I'm glad i found this. I have been having the same problems for over a year. I am 44 and I am not a parent but I have had 2 misscaraiges. THere are times when i can't even stand up straight due to the pain -and it's a STOMACH pain, not uteran pain. Curious, how many of those who have posted have been on the Pill for over 3 years straight? And for the poster who asked who may have a tilted uterus - that would be my situation. and i was on the pill for over 10 years continuously in the mid eighties to early nineties. My stomach problems during my period have caused me to not eat anything, if i want a bit of relief. I have been to see 2 different doctors and they have both told me that it is pre-menopause and getting on hormone treatments will help. I'm not sure that's the answer. And the pain - stomach pain - is worse than cramps! I have found - and I don't advocate this BUT, having 1-2 glasses of RED wine helps! Could there be a corallation between being on the pill for an extending time period and the onset of peri-menopause?

Its amazing so many other women experience this! After years of painful (understatement) periods and one bout of endometriosis and Dr's always prescribing pills, pills, pills, and finally consulting for a hysterectomy, I found something that worked for me.

Thinking I also had an ulcer ( but wondering why it only hurt on my cycle) I began homeopathic remedy searches and found aloe vera juice taken regularly especially near your cycle is helpful. Its cleansing and may help with mild constipation or blockage that adds to the pain. I also stopped eating red meat, pork, and most dairy and began to eat organic whenever I could. This includes the stuff you eat every day, coffees, creamers, breads, etc.

The kicker was a book I read called Natural Cures. One tiny line that suggested reading (sooo scary) I used many packets every day on cereal, coffee, ice tea, baking. Within 3 months of no Splenda not only was the stomach pain gone but the horrid periods Id suffered with were pain free!! As in NO pain! Im sure it was a combination of the different things but dont stop trying. I have since regressed a bit these last months and welcomed back the stomach pain this last period so Im sure that one of these remedies does really work. Good luck to all of you. So nice to know were not alone.

I am so glad to have found this thread...was getting worried that it was only me in this situation...
I 've been having these stomach pains for the past 6 months now...at first i thought it was just indigestion...i also had heartburns...but mostly stomach pain and lots of nausea...this happened mostly after i ate too much food or certain foods - e.g. green and coloured peppers, fatty food... Doctor told me it was acids...had an ultrasound which showed nothing...now i just did some blood tests and am waiting for the results...doctor also suggested that it might be i have an Irritable Bowel Syndrome, however after reading on the syndrome, though i do have lots of symptoms similar, it still doesn't explain my situation. I am just 26yrs old, never had children and been married for 2 years...after reading this i have suspicion that this is happening to me during ovulation as well...i will now start monitoring these pains to check out...if so will ask to check my hormones as your suggested ...if you have any other suggestions it would greatly help. Thanks

I too am so glad to have found this...I am 37 otherwise very healthy with three children and have been having the same stomach pain off and on for a few years....in the last year it has been worse and with every period. My pain occurs on days 2-3 or 4 my heaviest days. It is same same that you all have described shooting stomach pain (not menstrual cramps) high in my stomach. I call it the kicked in the stomach feeling, need to bend over to function. My periods are very regular and seem to be less intense (pain and flow) every other cycle. On the lighter cycle months the stomach pain is there but much less intense. There is a definite link to more flow more pain for me. Things I have tried...I started prilosec the week before and ran the full 14 day course...this did not help. Gas-X (simethicone) does help a little but only for a short time. When I spoke to my doctor he referred me to the nurse prac. who suggeted it was a hormone release issue and taking ibuprofin 3 at a time every 5 hours would help. This somehow effects the release of hormones. This does really help. It does not work perfectly but it does help. The important thing is to not go more that 4 to 5 hours without the ibuprofin. It sounds like a lot of ibuprofin but being so desperate am willing to take it. I also take beano before I eat something that I am afraid may cause excess gas during my cycle..this also seems to help. I did a hormone cream (I used an Arbonne product) a year or so ago this also helps, In fact I thinking of going back on it again...it is a balancing cream, a little pricey and I remember it taking a few cycles before it helped (by the way it also helped with flow and PMS). Just some thoughts...I think Doctors too often want to put you on BC pills...just not an option for me. I would suggest the hormone balancing cream. My Doctor did not think these creams were beneficial...but since he does not have a period I will stick with what I know.

Hi all! I am only 27 and have been having the same problem you have all been describing about sharp pain in the stomach during period (sometimes it continues long after the period is gone). Feels like a rock inside and I often bend over a bit to avoid the really really sharp pain. I see some of you have interest in natural cures. I have been taking fresh ginger juice shots every morning on empty stomach for about a week before my period starts. Just wash and lightly peal fresh small piece of ginger and squeeze with a juicer for maybe a quarter of a tea cup, then just drink it like that. Its kind of spicy but don't let it bother you as it also can be a great cure for your cold and soar throat. Maybe at least for three months during the last year, when I was really systematic in taking the ginger juice, not only my period pain was eliminated significantly that I didn't even have to take any medication and I felt great, but also the sharp pains were gone. I originally had done a research about ginger juice benefits (I am a fresh juice freak) and read that ginger helps with menstrual cramps in the following way. During period we have more gas production then usual. So what ginger does, it eliminates the gaps created by your food in your digestion system pushing down and letting out the gas. This in turn eliminates the rock-hard feeling in your stomach and the cramps associated with gas. Again the ginger helped me on few occasstions and didn't on other occassions. So I don't know if its because on some occasstions I was more careful and systematic and not so much on other occassions. But it is certainly worth trying. If/when you decide to try make sure you do it systematically for at least 10 days before your period every day a quarter of a tea cup. Also hot fresh ginger tea is very soothing and relaxing and can have somewhat similar effect. (though not as powerful). Just chop fresh ginger into few pieces and boil for couple of minutes in water then drink it. I still have the pain this month and its killing me and I regret every month during period that I didn't follow the ginger routine. Please share experiences, anything will help as my doctors can't figure out what it is. Once I tell them its during period more or less, they just relate everything to period and end the discussion there.

