When i was younger, my asthma was so bad i ended up in a hospital. then my docter prescribed Singulair 4mg. before i was always carrying around a Nebulizer. a huge bulky machine that i put liquid in and it turned it to gas that i breathed in. shortly after taking the pill, the need for the Nebulizer decreased. but a few years later my asthma got worse and the doseage was uped to 5mg. So i asked my docter about an inhaler. when i first bought it i thought i wouldnt need the pills. but that qiuckly changed. i am 13 years old (male) and i am currently taking singulair everyday and i carry my inhaler with me at all times. my father also has asthma. once he saw how amazing it was, he began taking it. from the time i started it to now i have expirienced any side effects or atleast noticed them, i heard that it could cause some weight gain, but i have been taking it for eight years and i am still under wieght and the lightest among my peers but suprisingly tall. I have never tried to withdraw so i have no imput on that. but bottem line is that it is a maricle pill that gave me the independance to live my life (with a rescue inhaler) and be active without the fear of always having to carry a Nebulizer. Thank you singulair, you gave me my life back.

I have been on Singulair for years, struggling with losing weight.  I can't seem to lose weight, have been on south beach phase 2 diet for a long time, maybe a year or more, can't seem to drop any weight, in fact I continue to gain weight.  I think I am going to go off of it.  I was considering weight loss surgery but now I think I am going to go off the singulair and see how that helps.  I am going to call the FDA and report it because I can't figure out why I cannot seem to lose weight and I barely eat.  I was crying this morning because of my weight and I feel so down.  Singulair is the only thing that has really worked at this point but I have to see if weaning off it might help and just using my regular inhaler.  The problem is I get so bad from my horrific allergies and asthma that much of the time I cannot breathe well and end up at my allergist office with labored breathing which they try to help with.  Is there any other drug like singulair that might work?  I also have exercise induced asthma.

The doctors are full of you know what. I have gained tons of weight and while dieting cannot even get it off. I am discontinuing the singulair unless I need it.

I have severe allergies. I have also been on Zyrtec and Singulair for years. I have weighed 120-125 most of high school and then lost weight in college dropping down to 114. After taking them for the last 2-3 years or so, I now weigh 175. I feel disgusting. My doctor had checked and double checked my thyroid to make sure nothing was wrong, I even had an ultrasound done on it because they couldn't figure out why I was gaining the weight so rapidly. I weighed 150 lbs a year ago. 25 lbs in a year is ridiculous. Tonight was the first night I was googling rapid weight gain along with the medications I was taking. It will be such a relief to get off it and get back to my normal weight if it truely is the culprit. I can deal with being on a different allergy medication, I cannot deal with being this heavy.

I started taking Singulair for severe allergies and asthma about 8 months ago, and it was about 2 months before my best friend's wedding. Because of that, I was starting to watch my portions and what I was eating (already a vegetarian who ate pretty well), and my usual 119 lbs started steadily climbing, despite my eating less and healthier foods consistently. I've always been the type of person who can easily lose weight if I cut out the night-time ice cream and eat a little less, and I was trying much harder than usual and the weight wasn't coming off, but instead continuing to rise! I thought about my habits/routine & realized the only change was that I'd started taking Singulair. I stopped taking it, and immediately lost the extra lbs, and was able to fit into my bridesmaid dress (thank god). When I mentioned that I'd gained weight on Singulair to my new Dr (when she suggested it) she said that she's never heard of anyone having gained weight on Singulair, and that it's not a side effect. It's frustrating when Drs dismiss side effects that are very real! I'm very conscious of what I eat, and while I sometimes put on a few lbs, I ALWAYS know why, lol. I have no trouble admitting when I've been eating too much cheese & ice cream, and as soon as I cut back, I lose the weight. It is NOT in your imagination.

So I did a test.

I quit the singulair after having a very hard time losing weight.  I was  eating almost 80 percent vegetarian/south beach friendly for over a year and losing no weight while being on a weight loss program.

When I quit the singulair 6 days ago I was about 296lbs (yes for real and I barely ever eat). Now I suddenly weight 282 5 days later.  This is a tremendous weight loss suddenly  It is like the singulair supresses your metabolism and then suddenly when I went off in 5 days I lost about 14 or more pounds.  That is proof and I just can't afford to stay on the singulair any more as it causes my weight to climb and climb.  Now I am on blood pressure medicine so maybe if I stay off the singulair and just take zyrtec and albuterol as needed I hope I can handle my severe allergies.

I will report back in another week and we will see what happens with my weight.  Now keep in mind I did not diet at all during the 6 days and in fact I ate an entire subway sandwhich one night which I was sure would make me gain weight.  I drank coke, ate fries with my chicken strips, etc and still lost weight. We also ate out one night and I had chicken parmesan which I was also sure would make me gain weight from all the cheese.  I was also on my period during the 5 days which should have made me gain weight.  The period ended yesterday so loss of 12 + pounds while on my period that is crazy.

Singulair I love you for your asthma helping effects but I have to let you go because you make me unhealthy and overweight....................

Back in May, I wrote about my 8 year old son being on Singulair for 3 consecutive years and gaining temendous weight (25 pounds). Like many, I was shocked and saddened to see so many people experiencing the same issue. I immediately took him off Singulair and like some, my pediatrician denied Singulair causing the weight gain.  It's been 4 months and although my son hasn't lost more than 3 pounds, (he is big boned to begin with) he lost all of the bloat! He always looked very bloated and his stomach was too big for his body. That has all evened out since being off the Singulair and I anticipate more weight loss since he is back into more physical activity through sports. I wish all of you a successful journey back to your comfortable place.

I am so glad I visited this sight. What a terrible predicament. I have worked very hard to lose nearly 35 pounds and since being diagnosed and treated for asthma, I see the weight creeping back up although I have not changed my eating habits. I am stopping the Singulair right now  and seeing what happens. Ive only been on it a full week and I already notice changes. Im on Singulair, Zyrtec, and just stopped Advair. No way Im gonna balloon back up. Forget the drugs.

I started taking Singular 10mg 6 months ago,and have gained 15 lbs in the last 4 months. Joined Weight Watchers and walk 2 miles a day and cannot get the weight off! When you check out Singulair's website it says weight gain is not a side effect. They need to change that information!!!

Experiment done.

Weight at start 296.00.

Weight after stopping Singulair for 6 days 280.00 with no working out or exercise.

After another week weight still at 280.00 with no dieting but I am on the edge of 279.00 and am teetering at the moment.

This is eating anything I wanted and no dieting for 6 days including drinking cokes and a full sub at subway.

I have not been able to lose weight at all while taking Singulair, Eating South Beach Diet With A Vegetarian Flair.

Gimme a break.  Now I am staying off the Singulair unless I really need it.  The first few days I had a few asthma attacks but now I am normalizing without the Singulair.

Best wishes.

I feel so relieved after reading everyone's encounter with Singular. I took it for 3 weeks. I felt irritable , anxious, grouchy, sad. Also the weight gain. My allergies have been out of control since the beginning of May , it's now October. This causes me severe asthma. I can only say I'm glad I quit taking it. After a week I started to feel back to myself again although the stuffy nose, asthma, itchy nose and eyes are back. I believe this medication is under investigation by the FDA and it should be. It does help but the side effects are over whelming.
