I am 26 and I just had a tonsillectomy yesterday and i know my throat should be hurting pretty bad but i had NO idea that it was going to hurt this bad OMG... when i woke up from my surgery i was in unbearable amount of pain and i felt sick to my stomach and then threw up a lot of brown c**p when i shouldn't have had anything on my stomach. The pain medicine they gave me was big pills and too strong for me(they would make me sick to my stomach) and i do not want to get sick again, talk about pain... and I can't even hardly swallow water let alone big pills I even asked the doctor for liquid and he still didn't give it to me. I read that you are suppose to get a local anaesthetic and i guess that would be why people are talking about there tongue being numb. Which maybe explain why the pain was so bad when i woke up, cause i didn't get that. So, now i'm having to deal with the pain with just taking alieve. I do have to say the pain is a little better than yesterday but swallowing really hurts and so does the back of my tongue it feels like the doctor pulled the c**p out of it... and things do not taste very good, talking is also very hard. I really needed this done but I think people should know how bad the recovery is and make sure you get liquid pain medicine :'(

I am 33 and have just had a tonsilectomy. I did a little research on the net before the op which probably wasn't the best thing to do cos there are alot of hyperchondriacs out there!!! There was very little pain the first few days after the op but then it kicked in! I made sure I ate toast the first day after the op and found that dry toast helped clear some of the healing scab material at the back of the throat. I think the worse thing was the gagging feeling at the back of the throat due to the healing process (I think) but it does eventually go away, promise there is a light at the tunnel. Some advice...make sure you get pain killers that work for you as I was prescribed tramadol (zydol) which really didn't take the pain away plus it makes you feel really strange and spaced out! I didn't get any antibiotics but was given a mouth wash to gargle with which helped numb the throat pain. I took two weeks off work to recover and didn't have any sign of bleeding after the op but did have a little earache. My tongue was numb and swollen along with the uvula after the op but it eventually wears off.

Hello. I just wanted to give my results after my tonsillectomy. I just turned 22 and had them out yesterday morning. Yesterday was a breeze, but I think it was because of the anesthesia. I was eating mashed potatoes and even cut up tiny pieces of meat. Today, my throat hurts more and my tongue is a little numb/tingley. Has anyone else been experiencing this? It's not bad, but just feels like it tingles when I touch it with my teeth. The pain, to me actually isn't TOO bad. It just feels like a severe case of tonsillitis, which I've had so many times, so I don't feel like I'm dying. I've been drinking lots of water and forces myself to eat small amounts of food. So, if you just had yours done and are in a lot of pain, try drinking a lot of water out of a straw and keep up with your medicine on time. Also, I woke up in the middle of the night to make sure I take the pain meds so I don't wake up dying from pain. That helped a lot. Good luck!

actually, don't do this. I wouldn't have known either, but on my way out of the hospital the nurse told me to stay away from straws. Apparently the sucking makes it harder to heal and can make you start to bleed again.

One more thing we can't do. :(

yes please don't - the suction can start the bleeding up

plus I don't think dry toast is good - I was told it could start the bleeding

YES! I also have the bad breath and painful sores on my tounge. My tounge is huge, like a Scooby Doo tounge! I put some ambesol on it and that helps but makes drinking water nasty.

