I TOTALLY understand what all of you are going through!! I have been getting these "Shortness of Breath Attacks" for over 30yrs!! Not being able to take a deep satisfying breath is sheer torture! Not knowing when or where you will be "attacked" is insane. I have been to lots of physicions; the allergist dr. said its allergies, the shrink dr. said it's stress or a panic attack,  stomach dr said its your hernia or acid -refux, lung specialist dr said its the extra weight on your stomach, family dr. Said its sleep apnea.....

I hate how western medicine "separates" the human body! That's why I kept getting different diagnosis from different dr.s that are specialists on different areas of the body! I'm just ONE BODY!! Since all of these dr.s don't talk to each other, none of them ACTUAL  pinpoint the actual problem!!

My theory is this; ITS A COMBINATION OF ALL OF THESE THINGS! Here's an example; let's say you already have a hernia and/or acid reflux desease. Now all of a sudden you have an allergic response to something, (which could be anything since allergies can develope anytime even if you weren't allergic to something before!), this allergic response, coupled with the fact that your lungs are already compromised because of the hernia and/or acid reflux, causes you to become a little short of breath. This causes you to tense up with stress and/or panic, which then causes you to have even more shortness of breath!

i started my "recovery" from this nightmare by first taking some benedryl at the first sign of any shortness of breath. The benedryl stopped the allergic reaction & also relaxed my muscles because thats a side effect of benedryl. If you can figure out whats causing your allergic reaction, that is the best solution! (But usually, that is hard to do), the 2nd thing I did was some major dusting & cleaning in my house! I than starting bathing my pets every week.  Lastly, I hit the treadmill & swapped out my bacon cheeseburgers for some salads to get the extra weight off my stomach that was compressing my lungs!

I still have my hernia which still causes me to have acid-refux/gerd, which still causes me to have occasional shortness of breath, Because I haven't decided on if I want to get the surgery to fix it or not, But as soon as any sign of shortness of breath starts, I take the benedryl and I'm able to function pretty good!

well that's my story! Hope it helps someone!

I have dealt with a swolen throat, stomach pain(tightness), head ache and anxiety for about two years and after first finding out I was allergic to yellow 5&6 dye(that caused me to have insomnia for a year) I have recently found out I am also allergic to carmine(red 4 dye). After realizing it was in almost all of my makeup I stopped wearing the cosmetics with those ingredients and went about a week without any reaction. It was so great, I forgot how wonderful it was to breathe so normally! I recently had another reaction and am so frustrated because I know this isn't in my head and I have already had a food allergy test. I'm going to see what my options are but for now I'm my own guinea pig. :( ... hope this helped someone!

Everything you said hit home for me. Mine started in October last year. At first it was just a slight feeling of pressure in my chest while in bed. When I rolled over on my side and it went away. The next day while driving to work it felt like my lungs or diaphragm was bouncing around inside my chest forcing air in and out of my lungs at the slightest bump. Then the tightness was all day every day. Feeling like someone was squeezing me. I couldn't take a deep enough breath or fully yawn. At night if I laid on my back it felt as if someone was pressing down on my sturnum. I would wake up gasping for air. Then one day at work it felt like even talking put me out of breath. I had to concentrate on breathing. I felt light-headed and my arms and hands tingle and I nearly fainted so I went to the emergency room. A couple hours and a few thousand dollars later I was told there was nothing physically wrong with me and that it sounded like anxiety. I suffer from social anxiety disorder and told the doctor I've lived with it my whole life THIS was NOT anxiety as it was effecting me even at my most relaxed. My heart was beating fast and my blood pressure was normal but I could feel my heart beating like never before. It was firm. Hard. I asked the Dr. If I could have damaged the muscles in my chest and that that could cause these symptoms and he said it was possible. I went home and took 14 days off of work, not seeing another Dr. Because I was now broke, and started to feel better. By December I felt almost totally recovered, though I still took it easy at work for fear I wasn't. I still had trouble with the pain when lifting or moving heavy objects but never lasted longer than a day and was not as severe. Then last month, feeling enough time had passed that I could go back to my usual routine I lifted a treadmill I purchased for my girlfriend out of my car and into the house. Not very heavy and not too big. As soon as I got it inside and started putting it together I felt those familiar sensations. And now, here i am laying on the floor. Heart beating hard, pressure on the center of my chest, short of breath, unsatisfied yawns/deep breathes, like someone squeezing my ribs. I'm almost convinced (for me at least) this is muscle related. Possibly even a bruised diaphragm. The anxiety comes from feeling these symptoms and not knowing what it is or how to treat it which in turn makes the symptoms worse but it has to be physical. But, I am no doctor. I may need to go back to one as I may have to miss more work. I hope we can find out what this is and how to fix it. And without outrageous dr. bills would be a nice bonus.

It's definitely a psychosomatic disorder. I've had the same thing for many years. It has gotten worse but I have been much more stressed. The mind is very powerful and can make you think all kinds of things R going wrong. At least in my case when I'm at work and eating I get bloated, dizzy, pressure on chest, this all gives me anxiety and its a vicious circle. But ironically when I take a xanax and have a few beers Ill realize that it all has dissappeared. I only take the xanax when I absolutely have to but I have taken all of the tests, echocardiogram etc. etc. and nothing is wrong w me.

Oh and consistent problems breathing. Feeling like I can't get a breath, something might be blocking my wind pipe, pressure on the lungs, lungs not working properly, the whole deal. It's mental

I know this is old, but your symptoms sound like possible gastroparesis or another stomach motility issue. Have you ever been checked for it? It involves having a semi-paralyzed stomach; so your stomach muscle takes a long time to digest food while causing nutritional malabsorption. Digestive enzymes, probiotics, and medications can help stomach motility issues.
