Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking?
It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking!
Thanks,
Richard.

Yes, Too seem to have bit of difficulty breathing now that I quit. If it last more than a couple weeks I'm heading to the dr. Started about 30 days after my quit. Now been 40.

Good to see some of the elders are still here....lol. Coming up on 2 years now ,,,,,,20lbs heavier but feeling better. I still get an occasional anxiety but can deal with it much, much better. Now my biggest hurdle is losing this spare tire i have, but in the grand scheme of things, this is a small ordeal. I have not been here in quite a while and for some damn reason i dont get post notifications. Been working and traveling a lot this year, but have not forgotten. Some here have helped me, and others through some pretty dark times.Really glad to see this thread is stil alive, well and still helping others.

I read this almost daily now, hoping it proves to be true for me. Really struggling with this, some of the worst moments of my life.
I've been a smoker for 8 years and i have shortness of brath for almost 3 years from nou, som times i hacking up tar but the thing is, that my lungs repair themselfs slow.
It was for me too.
I actually looked my wife in the face once in an ER and told her that I did not think I was going to make it. I TRULY believed that, but here I am. I smoked for 26 years and I can see and feel the benefits now.
Hang in there.
This is what I need to hear. Somehow I have to believe this gets better or it simply is not worth it. How long before you saw some improvement? It's been over a month of misery (and anxiety) and at times I can't cope.
10 months and me to short of breath and no hacking
10 months quit but like you anxiety is biggest issue. 40 years pack a day smoker and still no end in sight. lost some great friends because of smoking and have lovely wife, kids and grandchildren to take care of.All things will pass so hang in there more people have quit smoking compared to those who still smoke. It's the hardest thing I have ever done but hang tough All the best
Thanks much for responding. I spent the day in bed trying to deal with this, even knowing it's mostly in my head I can't control it. Anxiety is the monster. Somehow I will win this battle -
Elaine2009, Please do not give in. I hope by now your have been smoke free for 12 mths. If you have read other posts you will see that it was just your body going through withdrawal. I sincerely hope you have got off the ciggies and saved enough money for a lovely holiday. That is what I plan to do.
It wouldn't hurt for you to see your doctor if only for a check-up and maybe a once over, but what you are going through is quite normal if you read other messages. Hopefully you have stayed away from the cancer sticks/cigarettes. Cheering you on.
Elaine,
I have been smoking for over 55 yrs. Coughing up lots of mucous, so decided to just not inhale. I'll tell you want, I have never felt this bad in my entire life. VERY short of breath, no energy, etc... At 72, if I stopped smoking totally I would be six feet under! Mucous almost cleared, so I guess I will continue smoking , not inhaling, for now and stop all together in the near future, If I live through it... Crap, this is awful!!
Indeed it is. Your body and instincts tell you one thing and logic tells another.Time helps but getting that under control is a big part. There were times i swore i was on the verge of a heart attack. So i went out and spent $60.00-70.00 in a decent blood pressure cuff, not the wrist type but a real one. It lived by me for quite some time. Every time i had an episode, on it went. AFTER A FEW THOUSAND tests.(LOL) of my BP coming back at 116/76 ish my mind started falling inline. Sometimes you DO have to prove it to yourself.......
It's great to see that you are still here. I am on my 25th month. Some anxiety still but it's nothing that I can't handle. Funny I use to hope to get an attack just to prove I can beat it and it works. now when i feel it coming on it's so far in the back of my mind that it does not last more than a minute or so. Keep us up to date with your progression. I see people posting who just started their quit and remember what a roller coaster ride it was for the first year or so. Hang in there folks.
