Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking?
It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking!
Thanks,
Richard.

I quit smoking a year and half ago, and can't breath. I never had this problem when I smoked. Just taking a shower and putting clothes on seems to be a problem.
Cigarettes contain chemicals that are broncial-dialaters who’s means they actually OPEN your bronchials (making it easier to breathe) when you inhale. One of the reasons for this is to keep you coming back. Have you ever woke up in the morning and cough a little and have congestion but after your first smoke you can breathe better? That’s the dilation. This phenomenon makes it hard to quit as well because people feel like they ant breathe as well when they stop smoking. Additionally, when you lungs are “wide open” from the chemical dilation, it’s hard to measure just how sick your lungs are. Once you quit smoking and your brochials return to normal dilation levels you’ll feel how full of junk your airways really are. Cigarette companies make sure to add these chemicals because it makes it so hard to quit, because people feel like they can’t breathe. Get an inhaler for a few weeks it’ll help get you over the hump and your lungs WILL return to normal.
Thanks for the great info. It's been 10 months since I quit and still get breathless with a flight of stairs etc. it gets really depressing sometimes. I thought by now I would be feeling great. I will not give up or give in however. I WILL find that light at the end of the tunnel
Hii I had those symptoms ,these will continue for at least 2 to 3 months
My Dr told me it was a simply a form of heart failure that many smokers have with out knowing. 1 to 2 mouths the heart gets stronger and breathing becomes easy. And that happened with me. The fluid left my lungs and i feel great. Get checked for heart failure.
Exactly the same .....if is supposed to go away.
I had the same thing too
Yes, horrible sob and did not use Chantix
definitely the pain is from the cough. I had it at left and right sides and on the back too and I was so oppressed of that, some
painkillers helped to reduce the pain and to migrate but coughing hard is the only reason, so doctor prescribed me Codinex to suppress the cough. Chewing coca leaves, or smoking hash will do as well.
I am day 2 without smoking and have to hyperventilate sometimes. It just feels like my lungs are not absorbing air. Like there is a film on them. Or they want smoke so bad they are feeling like there is no air because your lungs actually want smoke.
Was curious, has your shortness of breath gone away?
No you have sleep apnea
