Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking? It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking! Thanks, Richard.

I know how you feel. One day I will be fine think that it's all over and bam SOB. It sucks because all my tests are fine so I have no clue what is causing this.
Well here it is the 12th of August 2014 20 months into this quit, and no end in sight. but I have to admit that i"m a lot better than I was a few months ago, I know it has to go away soon , nothing lasts forever, I hope the rest of you people are feeling better. I see that there is a lot less talk going on ,so i expect most of you are cured and have moved , and if so I wish you the best, have a great day everone, NMSC.
I am almost at 14 months now and still have days with SOB, but I think it's more from anxiety now. I had a slew of test the last few weeks as I do annually and everything came back normal. I also had an echo cardiogram and stress test which looked good as well. The cardio doc told me that I should see a pulmonologist for the SOB in case I developed asthma which happens to former smokers. I have to say that I do feel a lot better now than I did months ago so I am heading in the right direction. ~Keith
Hi Keith! Sorry it's been a while...I was in Germany for a while...I can honestly say my breathing has improved tremendously...however, I was recently retested by my pulmonary doctor and I am still breathing at only 60% capacity...crazy...he still says it's a mere coincidence that it occurred once I quit...glad to read you are moving in the right direction!
Hope it was a good trip. So then what is the doctor doing for it? Are they placing you on meds or inhalers? Glad to see you have improved and your family must be relieved? Keep pushing along we are blessed that God has given us the strength to not give in and stick with what we started out to do. Keith
And on a dark day at the end of summer your fate shall be spoken, and you will not be afraid for you have always known the time has come anew. It will put a tear in your eyes and a sparkle in your heart NMSCENTER
so the SOB has improved? I'm 42 days after quitting and have SOB, wondered whether or not this is going to go away.
As much as I didn't want to, I am going to the YMCA 3 times per wk and do aerobic machines for 20 mins to force myself to deep breathe. The SOB isn't gone yet but I think that this is slowly, mechanically expanding my lungs in addition to the inhalers.
Yes it has. I was having SOB everyday for 6 or more months. Now at 14 months it's one or 2 days a week. It usually does not last a whole day either. I can say though that I get winded much sooner now then when I use to smoke which I find odd. Maybe my lungs are in a heal process? I just continue to do breathing exercises and work out as much as I can do with walking and light weight lifting for now. '
Hello everyone....I am back....Shortness of breath has improved for me tremendously but it took 15 months for me to feel a lot better...! So, hang in there...Angel123
