Most of these are virus--which can last from a few days to a few weeks. You cannot do anything about these - only mother nature, father time and chicken soup/clear liquids will help - antibiotics do not cure anything but bacteria infections. Another common cause of severe ear pain (approx. 60% of those that see an ENT) is due to joint pain - this actually can translate to a major ear ache. Things could also be sinus or teeth related--everything up there is interrelated a bit (ex. just like your ear ache was actually a tooth ache...quite commonly folks get a major tooth ache when they have a bad sinus infection (sinus caveties are below the teeth and when inflammed can cause major toothache).
Point being, if you are not getting the results you need from your general practitioner...go get a second opinion from a specialist - that's what they are there for.
I came back from a cruise with a persistant sore throat mostly on my left side and with ear pain also left side. It gets much worse at night when it is time to go to sleep, and is keeping me up. I have been gargling with salt water and taking lozenges, even throat spray. Now tonight I felt the back of my tongue and it seems to have bumps on it. This has been going on for about a week to 10 days now. What could it be and what should i do? I don't seem to have fever. It started right after I had a post nasal drip for a few nights on the cruise.
I have the same problem, and mine turned out to be the mumps! Go figure...
Wow! How did you get the mumps? Aren't most people inoculated against that? Can you tell me what happened?
Jesus you people scare me.... You probably have a simple ear infection that is draining into your throat, and these people have to tell you you probably have a form of arthritis, the mumps, or even meningitis. See your doc and get an antibiotic- First step.
Having my first cup of green tea. I have been smoking for 24 years, lost my dad to tobacco smoking cancer about 3 years ago...not something any-one should go through. I am just on day 2 of my new life, being a fresh-air-breather and my left ear and left jaw are so sore....I am on the path, yet the only thing that seams to cut the cravings "Nico-Derm Step 1" and as for the pain "Bare-Aspirin 500mg".
so i'm also another with these symptoms, been bed bound for a few days and the pain in my throat from swallowing is so intense i havent eaten in a few days, i'm taking paracetomol and antibiotics and ibuprofen every 4 hours but it just seems to be getting worse, i also fear if the swelling continues i'm not going to be able to breathe, i wanted to go to the docter but live with my gran, and she treats me like a child and will dispute anything i say, even if it means lieing so that i am wrong, so i'm out of luck on getting advice from her
has anyone got any advice that will help in any way, do i wait it out? or should i seek professional advice? all i know is i cannot continue not eating because it wont help
Some of the symptoms sound similiar to what I was feeling. Pain on the whole left side of my face from my ear down to my neck. I went to a lot of different doctors numerous times. I would recommend seeing an oral surgeon as well. A simple root canal solved my problem.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WE CAN'T FEEL GREAT EVERYDAY . GO OUT AND ENJOY YOUR DAY AND MAYE YOU WON'T BE SO CONSIOUS OF YOUR AILMENTS. i'VE HAD ALLERGIES ALL MY LIFE WITH DAILY SYMPTOMS- GET OVER IT AND FOCUS ON SOMETHONG ELSE
I have the exact same symptoms as you guys except for the fact that for me, the right side of my throat leading to my right ear. Also my tongue towards the right half feels like it`s dead!...
