Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking?
It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking!
Thanks,
Richard.

Scott, I have exactly those same symptoms after four months quit. I smoked about 1/2 pack per day for 33 years. Did your tight chest, dry mouth and shortness of breath subside over time?
Thanks, Kevin

Thanks for sharing. I went to doctor and now its 18 days.. I cant believe how horrible this shortness of breath is.. I will never smoke again... This is so terrible.. I'm usually active.. I'm wheezing and gasping .. I sure hope I helped myself live longer.. I will never take another breath for granted...I thank god for every breath I take.. I can imagine If I knoew what I would be going through now ever smoking.!!! I just didn't connect the dots. Its so addictive and at time I would die to have a cigg. Now it feels like death quitting but no. Its not .. We are experiencing our bodies telling us after so long how it feels to be poisoned on a daily basis THIS TOO SHALL PASS.
I agree when i first quit I was at emergency room at least 4 times in a 5 month span, I needed to know I was ok and not having heart attack etc. Even now 1yr 3 months later OH I FORGOT AND 20LBS HEAVIER LOL I still get short of breath every now and then but not like before. It all gets better but i was a mess! 48yrold male smoked 30yrs.

I was a smoker for 32 years. I stopped on the 7th of May. I also have a problem with a tight chest, especially when I am sleeping
Has it improved any at all ?
I even told my wife while i was in the hospital that i did not think i was going to make it, a very sobering feeling. One that literally scared the cravings right out of me.It took about 8 months for me to get to the point to where i could really control my anxiety. If i got distracted from it, i would realize it was gone...
Wow,
100 Pages. I came in around 30 or so almost 3 years ago. Man how time flies
Hi.. I am Brittney a 30 yr old woman who smoked a pack a day for 15 years, and turning 30 I decide to quit so it's been 4 months I've stopped and have been going through same thing you experienced. Climbing a flight of 10 stairs I have never been so out of breath I mean I am gasping for air....So I'm wondering has it gotten better now that it's been awhile?
It gets better yes. Hang in there.
try natural remedy, fresh ginger juice and honey in hot boiling water 2 to 3 times a day will remove all your mucus within a week. It really works better than anything you can imagine.
THANK YOU. it's just not me. Ok, so I am not alone with this. When I was smoking, I barely went to the doctor for anything, I paid health insurance and I went for the general lady test to be done each year. But since I stop smoking, I am always calling the Dr. for this and that it is so annoying. I do not feel healthier, and I was just having that discussion with someone no more that an hour ago.I find the shortness of breath is less frequent. I miss the routine of my smoking, I see a commercial or a part of a movie and the person is having one and I see myself. But, my kids come first. thanks
