last night i began to have trouble swallowing. This morning, I could barely swallow at all, plus the pain of swallowing became greater and greater. My neck was completely stiff and sore as well. I couldn't move my neck very well and my muscles in my neck felt very tense. I so happened to be vacationing in Mexico that same weekend, where I ate a lot of fish and shrimp from local vendors. I dont know if that has anything to do with my problem.
i have the same problem. i was told by a friend of mine to keep drinking warm or hot liquids. colds just dont do the job. ive been drinking tea and its all good but he recommended warm water with a dab of salt that should be gargled in the back of the throat. hope this helps. kbye.
Our daughter has had recurrent strep throat off and on for four years. Two months ago her mood deteoriated and her bahaviour changed. I asked that the doctor do a strep test and bloodwork. Somehow, probably because I was tired they did not do the strep test. The bloodwork came back showing she had at some point had mono.
Two weeks went by and I still wasn't satisfied. We had a hurricane bearing down on us so I took her back to the doctor and demanded a strep test. It was positive. She did not have fever or a cough. They put her on amoxicillin. Three days after the hurricane she had a fever and she was worse. I took her to the ER and she was then put on zithromax.
A week later I took her back to the pediatrician and demanded another strep test and asked them to do a send-off culture as I was convinced there was something else going on. The strep test was negative but three days later her labwork on the culture came back and it was positive for MRSA staph. I took her to an ENT and they are treating her with bactrim and are going to remove her tonsils in a couple of weeks. Ask for a send off culture. DO NOT let them talk you out of it, that is what insurance is for. MRSA staph is deadly so even if you don't have insurance it is worth the money to find out what you are dealing with. If staph is present they always remove the tonsils, atleast that is what the surgeon here told me.

I am 16 and about a week ago I had a sore throat, but nothing terrible. At first I thought it was because I was singing too much but then it started to hurt when I swollowed, then I couldnt even sleep because it was the worst pain I had ever felt. Saturday I had a band competition all day and by the end of the night the pain was so bad that I came home and just cried and cried because there wasnt anything else I could do. They checked if I had strep throat and it came back negative, then they checked for mono and that came back negative. My tonsils and lymph nodes on the left side became very swollen and you could see just looking at me my left side was double the size of my right. The pain went into my jaw and then my ear. I took pain pills and they made me vomit all morning. Then I went to a different doctor and they shot some kind of antibiotics in my butt and gave me Clindamycin. Which you take 3 pills a day and I am taking advil on top of that, and the pain is slowly starting to decrease. If I still have pain in 48 hours I have to go see a throat specialist and discuss having my tonsils removed...so we will see! But it is getting better.
Go to a doctor and request that you can get amoxicillin.
its because your left tonsil is infected

Obviously no one online can be certain about your particular issue, but if you go back to the doctor, going in with a list of things you suspect will help them determine what tests to give you.
I personally think what you have sounds like tonsilitus. There are actually two forms of tonsillitis (I've been lucky enough to have both): Viral and bacterial. I can't remember which is which, but one requires an antibiotic to heal. It is similar to strep, but will not be positive on strep tests. I think it's the one you have because of the white mucus. The other kind (and the kind I am having trouble with right now) can't be treated by an antibiotic. You basically have to wait it out using various medicines (my doctors gave me sore throat lozenges, pain killers, and mucinex with anti-congestion). Some at home things that help are gurgling warm salt water (disgusting, I know... hate it), putting lime juice on the tonsils (okay, not positive about this one. It didn't help me much, but someone recommended it), and for temporary relief eat ice (or suck on it. It feels amazing, like ice cream with less substance)
Hope this stuff helps, and I hope you figure out what is wrong with you!

To everyone with these problems, think about your sexual activity, herpes causes all of these exact symptoms, not just on your genitalia, it causes frequent soar throat with the white dots
hi, my name is James and i had the same thing happen to me 2 years ago. i got tested for strep 2 times both negative. i got treated for the same thing you did and it was wrong so i went to the hospital and got tested for "mono" 3 times and the first 2 were negative but the last one was positive..the same symptoms you have is the same i had..
hey im 18 and the same thing started to happen to me 2 nights ago, i thought it was strep throat, i woke up this morning and looked down my throat to see if it was red or anything and i saw white on my tonsils and they are swollen. my right one is worse then my left one and i had a fever last night and severe chills the night before that but got rid of them but i am still very weak, and tonsils havent changed.
I'm 40 and have swollen tonsils on and off all of my life. But for longer than I can remember, my right tonsil is always swollen. I can feel it with my tongue. Sometimes it's worse than others, and occasionally I get those stones. But my right tonsil is always a constant companion, sticking out in my throat.
I asked my doctor about it last week and he said to drink water with lemon in it. I did, and my tonsil is down 75%. It is normally so swollen it is hanging loose. Now it is pretty smooth with the rest of my throat.
I push it occasionally with my tongue and I can taste a mild tonsil stone taste come out. I figure that's the last of any infection coming out.
I will be drinking lemon water from now on. These minor infections can lead to major ones, plus heart and rheumatoid problems, so I want to eliminate them if possible. This probably won't cure mono or strep or staph, but it may stop either of those from developing.

Something for everyone to think of because most people don't know this... but your tonsils are a part of your immune system... they are mostly used to "filter" the air your breath. Most people associate sore throats/tonsils with strep, mono, or another viral/bacterial infection... but this is not always the case. Because your tonsils act as a "filter" for the air, they collect pollutants, which could be carriers of any number of bacteria or viruses. These pollutants then get caught by your tonsils, which could have bacteria/virus on them and then infect your tonsils. These bacteria/viruses can lay dormant and only take effect once a year or during season changes. People who suffer from this normally have what's called Chronic Tonsillitis. Unfortunately, the only way to remedy this is to remove the tonsils... so is it worth have sore/swollen throat/tonsils every year and paying to see a doctor and getting medication or is it worth the surgery and the week or two worth of recovery?
The other type of Tonsillitis is called... Chronic Cryptic Tonsillitis... this is when the tonsils get the white tonsil stones, which house the bacteria/virus.
So if you get this about once a year or during season changes... I would highly recommend talking with your doctor about the pros and cons of having your tonsils removed... more then likely it'd be beneficial to have them removed then deal with them every year.
