Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking? It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking! Thanks, Richard.

Good info but focus your energy on getting healthy.
I quit cold five weeks ago with no aid, and SOB just started. Freaked me out completely and webmd didn't make me feel better, so I googled SOB in conjunction with smoking cessation. Frankly I'm quite relieved I'm not alone here. Thought I was dying lol
Welcome to this forum.  This forum is probably one of the only things that makes me maintain my sanity through it all...most people look at me like I have 3 heads when I tell them I developed SOB 3 weeks after I quit and that I have never felt unhealthy when I smoked but do now....It's horrible...but you will find some solice from others to help you through.
Today marks my 10th month. Had the best weekend felt great better that when I smoked. Monday SOB? Makes no sense. Today no SOB but feeling off can't describe it jittery and stuff. ~Keith
I know what you mean...I have days when i have this jittery/weird feeling in the pit of my stomach....  Now, today I am also feeling better than yesterday.  Yesterday...I literally felt like I was carrying around another person on my shoulder and it took such energey to walk...almost like my legs wouldn't lift to step....it's the strangest thing....tomorrow i go for my echocardiagram and 6 minute walking test....  Can't wait to see what these results.
Maybe it's the stress of starting another work week? Monday's are always rough and w/o that smoke to get through the start of it is missing? Good luck tomorrow keep us posted. ~Keith
Hi Keith... See, that's the thing...I don't miss smoking, at least I don't think I do...I developed SOB 3 weeks after and have been so focused on that, that I believe it made me forget about it...like a second thought...I do find myself, at times, think I still smoke and will say to myself, ok, I will sit down and have a cigarette before I do this...and then realize...wait...I am longer smoking....that's weird...right.... But thanks...I will keep everyone posted!
Well today marks the 300th day of my suffering, So few days of an almost normal life, and many days of total terror, but this is the road of quiting for a few smokers. It gets better each month, but its really hard to tell at the time.I have saved 4500 dollars and not smoked 12000 thousand cigs, and to all of you people who are over weight, please only eat halve as much, and your S O B will go away. I promise you that, THANKS RALPH
so are you over weight?
Angel I had a similar experince with my legs feeling like they weighed a ton, could barely walk. it lasted over a month. it was so hard to lift my legs. now they are back to normal. god i"m so glad of that. took 2 or 3 times the energy to walk. THANKS RALPH
No I"m not over weight iI am 5'6" tall and I weight 122 lbs 69 years old male lost 14 lbs since i quit smoking.wish I could gain abot 30 lbs, RALPH
the loosing of the weight is from the stress. Once the stress is gone the weight should come back.
Wow Ralph...I am glad to hear that you experienced the same thing but are doing better now....Thank goodness for this forum and for people like you. I truly appreciate your posts.
Ok...so, here it goes...my results from the echocardiogram came back that my heart is perfectly fine...so, lungs, kidneys and heart all fine... I had to perform a 6 minute walk and failed miserably....I had my "game face" on...trying to pass it with flying colors and as soon as I started walking....one of the staff starting walking with me and asking me questions and once I started speaking I completely ran out of breath.... ughhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! Anyway, they have me on oxygen...my level apparently dropped so low that they all ran to me thinking I was going to pass out because the machine dropped so low. This is what I face almost everyday... I didn't know why they were making such a fuss... When they told me I needed the oxygen I have to be honest...I was upset....I am 47...never experienced a day of unhealthiness until i stopped smoking and here I am on oxygen AFTER I stopped. Another staff spoke to my husband who was pissed because he wanted answers and he said that he was where my husband is 5 years ago. His wife stopped smoking, developed SOB and it was almost 2 years later that she began feeling back to normal....at 5 years she is back to feeling great all the time so give it time. If that guy didn't say that to us...I honestly think I would have lost all hope. Now, I am just going to wait.
Hey they put me on oxygen 7 months ago, they gave me a machine and 5 emergency bottles in case the power goes off, sometimes I use it but most of the time now i never do, but its all free to me so I might as well keep it just in caSE, YOU NEVER KNOW With this junk, good luck. I wish you the best, THANKS RALPH
