I was wondering as well because i also have the same thing. Mine started after I ate something one day about 2 months ago and has been aching ever since. It seems to be behind the esophagus if i poke my finger from the outside of my neck on the left and behind my esophagus. One day it started feeling better and i was doing some pullups and it cracked really loud and felt like my esophagus broke in two and again has been hurting ever since. But no swollen nodes and my tonsels have been gone for years. Just a sore neck behind the esophagus and to the left. It hurts really bad to swallow.

I see a lot of concerns but very few replies. Hope my solution helps at least someone.

I am a 30 year old female and had been suffering for the past 1 year with similar symptoms. I work at computer all day. I used to feel a pain in the left side of my throat/neck area but couldn't quite figure out whether it was from inside or outside. Because the symptoms were all mixed up. Sometimes, I would feel like I have a lump when swallowing and sometimes, I would have more physical pain near the left jaw area radiating all the way back of the earlobes making me feel that its an ear pain from inside. The pain would aggravate in the nights and I would be the most alright in the morning when I wake up.

I got an ultrasound of my thyroid, an ENT did a endoscopy of the throat, mri, cat of the cervical spine and other blood work. I also thought it was GERD and was treated for it. Luckily everything came out normal but I was not sure whether I was happy because that meant the problem was still not solved.

After an year of misery and numerous doctor visits including extraction of my molar teeth by a dental surgeon, it turned out to be a pain radiating all the way from my back, affecting the sternocleidomastoid which in turn caused the ear pain, throat/neck area etc.

Please do check out your back, neck, sternocleidomastoid area with a good physiotherapist or chiropractor or any other doctor concerning neuromuscular parts. For me, it cured most of the pain except that I still cannot sleep on my left side comfortably. But from where I was a year back this is probably heaven where I am now. Hope it helps at least one of you.

it's CAROTIDYNIA folks, google it

was diagnosed 5 days ago

symptoms can be anything from unilateral sore throat to jaw, ear and face pain

tenderness and pain when area over the carotid artery bifurcation is palpated

in older patients (and others as well) must rule out vascular reasons (ct and blood work)

otherwise treated like a migraine with indomethacin 50 mg 3x day for several days

Interesting seeing so many people complaining of the same thing.  I have had this for a few years now.  My primary brushed it off.  I would say the pain is infrequent.  It seems to come on every few months, sometimes it seems to be associated with some sinus symptoms.  It is an ache and tender to the touch on the right side of my neck next to my adam's apple.  I can feel a pulse right near the center of the pain.  I think there is some swelling but it is not visible.  It has me a bit worried and I'm wondering what type of specialist to see, ear-nose-and-throat maybe?

I am having these exact same symptoms. Down to feeling like ligaments moving and how it comes and goes. It is a little unnerving. I don't know which direction to go with the doctors either. I am having a well check soon and it is top on my list if questions. I would like to get to the bottom of this. I want to rule out anything serious.

So I am curious, my symptoms fit this pathology 100%, but it's not clear how it's actually diagnosed. CAT SCAN? Or similar? My doctor wants to stick a camera down my throat but it sounds like, if this is indeed the cause, camera won't show anything. How was your finally diagnosed?

I have the same signs and symptoms that you all are talking about. My problems all started back in high school about 5 years ago. I had a lot of acid reflux, anxiety, i ended up with a peptic ulcer and they thought I had celiac disease but that got ruled out. After a few years and many doctors and hospitals we found some stuff toat least minimize my problems. Now just 3 month ago I get the same symptoms you guys had. Lump or something feeling in my throat weird swollowing feeling. I think i have acid reflux as well again. my neck feels swollen, and my throat feels tight. Cold stuff makes it worse and sugar does as well. I am FREAKING OUT. I am 20 woman going to college in Nursing school and I hope and pray this is not serious or cancer. Ive been taking Apple Cider Vinegar, DGL, been drinking lots of water trying not to eat to much sugar, no caffine and not much soda. But it seems to keep happening and somewhat getting worse. IDK WHAT TO DO. PLEASE HELP!

I'm so glad I found this thread...and it is still getting posts years after it began! My "pain in the neck" came on suddenly about two weeks ago, and I was (am) freaking out. Now I will seek medical advice with some helpful knowledge. Big thanks to all here.

I have pretty much the same symptoms as the rest of you; pain that goes down the left side of my throat and feels deep, yet muscular, at the same time, having a sore throat feeling, and, maybe a bit of the globus hysteritcus feeling, as well. The pain just began for me around 3-4 weeks ago. It goes away for a few days and the comes back. I did some neck stretching exercises today and it seem to have flared the pain back up. So, I think I have partially narrowed down the problem. I am a Facebook addict and spend way too much time at my laptop, leaning over trying to get a better look at the screen, often resting my chin on my hand to look at the screen. In addition, I also used to watch t.v. lying on my stomach, using my hands to support my head. So, I'm pretty sure that I've pulled some sort of muscle on the side of my neck.

I'm going to do my best to change my bad habits and probably use a heating pad on my neck. I think if I just give my neck a rest, stop sleeping on my left side, and try not to strain the muscle for a while, things will improve. But, even as I'm typing this post, I've rested my chin on my hands a couple of times to see the screen better. I may have to stop using the laptop on the table and use it on my lap, instead. That would change my posture and the angle of my head, and probably help me to see the screen better.

My sterneoclmastoid? muscle on the right was swollen, I have had a sore throat for 3 months, it feels like my thyroid is hot and the heat sensation goes up into my right ear, it doesn't stay, it comes and goes. Every night I wake up at least 4-5 times with a sore throat that feels like strep throat. When I swallow I some time have the clicking/popping feeling too, and sometimes when swallowing it feels like there is a lump in my throat. I had an x-ray done, thryoid ultrasound, tons of blood work, and today I had the camera thing down the nose into the throat, ALL came back fine. ENT Dr. thinks it is the cervical muscles in my neck, wants me to go to physical therapy. It's hard to understand how sore neck muscles could make a throat feel so sore.

I have the same thing. I'm on a merry go round of doctors and no body knows what it is. The quack I saw today told me it was anxiety. I'm a therapist and would sure recognise anxiety if that was it. It goes for a while but at the moment it seems to be there all the time. Like you, it's deep in my neck and it's driving me crazy.
I don't know if it's connected but I have noticed that when it's really bad, I get pains in my elbow joints as well.
Hope somebody will come up with an answer soon.
Good luck.

If you are in constant pain-the pain doesn't have to be excrutiating but, you need a CAT scan or ultrasound of the area to rule out carotid artery dissection (which can lead to stroke/blood clots) or other significant conditions. If you have accompanying neck pain on that side, jaw pain, odd vision issues, tingling in the face/numbness, drooping eye, or you experience weakness on one side, rush to the ER and don't wait.
