I tried and acupuncturist and it did nothing but cause me to have to get in and out of the car 2 more times than necessary. Someone had written about how they have the tendency to favor on side of their body in anticipation of the pain. I think that I may be doing the same thing to compensate for it even when it is not hurting. I notice that if I just get up without thinking about it, it doesn't hurt but if I get up slow to avoid the pain, I seem to tense up and that's when it brings on the pain.

I guess for now I may try to have better posture and perform tasks more centered and not favoring one side. I would go to a doctor but from what other people have said it seems to be inconclusive and probably a waste of time.

If anyone finds out anything be sure to post. It looks like a lot of people suffer from the same pain.

Yesterday, i was walking out into my back yard and my crutches slipped on the ice, i corrected myself with what seemed at the time like very lucky escape. my broken ankle was fine. but all of a sudden, i had this creeping pain that arose almost right on the hip, its unlike any other i've ever had. right now, i have whiplash, a concussion, a broken ankle and a cracked femur, and its the pain in my side that keeping me agonized. every time i laugh or cough or sneeze, roll over in bed, or attempt going to the bathroom, it agonizes me even more. it honestly has me worried about something serious. im in bed recovering from a car accident and its this is what my minds on. i need help in determining what i should do about this, it is extremely annoying, and from what ive seen of others battles with this supreme annoyance, it is persistant and chronic, lasting over a period of time. help me out, im mangled......

I've been having the same shooting pain issues.
I sit a bit of the day but not constantly.
I have no major commute (10 minutes) and haven't experienced significant weight loss, nor am I over weight (much).
I get these in rounds. A few a day and then nothing for a few days, then a few a day.
Like a hot needle in my left hip area. Rubbing doesn't seem to reach the spot but its not a result of activity.
Actually, it usually effects me when I am relaxing or laying down.
Actually woke me up the other day.
Any thoughts on this oddity???

Hey everybody as far as the pain goes with the hip and groin, it's more te likely your disc or a hernia. If it's always there or has not gone away over a period of years then your probably in my boat. I tore a muscle years ago healed wrong now it keeps re-injuring when I do the simple things like walk. I'm only 26 and I'm in good shape, so it can happen to anyone. I'm possibly going to get surgery if my doc thinks it is the right thing to do and I'm going to rehab the hell out of it. I live in Canada so this is all free if your not from Canada ummmmmm I guess go online and study how to rehab that area of the body. Good luck cheers

Hello.
I am known as Melody and I am only 15.
Yet I get these pains as well, but alas I get them 24/7.

We know why and I believe you should get your hips checked out.
When i went it was due to a tear in the ligaments around my hips (I dance 6 nights a week)
You must be very careful though because the ligaments can tear or there is a chance that one of the ligaments have actually been caught in the actual ball-socket (it has been known to happen)

You might need an operation/surgery for the pains if any of the above are what you have.
For I have two friends (19 and 24)

My 19 year old friend will be getting surgery soon due to the tear in her ligaments and gets the pains 24/7.  She struggles to walk a lot and finds herself unable to do as much as she wishes.

My 24 yr old friend though is in such a condition she can barely walk at all.  She has to get massive injections into her hips and everything.

So it is best to get your hips checked out ASAP so if there is anything wrong they can be dealt with easily.

I have had the same type of pain described in many of these posts, i recently hurt my back at work and found that doing the back strengthening exercises helped with the pain in my hip/thigh. My physio called this symptom a referral pain as the pain in my back had gone but the leg pain was a constant. These exercises have helped me and am now pain free, as long as i keep up with these exercises. I hope this is helpful to someone else, i understand that there are a few different conditions that show the same symptoms which is why there are so many misdiagnosis.

I had posted previously, but can't find my post.. but here's the update:

After seeing 3 doctors, a orthopedic specialist took 5 minutes looking at MRI and X-rays and said he totally disagreed with them being considered "Clean".  He had me do some stretching, took my leg and moved the joint himself.  Asked me again about where the pain was, how frequent, how I managed it.

He diagnosed me with FAI Femoroacetabular Inpingment (Hip Inpingment).  Mine is a growth of the shaft before the ball of the femor, causing the cartilage in my hip joint to be worn down.   I was told to find a less strenuous job (i was a line cook) and keep off it best i can.   I am to come in for Cortisol shots when the pain worsens.   If I cannot manage the pain, at 29.. I am looking at hip replacement surgery.   There are other options, but probaby less effective, so he tells me.   And considering the joints don't last long, it's worst case at 29 I'd have to get one every 5-10 years.

I hope this diagnoses helps some of you, it's a fairly new diagnosis but is easily seen by most.  A MRI ultragram is required for 100% diagnosis.

Goodluck, and Godspeed.

I had similar pains in my hip joints when I was young (teens and early twenties). The pain would sometimes get so bad that I would feel like my hip was going to fail. I read somewhere about food allergies that cause arthritic like symptoms, especially foods from night shade plants (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, green pepper and tobacco). (This struck a chord with my because I noticed that I seemed to get more pain after I had eaten some foods, or some beers or wine.) I had stopped eating the night shade foods and talked to my office coworkers about this and the arthritic like symptoms (I had gone to my doctor about the pains and was told that I did not have arthritis). One coworker gave me an arthritic cookbook for Christmas. The book, which I have since given away, was written by a doctor whose father was a Chinese herbalist. The doctor had been eating a regular North American diet. He also had other symptoms than joint pains including rashes. Basically the cook book advised starting out with a basic diet of non-allergenic foods, staying on that for a while and then re-introducing foods one at a time. Although skeptical, I tried this. I started with rice, chicken, vegetables except green peppers and potatoes, no fruit, no milk and I think no food additives, and no alcohol except one thing which might have been white wine. I kept to this diet for a month, possibly two. I realized that I had not had any joint pains for a while. I gradually introduced most foods back into my diet. There are still some foods that I avoid in quantity - such as those lovely home grown tomatoes at the end of the summer. I do not eat eggplant if I can avoid it. There are some beers that I know to avoid. It is now years later and I have had a hip replacement due to arthritis, they think possibly caused by an early childhood injury. Possibly these foods irritated this condition in its early stage, I don't know. But it might be something to try, or even to keep track of the pain and your food intake.

Hopefully this will help http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=A00409 ... I have the same problem and though it isn't all the time, it does happen every couple months for a couple days and the pain is exhausting. Leaves me almost in tears. I too, decided to see if I could find answers and found this information. Sounds like perhaps this could be the reason. I hope this helps with the rest of you. And from the looks of it, maybe some ibuprofen might be able to subside the pain.

Thanks :)

Hello, I'm 23 and I have been experiencing this too. It comes and goes, but the past month it has gotten worse. I've had these pains on and off for the past couple of years. Just wondering what I can do to get help.  It's starting to affect me when I walk. Here's how I describe it:

Sharp pains, normally later at night but also during the day. Feels like it's my hip joint and sends sharp pains along my lower back, and leaves the surrounding area sore. Please let me know if anyone finds out anything. Thank you!
