I have been having this off and on since 2011. I had a sinus CT 2014 along with a septoplasty and turbinate reduction. Last week I discovered that when I wear contacts I do not have the smell, but when I wear my glasses and have a stuffy nose it starts up, usually late and night and is gone by the AM. I notice that my glasses sit heavy on my nose and leave a dent. The smells started about the time I was needing glasses regularly. I have been following it closely now for several days and no smell when the contacts are in. Like the rest of you, I find this to be terrible. The smell is so strong when I breath slow, but nothing when I take a fast breath. I get sinus infection every time I cry. Everything gives me sinus pain and pressure.

I'm smelling it right now as I type this. I asked my girlfriend the other day if she smelled it too and she said no. She said what exactly are you smelling? I said exhaust fumes from like a car. I smell it no matter where I am. This is so bizarre. Been happening to me for about 3 months now. It goes away for a short time then all of a sudden it's back.

Omg! I've been smelling exhaust fumes for many months now. I went to my doctor and she said I had a sinus infection. Took all Med to clear the infection and still smelled fumes. I quit smoking, thought it was that. Still smell exhaust fumes.... I'm stumped! I'll try the vitamin D see if that helps. Willing to try anything. It scares me to to image I have some thing so toxic coming out of my body because this smell is horrific. Need help!

I've had it twice from using spray paint and bug spray. There must be some chemical in the aerosol cans that has caused it. So if you use anything like that with any regularity it may keep it from getting better. I kept using some Simply Saline and did it often. Each time it took a couple of weeks to go away.

Almost a year and a half ago it started with me. No menthol but exhaust day and night. Last February my mom suggested trying zinc supplements. 2xday. They worked well for 9 months, now the smell is back. The only time I get relief is from one of those sachet pillows... It smells like balsam. Now*that's* a nice smell when it can break through.it's distracting, I feel like I'm going crazy. Who can help with this???

Try using the Simply Saline often. I think it is some type of chemical reaction that affects our sinuses. Try to figure out what you use that you inhale so that you can get rid of it.

I'm so glad I found this website! This has been happening to me for two weeks now. I smell it at night while doing homework and laying in the bed. No one else smells it. I have never smoked, I don't drink, and never had any illegal drugs. I am going to try the vitamins. I'm just glad to know I'm not the only one. You can find anything on the internet! Lol!

check out GERD - reflux. I relieve this odour by taking ant-acids, meds to lower acid and watch my diet for irritants (coffee, alcohol, cigarettes, chocolate, curries etc) - it takes a few weeks to settle down after a bad attack. Can come along with headache, nausea and stomach pain.

Can you please give me an update? I've had the same exact symptoms for 3 months now and I'm getting extremely nauseous from it.

Ugh, I too, smell this smell, some times for days at a time....then it goes away. I really, really wish I could easily see the answer.....I turned here, because it's driving me crazy (at times, like now)....I have also noticed some times it's preceded, or accompanied by head noise (loud). I do not have a stuffy head, or apparent sinus infection (chronic sufferer) UGH!! Anyone have any answers, yet?....

Thank you for sharing your posts. This was happening to me when I was in a lot of stress and it was good to find I was not alone. HERE IS WHAT HELPED ME! I went to my CHIROPRACTOR and told him how I suffered for weeks. He adjusted my upper cervical vertebrae (atlas, occiput ) and my jaw. He gently held pressure and tugged on the plates of my skull in a particular area and a certain direction. WOW! Immediate relief. The smell started coming back the next day so I went back to him. He repeated the treatment and I have been EXHAUST SMELL FREE EVER SINCE! ( for months) He is in Central Massachusetts at Hope Wellness and Rehab. If that isn't close to you, Try to find someone in someone in your area. Good luck and may you be scent free soon!

This is very weird. I woke up yesterday morning and straight away sensed this exact exhaust fume problem which persisted all day. I Googled to see if I could find an answer in what was causing it and how it could be treated but there weren't many medical answers, It seems to effect many people though through multiple websites.
The good news for me though is that within 1 day my problem had stopped on its own accord. As I went to sleep at around 11pm, I still had this exhaust smell in my nose and was feeling worried and I had made the decision to see a general practitioner the next day. This is where things got interesting for me:
I awoke at about 12.30am after sleeping from about 11pm, our dog wanted to go outside to do its business, and I was really thrilled to sense that the exhaust smell had gone. I was really surprised, and my first thought was why did it disappear so quickly after one and a half hours of sleep?
For me, I am only guessing, the problem was somewhere in my brain - something may have been triggering the area of my brain that effects smell. I have no idea if was actually a brain problem but I consider myself lucky its gone and I pray it never comes back.

I send best wishes to those who are new to this problem and to those who have suffered with it over time.
