Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking?
It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking!
Thanks,
Richard.

Its been 5 months, still have SOB during 5pm below, anxiety rare as of now (but i had last night, made me scared again of dieing). I am really praying always that this will end and ill feel normal again.. Also, that this is due to smoking and its not too late to do whats right....

I had every test known to man, because I demanded it....everything was fine...It took 15 months for me to feel better...in 4 days, it will be 2 years since I have quit and I feel fantastic...but earlier on...I could not have said that!
By the way...it's Angel everyone! Keith and Ralph...how are you guys doing?
I hope Ralph is OK? I'm doing fine. I feel as good as I did when I first quit. Sorry folks but when I first quit 22 months ago I felt fine. I stopped because it was the the right time and 27 years was enough. I'm just glad I'm back to normal because my first 12 months were hell. Angel good to hear u r fine. I hope Ralph checks in. Keith
I quit February 13th after smoking for 45 years. I am experiencing the same shortness of breath deal. I'm on Zyban and the gum.
I was so relieved to read all these posts. I am 66 and I stopped smoking five months ago, after smoking at least 40 a day for about 40 years. And I felt fine and was never ill! Now I am increasingly short of breath every day. I can't even do my daily walk with my dogs without stopping every now and again to catch my breath. My GP said I would be susceptible to lung ailments for six months to a year, but she didn't mention SOB by name. Now I know I'm not the only one and that I probably do not have lung cancer, after all.
I just passed one year and FINALLY some signs of getting my breath back....I was even able to stop advair and allbuteral .....thx for the support, I saved thousands of dollars for unneeded tests
i am going through the same thing. I am still short of breath after 3 weeks of quitting cigs. My doc said the same thing. I have been very weak also.
Just wanted to contribute. I smoked from age 16 - 36. I have been quit for a year this month. 1 week after quitting i was in hospital attached to a heart monitor thinking i was dying, i could not catch my breath. I developed a heart arrhythmia - an extra beat so every few beats it felt like my heart stopped. Chest xray and blood tests clear. This was through anxiety and panic of not breathing. I still have these extra beats but i try not to let them scare me. I have regular episodes of breathlessness, waking in the night,,throughout the day i have to take deep breaths and i get accused of 'what are you sighing at' all the time. Still coughing, mostly dry cough. Its awful. Feeling ill every day has made me depressed and tearful. I dont think i will ever feel better again, I was jogging and mountain biking 3 years ago..! i feel like ive aged 20 years since i stopped and put loads of weight on.
I was a smoker for 50 years, not heavy, gave up a month ago. Was always physically fit but am now experiencing shortness of breathe feeling generally unwell and am coughing up all the black tar from my lungs. Hope I feel better soon.
I am in the same boat as you exactly, except I'm going on 2 years and still have SOB and anxiety which I never had before quitting. I gave up smoking in the hopes to get healthy and honestly I feel no better if not worse than before. At this point I know I won't go back but I still dream of having that cig.
45 years, 1-1/2packs/day. Quit 3 weeks ago and it is excruciating. Feel awful, can't concentrate. Been to the emergency room, still can't breathe. Anxiety is overwhelming. I honestly don't know if I'm getting better or dying. If I knew this is to be expected I will be okay, but not convinced yet.
This quit will test you like you have never been before. I was in the same situation going to the ER 3x thinking I was having a heart attack and the SOB was killing me. It took a good year before I started to feel more normal. Now, at 2 years I feel as good as I did before I quit. I did not stop because of health reasons. I just thought it was time after 30 years. Cold turkey was tough. I tried anxiety meds for 3 weeks and did not like the feeling so I stopped and i just rode it out. Many countless nights up in bed freaking out with heart palps and SOB. I read many forums and found many people going through the same so I knew I was not nuts and just needed to ride this out however long that may be. I look at smokers now and feel sad for them. The panic of when will they get that next smoke in? going on vacation wondering where will I be able to smoke? Now it's great no panic getting on a long plane ride or in the car having to stop. Feels great! Also, I never realized how much I smelled of smoke until I quit and when someone walks by me that just had a cig and smells. I say wow that was me? Hang in there it's worth it even if you feel that it's not right now. In the long run it pays off. Keith
