Hi everyone. Well I'm really glad these seem to be a common problem, but no so thrilled that there doesn't seem to be an effective solution as they do smell really bad. I'm a smoker, and thought that that could be related, but it seems just as many non-smokers have the same problem. Sometimes they can dislodge themselves when I'm talking or smoking, but I find that gargling with water/salt water seems to be the best treatment. Thanks for ur help guys.
Yeah I got a big chunk today too... ick. I always thought it was because I have post nasal drip. I tend to get them more in the winter when I have more allergies. I definately think its the food/bacteria/saliva-mucus mixture but i have no idea if they are bad for you. I havent died yet...
I've had these for years too (25 at least). Good to finally know what they are called and that they are harmless. I tried to describe them to my doctor and he said I probably had allergies and should get allergy tests. I knew that wasn't the answer.

I've noticed mine tend to "break lose" when I am a bit dehydrated, or have a dry throat (i.e. after exercise or working hard outside).
Yes ppl, i think everyone gets those and many ppl have them not even knowing.
I have them from time to time and it smells really bad..its like yellowish pebbles and wen they come out it smells like rotten eggs or even worse.

As i read on in this posting i now realized that this isn't anyhealth issue so no worries.
THere doesn't have to be white chunks in your tonsils for them to smell rotten. All I have to do is press my finger on the tonsils, and the saliva that I squeeze out of them or around them smells deadly. Kind of fishy, and dog breathy. It makes me paranoid of having repulsive breath. A co-worker has bad breath that smells exactly like those tonsil stones/secretions, and I am afraid that mine smells the same, even though I clean my tonsils daily. THey smell rotten within minutes again. I wish I had them removed. I wonder if insurance covers it..
I thought that it was related to snot drip too, because I thought I tended to get them when I had a runny nose, but bacteria makes more sense. To me they smell just like plaque (like your floss after you floss your teeth) and I tend to get them in the morning (after anaerobic bacteria has a lot of time to feed). My guess is that it is the waste of the bacteria, just like your plaque, and their waste contains sulfur which causes it to smell bad (basically same as bad breath concoction). I've noticed they tend to be in depressions, but they don't spew out if i press on my tonsils, usually just one at a time. I'll admit I don't have the best oral hygene, so hopefully if I improve they'll go away.

ps: i don't think they make your entire mouth smell bad (unless maybe you've got a huge one) because my boyfriend has never said anything.
I have these things too, but I have had my tonsils out since I was very little. SO, I dont know how it could be those tonsilloh things if I have no tonsils....

I am wondering if it is a nasal/sinus problem in relation to having adult allergies. I never had allergies as a child, but as of late, my dog is really bothering me, so I wonder????

Another fact about me, I sleep with my mouth open, and am and always have been a mouth breather. I have never felt like I could breath through my nose. So, I wonder if that helps dry my throat to form these little things.
I am sooo glad to find that others have the same problem as me! I have had these things in my throat for years. They used to come up out of my throat and into my mouth at the most inconvenient of times! I saw my doctor and he had a quick look in my throat and said "probably just catarrh." I knew that wasn't the answer because of the texture and smell of the lumps. To stop these lumps coming up at bad times, I started pushing them out & spitting them out every night after brushing my teeth - I find that they come from a little opening next to my tonsils, not my actual tonsils (which could explain how you could still have them without having tonsils). It does make the area a bit tender but at least they don't come up when you're not expecting it! When I showed my husband one once he nearly collapsed he was so grossed out! He suggested that it may be trapped food bits and, having read you guys' ideas it sounds likely that it's trapped food & bacteria. So glad to know I'm not alone in having this gross problem!!!
ps. i dont think it relates directly to bad breath - I think that's more due to not eating properly and not brushing your tongue to get the bacteria off it.
I got these toward the end of my pregnancy that ended unfortunately in stillbirth (32 weeks). The doctors are still trying to find out what went wrong. You don't think this could have been a cause...do you?
I had them all through puberty. Once I stopped eating red meat they went away. Now that I have the occassional burger I suddenly get them again. Just a guess. They were gone for 12 years.
WOW U know what? I just realized the same thing happened to me. I had them when I was little and even in HS but once I stopped eating red meat I didn't have them anymore. Since I've had my daughter, I eat red meat sometimes (just for the convenience of getting something in my system, I guess) and now they're back. Just this morning I saw one so wide in my gland opening I just had to put my finger back there. I pushed on the side and sure enough it squirted out almost how a white head would push out of your pore. I was totally grossed out. I asked my mom about it and she said she never had them so maybe it's not from the meat but I don't know...I'm so curious about them. They have your finger smelling horrible after u take it out. I had to wash my hands three times to get rid of the smell!
Funny I get these but had my tonsils removed when I was 7 years old! I wonder how I can still be getting them? I found one where I could see it attached to the back of my throat and it seemed to be oozing directly out of the tissue. The area was irritated for several days while it was working it's way out.
I am so glad I found this site. Both my boyfriend and I have been experiencing the same problem for about 5 years now. I too have spoke to my doctor and has no clue about it.

Hmmmm..... Someone has recommended me to use a Saline solution on a daily basis. Hope this works for everyone.

Thanks!
I have been getting these things for years once in a while, but recently it's become a daily occurance, my throat is very irritated. Mine are actually in the tonsils on one side, I can push on my tonsil and it pushes them out. Sometimes they are solid chunks but sometimes it's more liquidy... So anyway, I went to see my doctor (I had taken pics with my phone to show him!) and he knew what I was talking about, said it's bacteria, food reminants that get stuck in those little crypts... I am having my tonsils out this summer because of it. I have had chronic tonsilitis my whole life and my doc. said the crypts came from scar tissue from it... Said its not a big problem but whatever.
Is what it's called. I have them too. My mom does as well. Super common.
If you have no gag reflex, or don't want one, you can get them out my kind of pushing on the tonsils...kind of like getting out a black head. You get used to it after a while...because feeling your tongue and throat scratch against the pieces is really irritating.