To the person asking about the "vein" in your neck running from your ears and what not... ther is tube that runs from your inner ears and down the side of your neck that actually does connect to your throat, it's called your eustacion tube. It has several functions one of which used be gills. Yes believe it or not when you were a fetus growng in your mommy's tummy you actually had a sort of psudo-gills that helped you breath while you were floating around in the womb; that's why that tube runs into your throat. Now that you are on land breathing air for yourself though, you don't need all that extra plumbing to breath, but that eustacion tube still plays a very important role in everyday life. First of all let me tell you, it's not a very good idea to just go digging around in your ear, ok , a dr once told me you should never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear, heh lame joke right, that's cuz you can't fit it in ther, the point hes trying to make is that your ears have there own mechanism for cleaning themselves and that obsessive cleaning can just push the wax deeper into the ear and cause blockage, or you can damage the organs in your ears!( yes, ears have "organs" they also have bones called ossicles) Your ear produces wax that traps dirt, germs, and crud and keeps it from getting deep into your body. The wax turns into a small ball and falls out right outside the ear (where you should clean) What doesnt fall out, which is mostly liquid, travels down the eustacion tube, where it meets up with the snot that slides down your naso-pharynx( back of nostrils/ top of throat) and runs down yor gullet to hang out with the gallons of saliva that dilutes your stomach acid (hydrochlorich by the way). yummy. gags. When you prod your ears or sometimes because of bacteria/pathogens your body reacts by creating extra fluid to soothe and flush out the area, this can over load the eustacion tube and cause it to crease or flatten ( sometimes it just does it on its own think of it as a flesh straw) wich can cause build up and stretching at the kink, which equals pain and an inner ear infection. Chronic kinking of the tubes(especially in young children) is fixed by putting "tubes" in the ear that keep the eustacion tubes open for optimal drainage all the time until the tubes oneday fall out and hopefully you won't need them, if not you get them again. I don't agree with my doc 100% about cleaning my ears, i still use q tips, but i know now not to go overboard and to excercise care and common-sense when cleaning. And as for the alchohol, i would say that's a bad idea. Alchohol will dry out your ear and your body will try to overcompensate for what it has lost and it could have other nasty side affects we just won't go into, but what is a safe alturnative is to take a q tip dipped in a small amount of peroxide and gently swab any bad build up that may accompany an ear infection (not for regular cleaning) when the air hits it it will oxidise and eat away at the wax so that it can break apart and fall out the ear naturally. Remember not all bacteria is bad and thats why you should only take antibiotics when you have to. But that's another long subject that i'll have to save for another time. Im sorry about the spelling but im possitive that the information is accurate and i hope it helps somone out ther.
I have the same symptons. I had a ear pain for about a week. So i made a appiontment and the doctor gave antibotics and ear drops. Well that made things ten times worse because my doctor subscribed the wrong medicine. So, I made an appiontment with a different doctor and what we are experiencing is a outer ear infection. Dr. Callen of Tiverton, MA. said to use the antibotics and he presribed me a different kind of ear drops. And he told me to use a hot water bottle on the ear when i feel pain and also use a blow dryer to dry up the ear infection caused by a swimmers ear. Then after a week of that i should use rubbing alcohol to extract any bacteria left but make sure it has competly dried up. SO PREETY MUCH GO TO THE DOCTORS IT'S NOT THAT BAD, but it does hurt bad i thought i got shot in the ear the first day i had it, but that also could be because I'm only 13 and Iv'e never expeirenced any thing that hurt so much!
I have been experiencing the symptoms of sore throat with ear pain. It's not a typical scratchy throat accompanied by a cold coming on. My throat is swollen in the back on both sides. It hurts to swallow and I feel pain in my ears when I swallow. It's really bad at night when I lay down. It started about a week ago when I got a bacterial infection in my finger from a nail shop. I went to emergency and got a tetnis (sp?) shot and antibiotics for my finger. But when I mentioned my throat felt sore, they just sprayed with "steroids" and sent me on my way. The finger is getting better but my throat is getting worse because now it has my ears hurting too. I do not have a cold or feel like I have a fever either. I'm going back to emergency in abot 30 minutes. I can't take the pain and discomfort any longer.
im 14 years old and i too have these pains rite now :-( its so sure wen i swallow it hurts my throat n left ear :'( i have talking a lemsip n strepsils but no good im worryed whatit would be and if it will go any ideas?
you got some weirdos on here giving your worrying replies, its probs something as simple as middle ear infection which goes away after 1 week or 2. the guy that said it might be a tumor..... "right yu need to go die from a reply like that" i it was a tumor you would star coughing up blood, same with cancer. go see you GP instead of surfing these Bullsh1t health forums .....
