Not yet. Taking potassium and magnesium supplements as described above. Morning weakness seems to have lessened or gone away. Don't know if it's placebo or not. Also drinking an electrolyte solution in the morning and throughout the day to make sure I stay hydrated. When this happened last year, took blood pressure readings in the morning and they were pretty low. Doctor took EKG and blood work, all OK.
Haven't had more pronounced episodes that last a minute or two and sit me down for over two months now, but that's the way it usually works. They occur without rhyme or reason, then go away and everything is OK.
Always interested in other's experience with these symptoms: when, where, how often, doctor's feedback
I am both relieved and concerned by the number of similar reports in this blog, as no-one has really been given a diagnosis. I've had these symptoms for over three years and have previously been told that it's a form of painless migraine. Attacks seem to peak for a number of weeks and then reduce to nil for months on end, before returning. I've recently experienced 8 attacks in 4 weeks and have today gone back to the doctor. Neck and Thorasic x-rays tomorrow and bloood tests next week, looking for calcium deficiencies amongst other things, which may also tie into the comments re the menopause and post menopausal women. I will advise the outcome in due course.....
It sure does happen to men.
For the past two years I have been getting symptoms of sudden muscle fatigue starting in the upper body core between the shoulder blades area and radiating into the upper shoulders , then quickly rushing through both arms.
You feel the onset and know what is about to happen yet cannot do anything to stop it. I mostly feel it on the underside of the arm muscles, happening very rapidly and lasting not more than perhaps 5 minutes total. Gradually subsiding where the muscles feel a sort of heat going through them and then I am left with the feeling of extreme fatigue, like I had just finished a set of lifting weights and the muscles were trying to recover. (I used some of the descriptions from another post as they describe mine perfectly)
Perhaps most men assume it is heart related and don't share it with others. I have had similar symptoms for the past two years and been checked by a host of medical professionals. It is not heart related. All blood work comes back fine.
I have an appointment with a neurologist this week and if I get a definitive diagnosis I will come back and post.
I'm a 59 and a half year old male with no health problems. BP a few days ago in a doctors office (I was there for a cough that won't go away) was 128/74 pulse at 58. I take no medications whatsoever. What you (jadeacres) described above has happened to me periodically ( every several months) over the last few years. Now I had my third episode in the last week or so, and its got me worried. Your description is exactly to the letter what I feel. I'll be headed to the doctor in the next week. I'll be looking forward to your post, and will do the same if I find anything out.
To both above comments. There seems to be no trigger. Symptoms started when I was 56 years old (two years ago). I have had the bouts of extreme dizziness but not noticed the tight muscles in the neck or back of the head. I happened to have an "attack" while they were monitoring my heart searching for the cause and it did NOT show up on the 48 hr heart recorder device I was wearing at the time. This pretty well rules out any heart related issues. These things can come in groups as I have had two in a day but I can go for months with no sign of it happening. I own and work a chicken farm which made my doctors think it was over stressed muscles but my chiropractor assures me it is not a spinal/muscle condition. All very strange but hopefully the neurologists I will be seeing in the morning will have seen or heard of this before and get right to the diagnosis. I will certainly post as soon as I find out.
I have exactly the same symtoms. I 1st had 1 episode in my arms about 2 years ago. Lately, I have had 2 episodes in my legs in the last 2 months. Ite goes from the bottom of my buttocks to my knees. It only lasts a minute or 2 and then it passes. I wondered about MS but I'm 77. I had a minimally invasive spinal stenosis surgery 5 years ago with a very successful outcome. I now wonder if it's a vitamin. deficiency
Two hours with neuro doctors. Symptoms as described never before encountered. Got to wonder if doctors never sit and chat about odd symptoms or if they encounter odd un-explainable symptoms if they keep it to themselves for fear they will appear somehow less knowledgeable. Strange to find so many here at this site and yet no-one has found a doctor who can diagnose this.
At least this doctor had the courtesy to say "I have no idea what this is" and booked me for a series of EEG's and MRI's.
I'm an active 59 year old male project admin doing lots of computer work (former school principal) and suffered 2nd episode of this tonight. First episode 2 months ago at work, then tonight while cooking dinner. Symptoms: sudden lethargy, weakness of arms, ache behind upper arm muscles, slight dizziness. Agree it's very debilitating and unnerving and worry what would happen if it occurred while driving. Found other posts very interesting and helpful. Magnesium defficiency was detected some years ago: tried supplement, but got diorrhea so stopped taking it. May try low dose magnesium supplement again.
I get the short weird moving spasm through left arm, immediately flowing into right arm, which I sometimes feel across my chest, sometimes not, lasting less than 30 seconds, and I also get occular migraines with a slight headache afterward. the headaches are infrequent, don't tie in with the arm weakness (or perceived weakness) and I'm 56 going through (still) menopause, whcih I've been thinking is the root cause of the arm symptoms.
aww that is why i get relief when i drop my head back and let it rest. i had wondered about this as the problem.. also i had x-rays and it shows slight compression so when I lean head in, it compresses it more.. use a hair dryer and heat up the joints and then let your head hang back. feels great and you are very strong in the arms right after doing this.
i see zigzag lights (after i turn the lights off, th elight which bounce off into my eye and roll down, also i feel this when i am sleeping and open my eye there will be a bright white spot rolling down diagonal) ( i got punched in my left eye couple of months ago by a schizo person who i ticked off who was my mom's bf, i never got it checked out) i always have weakness in my left arm like right now, and i have very weak feeling very just plain no energy very sore. what the hell is wrong with me
Update: EEG testing done and nothing found. Was hoping to experience the symptoms while hooked up to the monitor but no such luck.. Perhaps the MRI will yield more info.
Had a silent migraine yesterday (eye migraine, ocular migraine). Weird flashing, jagged pattern in one eye that lasted about an hour, then went away. No headache, nausea, etc.
I don't get headaches as a rule. Never had a migraine headache, thank god.
Reading some more, I came across the following:
Neurological symptoms - Mild weakness of the limbs, with the
hands and arms most often involved, may also
occur. In migraine, the area where the symptoms
first appear (usually the hand) clears
first, in contrast to ischemic symptoms, in
which the area initially involved usually clears
last.
Wonder if this has anything to do with the weakness in arms that I' had experienced?
