Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking?
It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking!
Thanks,
Richard.

I just quit smoking 4 days ago and by the second day I was having problems breathing, like I couldn't get enough air in my lungs. Thank you for the explanation. I will try deep breathing exercises and see if that helps.

I quit 4 years ago and still have shortness of breath.
Thought I'd share what I have been going through. I'm 30 and have been smoking on and off for about 12 years. I tried to quit a few times along the way but never managed to stay away from cigs completely. Maybe that's why I never had any symptoms before. 2 months ago I decided to make some lifestyle changes. Quit cold turkey and started going to the gym 4 times a week. Felt great at first. But 2-3 weeks Into it I had my first panic attack. I thought I was dying. I kept telling my wife that I needed an ambulance. then came the struggle of sob and dizziness. After couple of months the sob is slowly getting better. I still have bad days but it's more manageable than it was at first. But the anxiety is still driving me crazy. I'm constantly feeling like I'm gonna faint in front of a big crowd. It's crazy because the only thing that would make me feel better is a heavy workout at the gym. I see the pain that everyone have had to go through to beat the addiction. It makes me feel better about what I'm going through. Keep up the good fight! - Jace

Hey guys and here is my INFO ) on Korean website it's really hard to find any info that relates Stopping smoking and shortness of breath.(and that's why i'm finally here haha) It's like non of the korean quitted smokres have this symptom. if it's because of mucus, WE EAT TONS OF HOT SPICY FOOD. maybe that's one of the reasons. because i can't bear the "Regular Korean Spicy Food". every time i touch them my face turns to red waterfall, and most of korean enjoy it maybe that'a the way. Anyway i'm so glad to see that i'm not the only one. you guys, my friends, made me lot more comfortable. hope all of us make it. Thank you.
I did quit for a year and around the 7th month is when I really started noticing the difference the shortness of breath disappered and I could actually exert myself at the gym without my chest hurting without running out of breath..hope this helps you out.
The pain under your rib could be anxiety.
That's for your onesty I find this has helped me give up 3 weeks now have shortness of breath some times lasts for 2-3 days at a time can't wait for this to go away many thanks
Yes I smoked for 15yrs menthols and when I quit I started experiencing shortness of breath and having anxiety attacks because of the shortness of breath. It took a few weeks to clear up and still I would have episodes out of the blue. But IT WILL CLEAR UP! be patient and don't start back smoking. I started back smoking after 5yrs quit and only smoked for 2months and I quit again and sure enough the extreme shortness of breath came back! So I've quit for 1week now and still experiencing the shortness of breath more now than when I was smoking but I know it will get better in time.
