That makes a lot of sense, thanks very much. However my problem has to do with the after effects, maybe 2/3 days. nothing as extreme as what we have been reading. I get some blurred vision which comes and goes. Had my eyes checked all ok. As it so far seems to be harmless no need to panic yet! have cut down on my alcohol too!

I'm going to add a bit to this, though I've yet to look up some of the advice mentioned above. I have had this for a year or more but much more instense in last few months and got sent by my optician to my doctors suspecting an eye infection. I'm now on my second lot of antibiotics but its not helped. It too get the same intense sudden pain in one eye, both eyes often go red, I get a red semicircle ring around my iris which has been scary and sometimes I wake up with them swollen. I have tried various experiments, as I thought it was alcohol and makeup, however, it has occoured without either, but is definitely made worse by both. What someone has recently suggested is it may be partly down to a preservative that there is currently being research into , which might appear in my mascara and alcohol and other things. What is perhaps of interest is that I have found prosecco doesn't do it, or at least a decent bottle, someone told me it doesn't have the same chemicals. I have also found an organic red wine called running duck doesn't do it. Cheap wines I feel it after half a glass (so I don't drink them anymore). I am getting to the point where I am going to have to take my own alcohol to bars. However, I would still say from my cutting out alcohol and make up that there are other possible causes.

My friends. My girlfriend told me my eye was partially open after she found me passed out on the couch. There after, the burning, redness and tearing occured. all in all this could be eye infection. open eye plus dehydration could lead to infection.

Just reading this thread, ditto! I have the same symptoms after a wine or vodka binge, though my left eye is now perms affected from a binge in dec. Eye hosp diagnosed bletharitis but that doesn't account for the alcohol link. I drink more prob 2-3 bottles wine per week, and prob could drink half a bottle of vodka weekend on avg.  Very strange, but I will cut down now, I don't want to keep poisoning myself, clearly my body is showing me something is wrong.

This happens to me.quite regularly.. has been for about 7 years now and I'm only 27. It generally only happens when I have consumed alot more alcohol than what I probably should have. One time it was so bad I couldn't even see out of my eye it was closed over with the swelling and sensitivity to light. Normally it is just really swollen, sensitive to light and sometimes I have tears streaming from it when I try to open it. Went to Opticians and they wern't sure what was causing it. They said it may have been a combination of an allergy to alcohol and having dry eyes. Have you found out anymore as to why it might be causing this??

Alcohol dilates the blood vessels and capillaries causing red eye. In Chinese medicine it is called heat in the body. I use the herb Crysanthemum, drink it as a tea and use the cooled teabag for 15 minutes over the eye. Feels good and reduces redness about 50% for me. The longer I am sober, the more improvement. Also, I buy it in powder form and follow the label instructions to cool down the heat in my body created by the alcohol. It's not a heat that you feel, but it is an overtaxing of body systems and toxicity from alcohol (or some disorders.) The dry skin issues I experience all over my body is because I am actually allergic to alcohol.

I am glad to have found this, I too suffer from this, but its getting worse, only started in last 2 years, I am 47, & have been a light drinker since my teenage years. anywhere from 1/2 a fifth a month to 4, usually 1 to less than 2.

my usual drink is usually Moonshine, yeah the illicit stuff, & govt shine when cant get any of the good stuff, plus I suppliment with a few flavored whiskeys, & normal whiskeys, vodka, rum, Tequila, & Absinthe, very little beer, probably under 6 a year.

anyway usually my left eye will start feeling like it has a hair, or grit in it, & will take until sometimes almost 24 hours to return to normal,  without drinking any alcohol with me splashing cold water in it to try to make it feel better.

yesterday I drank a bit more than normal, I am on vacation, & this time it did my right eye instead of my left, the bag under my eye is puffy & cheek is swollen, & eye is red, & its been over 24 hours with very little let up, right now is best its been since yesterday, I had to get my wife to drive me today when I wanted to go somewhere, as my eye wouldnt focus & it kept getting hazy & liquid over. & I am drinking a drink mixed with shine right now too.

I have had some teeth problems & have had 4 doses of antibiotics since last year, 1 bad absess last year & a different bad one this year. I never had this problem until last 2 years??? maybe?

another thing, I also get some eye problems, not as severe, when I try to do too much in a day, like stay up more than 24 hours, or work all day & try to drive or ride a motorcycle 500 miles, the next morning I may be several hours before my eyes will allow me to drive or ride, 300 or so miles of heavy traffic seems to be my breaking point, much over & my eyes start giving me some problems, however very light traffic I can push on closer to 500 miles, but in my younger days I could do 800+ mile days without any problems.

for me to stop drinking isnt an option, I can reduce, but not when Christmas gets here, especially thinking of having a gallon of good shine devided into 8 jars soaking in cheeries since their peak this summer, waiting to open this Christmas holidays, & to share with a few of my closest friends, along with a Tortuga Rum cake, going to be a great Christmas.

Yeah total boozehound here ma sel, Scottish, see. Too bad there aint no easy answers to this out there, other that cutting down of the alcohol. Reading this thread saves me going to the doctor though, who would normally quiz me about drink and shake his/her head. Suppose I could cut down a bit, coz lets face it alcohol is a poison and poison kills, all things in moderation folks. Good luck troops, but Im afraid the eyes have it, lol.

I was diagnosed with rosacea last year by my eye Dr., so when I did some research, I found that alcohol exacerbates the condition. You can have it on your face, as well as your scalp, so you may not be having dandruff, but a flare-up of rosacea. Look into it. The same could be causing the eye issue, because that's what happens to me a few times a year, so that's my guess.

It's because alcohol causes your body to produce cortisol, the fight or flight hormone, which causes disturbed sleep and consequently extremely tired eyes the next day

Crazy I found this on here! I always get a puffy eye when I drink Hamms or coors light! Not sure why but with these two beers I wake up looking like my wife sucker punched me while I was sleeping lol. With hard alcohol it never happens! Last a full day then goes away. Ice does not help my swelling. Im 29 yrs old and had a 12pak of coors light! Gonna stick with my Corona

I have the same problem after last night I had the puffy eye and had to wear sunglasses all day to barely cope. I have a dog that is a purebred pug who is black and his dandruff is bad. I usually put him to bed in a kennel but last couple night I have not since my better half is away , thus meant the drinking alcohol was a bit more too, I think I am almost certain now that having a pug dog with bad dandruff and they shed the most is the culprit here.

I've had this problem for about 5 years now, only ever happens in one eye at a time, but eye varies. Was told by docs that it is an allergy but it's seasonal, same time as hayfever. Antihistamines don't help.

I have exactly the same symptoms, my left upper lid feels as though I have something sharp in it like grit, it is irritable and I tend to rub it which makes my eye more red and watery. It is extremely sore. I have come to realise that this is only if I have had a lot of wine. It doesn't always happen but is becoming more frequent.

If you wake up with a swollen red eye it feels like something is scratching you, it is because of dehydration in adjunct with falling asleep with your eyelid slightly open. Your eye is just dry and inflamed. You can buy a little tube of a gel which is an eye lubricant you can put on at night along your lower eyelid which will prevent this from happening. You can find it at most local pharmacies.
