This same pain in the left side of my neck just started this past Sunday (4 days ago) and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. Just like everyone is describing. Not my throat but near my adam's apple, on the left side and it hurts when I turn my head a certain way, tilt my head, push on it, sneeze, or when i sniff thru my nose...it has me worried too. I keep thinking maybe a thyroid nodule or something...lymph node, tendon?? i don't know but I'm giving it a week and going to my doctors who i'm sure will put me thru a ton of tests...he's very thorough and I'm kind of dreading it. Reading all these posts makes me worry a bit less though...guess i'll live. (I hope)

I'v had this tenderness on the right side of my neck since my late twenties, when i would press it ,it would feel like something was lose, clicking ... At that time i had sinus problems and a lot of stress.. i took a lot of vit c and got rid of the sinus problem ,but that tenderness comes and goes and know i am 67 yrs old... Retired and i still take vit c ... which i think helps with the tenderness .. Vit c is great for inflammation, and i still don't have joint or even muscle pain after exercising...

Went to the ENT and got scoped. They didn't see anything. They gave me a pamphlet on acid reflux and said you can try this...

damn i got the same thing.....but it isnt for a long period of time.usually bursts of pains that last from 1 minute to 3.when the bursts happen the only way it hurts a little is if i dont move and dont swallow. If I swallow then a sharp pain comes from no where and it dulls within the next two seconds.and it happens randomly through my life.just recently started a couple years ago.people tell me to go to a doc but if u all have went and havnt got a diagnostic then there is no point of me going.

Well I guess im part of the club. For me, no change when i swallow, turn my head or any other action. But when im aware of the discomfort, I can press deep inside the left side of neck, just to the left of the throat, but not a glad or anything. when its at its worse, it feels like a dull ache or pulsing. other times it fades away.

My GP said he didnt feel anything, and normal blood panel showed nothing. I hate these mysteries.

As far as special situations, i am on low dose of lisinopril 5mg for blood pressure (started taking after this had already existed.)
quitting smoking using nicotine lozenges. Lots of stress going on in life.

Hey guys, i think i have the same probelm here too. Deep inside my mouth, throat (left side) i have a small spot, which i cannot see but can touch with my tongue and finger, when i press on it it starts to hurt. But other than it doesnt hurt, i was thinking it was cancer too, but reading your posts it seems unlikely.

Any ideas wat i should do?

I get the same thing, but on the right side. Also, that popping / clicking sound when I move my neck. Its in the area inside between the jaw joint and just behind that gland under the jawbone. Theres two bumps if you press in, on ether side just behind the jaw bone, just below the earlobe. If I press them the right one sometimes clicks / pops, the same sound and is sore. Sure it must be a tendon of some sort. Hmmm... %-)

What many of you are describing is glossopharyngeal neuralgia. It is inflammation of the ninth cranial nerve. There are many things that can cause this inflammation and figuring out what is irritating yours is the key to fixing it. Many people it is uncontrolled GERD or postnasal drip due to allergies, even TMJ. On rare occassion it is caused by an artery in the neck laying on the glossopharyngeal nerve and requires surgery to fix. This usually only happens in people over 40 years old and more often men. It can also be irritated by other infections in the throat since this nerve lies in the back of the throat. Bacterial or viral infections can cause it. Bacterial infections should be cleared up by antibiotics. Viral infections will usually resolve on their own, though there are recurrent and persistent viral infections which on occasion can cause this type of inflammation, such as the herpes virus and HPV. Even rarer it could be a tumor in the brain stem or neck causing the pressure on the nerve. If you have any of the aforementioned conditions it is very important to tell your ENT, to help them diagnose. If you have non of the above conditions and the pain persists, you should have an MRI with dye to look for tumors and to see where the blood vessels are lying. This is only for those who have a severe pain in the throat to one side or or the other which feels deep and can radiate to the jaw and/or ear, which can be brought on by chewing, swallowing, sneezing. Often swallowing hard will hurt really bad but relive the severe pain. If no cause is found, medical treatment with Elavil or one of many anticonvulsant drugs like Topamax may help. I hope you all get better soon!

Head and Neck Manifestations of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
VANITA AHUJA, M.D.,
National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland
MYRON W. YENCHA, M.D.,
Naval Hospital, Pensacola, Florida
LORENZ F. LASSEN, M.D.,
Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Virginia A patient information handout on gastroesophageal reflux disease, written by the authors of this article, is provided on page 885.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the most common esophageal disease. Besides the typical presentation of heartburn and acid regurgitation, either alone or in combination, GERD can cause atypical symptoms. An estimated 20 to 60 percent of patients with GERD have head and neck symptoms without any appreciable heartburn. While the most common head and neck symptom is a globus sensation (a lump in the throat), the head and neck manifestations can be diverse and may be misleading in the initial work-up. Thus, a high index of suspicion is required. Laryngoscopy can confirm the diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux. Erythema of the posterior larynx may be seen, and the true vocal cords may be edematous. Treatment should be initiated with a histamine H2 receptor blocker or proton pump inhibitor. Lifestyle changes are also beneficial. Untreated, GERD can lead to chronic laryngitis, dysphonia, chronic sore throat, chronic cough, constant throat clearing, granuloma of the true vocal cords and other problems.

i had this for years. turned out to be corodit itus - inflamation of the sheath that covers the artery - ibuprofin therapy is the answer..every 4 hours for 2 days or until the pain is gone. Flares up mostly in times of stress - usually only women get after or around the age of 40

Only when i swallow. Its a mild pain but i am hoping it doesnt get worse. Could it relate to my tonsels i wonder? but like i said no throat pain. It does hurt a little when i caugh tho. I just started feeling the pain about a week ago and now i'm scared to death to read this three year thread with little to no answers. Pain is about the same: Mine is on the right side, very localized VERY tender spot deep in my upper neck just under my jaw. Not in my throat, and no sore throat. Hurts to swallow, especially liquids for some reason, but everything hurts as of now. Pain shoots up into my face on the right side and creates nasty headaches that I never have gotten before. I have a horrible ache in my temple and ear as well and a nausea that I think is coming from the pain. I have seen a doctor (on my crappy school insurance...) and they can find nothing as of yet. I can't take ibueprofin due to having an ulcer, and Tylenol doesn't do much for the pain.

I am only 24 and this is adding to my already monumental stress level. I am already in therapy for a deep clinical depression and this is really not helping me. I have had extensive experience with pulled muscles in my neck and this is not a muscle! I had my tonsils removed years ago as well and have had no major dental procedures done. I am really freaking out about his because I don't think I can live with this pain for much longer. Please post if you find something!! I will keep checking and add anything I find.