ive been having stomach cramps and not being able to eat or sleep am i starting my period ?

It is quite natural, specially in early . Also, it is not very necessary indeed. The symptoms may be nausea, spotting, bloating, constipation, etc. However, sometimes it may be quite severe too.
It is highly recommended that pills should be strictly avoided. Pills give relief for sometime, but, their side effects can be worse in future.
Some natural remedies include:
> Drinking enough water.
> Eating less salty and more fibrous food.

I am a 25 year old girl. I have terrible pain in my stomach the first 3 days of my period. It is not related to uterus cramping and really hurts my stomach. It gets worse after eating. I would be thankful if anyone can help me diagnose and treat the problem.

Hi everyone! Well if you guys are still looking for a solution to the cramping/stomache pain menstural problem, i would like to suggest an all-natural progesterone cream. That's what i use when i have those pains during or before my period, and it works great, and within the hour too! Like many of you, I went to my doctor with this complaint a few years ago and she tried to put me on yaz. Now, I know enough to know that that's a bad idea; i didnt want artificial hormones, and especially not estrogen! So I went to a natural health doctor who told me that i had a slight estrogen dominance, and that increases in stress can make it worse. She started me on sublingual progesterone tablets and chaste tree extract pills (vitex) for the first three months, after which the cramps and stomache aches were gone, and my period was normal in both size and timing! But since I do consume foods that likely contain artificial hormones and/or soy products, and have some stressful events in my life, i do use the progesterone cream (mine is organic) when i feel the pains coming back. i usually only need it for the first two or three days! And every year or so, when i feel that i might be falling out of balance, i do another three months of the sublinguals and chaste tree pills! Its been working great for me!

subarue: I am 26 and am having the same stomach pain. It is not in my uterus. I have also been on the pill for more than three years. I do not know what the cause is but it hurts to stand up. My doctor proscribed taking Prilosec OTC for the week preceeding my period and that has seemed to help. Have you found a cure or diagnosis since your post?

I am so excited (and sad) to see that other people have the same pain I had for many years. After talking to a friend I finally figured out that taking Aleve for my cramps actually caused the pain in my stomach. I had the same pain as all of you for years, the doctors checked me out every way we could think of and found nothing. When I stopped the Aleve it was all gone. But then..... after being pain free for over a year I was taking Motrin for a leg problem and had my period. Not good! The pain is back. Sooooo, I guess when I should be starting my period I have to make sure to not take anything. I hope this helps someone out there. Kinda funny how simple it turned out to be (although the doctors still don't understand how this causes pain).

I am having the same discomfort and it happens only when I get my period.  Has anyone found a solution to this or a quick home remedy?

I am 33 and for the past 5 years I have dealt with the exact symptoms you are describing. I thought I was alone in this because my gyn never offered to run tests. She said to try birth control. Since it has helped she isn't too concerned. I have reduced my dairy intake. I now drink soy milk and even without the birth control my symptoms are a little easier to deal with. I was having such severe stomach pain before during and after my periods that I was scared to eat anything. Even drinking water made my stomach feel like I swallowed a bowling ball. Laying down, standing, sitting.. Nothing helped. I left work one day in severe pain and drove my self to the ER gripping my steering wheel. To me it felt like contractions in my stomach. Burning, stabbing, squeezing pain and it took my breath away. They took an X-ray and saw nothing but sent me home with Motrin. I cried some more. I wish there was an explanation for this. I'm glad I'm not totally Alone. My gyn also recommended a total hysterectomy but I'm not ready for that. I do continue the birth control because I can't stand the pain. I usually also experience a great deal of pain with bowel movements during my period.. Everything seems to hurt.. Even get migraines but thru all of that I've never missed a day of work or school because I don't think some people understand. I medicate and push thru it. I've been know to skip right on to my next pack to avoid my cycle. Someone please help.

Hi!

I don't know if this is too late to post a reply because this has been up for about five years, but here goes. I'm fifteen and right now am experiencing pain in my upper abdomen after eating. It is the first day of my period, and this has never ever happened before! Never in my upper abdomen. Anyway, I saw this while looking up what the pain might mean if period related. Almost every inconvinient pain is always period related, I've discovered. I took an IBprofen and that doesn't seem to be helping, so I think I'll take a nap. I hope my pain doesn't end up to be something other than one of those typical, inexplicable menstrual-related pains, and it is serious and I will wake up from my nap and be paralyzed and in a coma or something (I guess that would mean I wouldn't wake up) all because I didn't get my irritating pain checked out sooner. Sooooo, yeah. Just wanted to add to this long and diverse list of period-related abdominal pain.
