Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking? It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking! Thanks, Richard.

Yeah i noticed today it was almost gone. noticed it a few times but not that much. But yeah ill try the deep breathing
Yes, the problems that you have seem to be had by you and others indiscriminately. I really can't make a connection to your past and mine or your brother's as to why you got hit so hard but we didn't. I have to say though that I've never had the morning cough/clear-out in order to get going except when I had a cold or something, but that's common even to non-smokers. So this is why I see my case as very similar to yours - minus the e-cig. I wish others would chime in so I could make additional comparisons.
im experiencing it right now, its been a month that i quit smoking.... i ran stress test and 2-d-ecocardiogram all these heart tests were normal. damn, it so uncomfortable
Are you using the e-cig to help with the quit?
no, i dont use e-cig, i just lessen it first and finally quit
im not using e-cig... how long will this SOB until we breath normal again, im an active basketball player, i get SOB after i play and during at rest, especially when i fall asleep, its like i stopped breathing and it wakes me up. what should i do? tnx
Alot of us are in that boat. I'm not a sports person, but I have 65 acres that keeps me busy all the time and keeps me active. I've only been quit for 4 months after 27 years smoking a pack a day. I got hit the worst with SOB during the third week up until about the 3rd month. I'm not all better, but at least I don't notice the SOB as much. I hope I'm not just getting used to it. Others on here have had a horrible experience after quitting, some have use the e-cig. I did not, and I'm not having too bad a time quitting - hard to believe. Just hang in there and absolutely do not even take one more drag because the cig has bronchodilators in it that expand your bronchial tubes in your lungs to make breathing easier to mask how bad your lungs are getting as you continue to smoke so that you will keep smoking. Please report back how ling it takes before the major SOB goes away. Mine started between the second and third week of quitting and the beginning of the 3rd month.
Hope he is doing ok? I have not heard from him in awhile. I think as you feel better, you tend to fall off of checking this forum which if you have read it from the beginning, will see users dropping off after a year. I am on my 20th month but still like to check in a few times a week just to see if anyone has a question. I would not have pulled through this if it was not for this site and the people helping you out. Keith
was wondering how you were too Keith. I read this post about 3 or 4 times. is your sob gone yet. any yeah I notice once it goes away it seems like people stop comming back.
Just woke up i had a lil good sleep, i sprayed anti asthma inhaler i just tried it, it helps to loosen in someways, im 40 now i didnt have asthma. This SOB triggers when im about to fall asleep and when im at rest.
Yeah i get the same thing. I seem to notice it more when relaxing, I was out all day and barely noticed it. Now I'm sitting on my couch and it's back.
I'm doing ok. The only time I get SOB is when my anxiety kicks in. Mind you I never had anxiety as a smoker and when I quit it kicked in. I have read this happens. It feels good not worrying where or when will I be able to get a smoke in. I wish you luck, I know what you are going through and it's tough. Keith
38 year old smoker, smoked for 17years , first 5 years smoked like 2 to 6 last 8 years around 14 cigs. So I have around 9 pack years. Quit cold turkey 4 months back, hit by sob 2nd day like a truck. Used bronchodilators 1st 3 month. Mom and dad are doctors so I have some med knowledge and get advice. Started with nebulizer then milder bronchodilators, settled with terbutaline oral one spoon a day. Terbutaline has side effects increased heart rate and hand tremors in the beginning so ask your doctor, age could be a factor if you doctor can prescribe it to you or not. I have discontinued it since last 1 month. I am taking Xanax as needed basis before going to bed which helps me with anxiety and sleep. After 3 month I get breathing problem like once in a while. Xanax do help, did some research online. It relaxes muscles so I think breathing becomes easier. I would say in my case I started smoking at 21, thats with full grown lungs and have quit in my 30ies at 37. I have suffered and I am still suffering now and then with breathing problems but not a great deal like I have read in this forum. But still I had my last straw ( that broke the camels back) , not going back to smoking camel lights (pun intended). Last time I quit was exactly 1 year back for a month and I didn't get sob. I gotta say smoking is injurious and is progressively injurious after 35 even you start smoking in your 20s. I still have some insomnia , acid reflex and slow digestion.
Same for me and after 12 months it all started to disappear. Now at 20 months I have none of the bad symptoms like I had when I first quit. You just need to fight through all of the feeling and it will get better. I know most of it is related to anxiety which is why the Xanax helps you when taking it. I stayed away from all of that stuff because I did not want something else on my back to withdraw from. Keith
I just went to the doctor for this today and he prescribed me ativan 1mg tabs for the anxiety.
