Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking? It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking! Thanks, Richard.

Same for me. It was all mental. I knew this once I went to my doctor and had every test done. All of them came back normal. I'm too at about 3 years and feel great. Stick with it and you will get past this feeling. Keith
Did you ever cough up the qunk, and if so how long did it take?
That sounds like a seperate problem called apnea ... the body literally just ... forgets to breathe. Its fairly common, I have that too, it runs in my family.
Smoked for 29 years, roughly a pack a day... Cold Turkey 51 days ago, been in the hospital 3 times not understanding WTF was going on, chest pains, shakes, sweating, chills etc... I also Have a Hypo Thyroid and take meds every day, I found out that its not smart to quit like this when taking meds and having this condition...I also had x-rays done of my chest that came back clear...I talked to another guy who quit 5 months ago still going through alot of the same issues that I am right now, but he said it does get a little better in time, don't give in!
I have that too, I thought it was sleep apnea! What is strange to me is, I had shortness of breath while smoking, when I quit I could breath a little better and had more energy in the first 3 weeks, but the 4th week, I have been short of breath all day and not much energy! It's only been a month
Same here! I've been smoke free for two years and this is awful! Come to find out I'm not alone and neither are you. I went to the doctor and now they believe I have Coronary Artery Disease from smoking. I'm 43! Should have never started. Good luck!
im 24 yo, i've been smoking for 10years everyday.(yep, i was 14 when i started, never have a day break after that) and on my third week of being a smoke free. and yes, on my third week, im having this uncomfotable feeling (cough, heavy breathing, sore throat). what's confusing is, i alter smoking to VAPING, to first, control myself for craving. second, being unable to reject nicotine without alternation. third, im really having a hard time trying to quit but, addiction always beats me. i am trying to quit for 2 years, but everytime i lessen it.. it goes back with more kickbacks. then i decided to switch it first to vaping before quiting, and i think it was a succes.. .- so i am not sure what causes this lung irritation. but due to my researches this feeling is normaly caused by nicotine withdrawal,
I was exactly like you. Smoked for about 30 years. I quit about 3 years ago and now feel fine. It took a good year to feel somewhat normal again so hang in there.
Also stop going to the er. I did 3x in the first 3 months and each time was a waste. Go to the doctor get a full physical blood work and see from there. Once all test my test came back fine I knew it was all mental.
yes im going on 40 days with exactly the same issues.im 54 have smoked since I was sixteen.
Yes steve, I have stoped for 11 days and so short of breath it is worrying. Constant cough, head ache, no energy.
Sleep Apnea is what I think it is
Same here SOB, chest pains, constant throat clearing, sinus congestion, the list goes on. 67 days cold turkey quit after 38 years smoking 2-3 packs a day.. Funny thing was the first month smoke free actually felt great. Yearly physical showed very high cholesterol and hypothyroidism. Smoking all those years did some damage that will take some time to clear up. Strongly believe added chemicals in cigarette tobacco mask some of the health issues until quitting. Plan on staying the course and hoping to feel better in a few months.
Hey there hope your ok I'm 161 days after cold turkey quit smoked over 30 years too I'm still getting the sob it's not as bad but it's still there, I been diagnosed with gallstones, and Gerd since quit and I agree smoking masks a lot ! Here if you need any moral support or just a chat, keep positive, Kerry.
I can't remember the last time I read something online that was so helpful. Thank you for that post. I just had brain surgery and quit smoking at the same time. I have a doctors appointment this week and will mention the shortness of breath but after reading your post and smoking for 30yrs; I feel a sense of relief.