I am 43 years old. I had tonsillectomy, septoplasty & turbinate reduction surgery on 8-28-08. I had a lot of trouble the first week mainly due to the packing and splints in my nose. It's very ruff to not be able breath through your nose after having a tonsillectomy!!! I had to live on ice chips in the morning due to my throat being so dry from breathing at night.. the swelling and pain were terrible, I couldn't even swallow enough water to get any pain medication down.. WOW... Now I'm on my 2nd week, the packing/splint removed and able to breath through nose. Now.. unable to sleep due to feel like I'm choking from the drainage of dried blood etc.. from my nose (runs down my throat). I'm now having more severe pain in my throat (on and off) at times I just want to curl up and cry!! The severe stabbling pain in my ears and severe pain in my teeth is almost unbareable even after taking 2 perocets. My tongue is becoming the worse though.. the pain and swelling and unable to use properly, just yawning causes extreme pain through my ears and throat. I have a lot of pain mid way down my throat (don't understand that). I'm hoping things will start improving SOON. Please don't eat toast (I was told to stay away from hard/crunchy type foods) these will tear up the throat and can cause bleeding, no straws because the suction may cause bleeding. Drink lots of fluids (WATER)... I cannot each anything with flavor..haha Stings my throat.. although Dr. said I can start having dairy now.. ice cream is still hard to eat due to the stinging pain it causes..(esp. chocolate/strawberry) That's my story so far.. Hope this may help others to know you're not in this "boat" alone..

I am 28 and had a tonsillectomy 8 days ago. My tongue and cheek have almost healed from "OOPS" that's not the tonsil. I am still in pain and eating and drinking are very minimal! I am taking Percocets every 4 hours which help take the edge away. I was taking Vicodens that did nothing for me. When I sleep I wake up in so much pain and dry mouth. My breath still stinks and I hope this week I start feeling better. I just want to know how long others were on pain meds for? If I still feel horrible after this week should I take another week from work? Thanks for your help!

I had a tonsillectomy two weeks ago. My throat feels great, but my tongue is still sore and painful. I told me Dr. at the post-op appointment last week and he just looked at it and said it didn't seem to be a problem. I already know that they clamp it during surgery, but I feel like it should have gotten better by now. Has anyone else had pain in their tongue this long after surgery? Ouch!

OMG!!! I just had the tonsils & adenoids out 13 days ago, & experienced tongue pain, throat pain which feels like a lump when swallowing. And extreme throat/ear pain, I am 35 however. But the worst part is the horrific build up of thick mucous greenish-yellowish in the roof of my mouth behind the uvula & where the tonsils were removed. The nasty snot/mucous started coming out choking me to death. But the smell and taste was so Quote:

rancid

I couldn't eat or drink much which added to the thick mucous & pain problem!!!!! I was so miserable I was calling the Doctor every other day, & he kept saying it was "normal"???? :? So I used a Q-tip to reach back there to help the mucous get out which helped the horrible stench to go away!!! Thank God!!! But then some bleeding started because the mucous stench was protecting the scabs that started sloughing off! So now I have another problem. But it still hurts bad & feels like tons of snot in the back of my throat with a bulge under back of my tongue. Feels like mucous gets trapped back there somewhere??? SO I AM NOT SO SURE THIS WAS WORTH IT?

First and foremost I must definetly absolutley thank everyone who has ever posted about tonsillectomies. You people are genius'. I really had no idea the kind of pain I was in for, and it took me 45 minutes after leaving the hospital that an ice cream diet would not cut it due to musuc factors and how painfull it was to try and choke it up.
I keep reminding myself of what I had to go through 5 or six times a year and that this was the last bout of hell I would have to go through due to my throat.
When I read someones post on what to eat after a tonsillectomy and someone said 'mashed potatos' it was like lightning struck me. brilliant.
I've forced myself to try and continue with a normal diet, but the effort of trying to choke it down combined with the pain of swallowing (which feels like shards of glass if I havent chewed a mouthfull to maximum puree form) gets a little much, and eventually I just give up out of disgust.
I look at this as a great opportunity to lose that ten pounds I've been meaning to, hahaha.

My only concern from this point is that my tounge seems to have a white film on it (reminding me of scary pictures of halitoses I saw as a child) its kind of mucus resembling, but its like I've had a really hot drink and didnt spit it out fast enough so all my taste buds are burnt.
I'm on the normal pain killers, biaxin, celebrex and t3's, is this a reaction to the medication or the procedure, and therefor completely normal.
I have to wait three more days untill I see the doc for a checkup, but I would love to know now.

Yes i am having tounge pains too. But for some reason it feels like I burnt it with like hot coffee. But i haven't ate anything hot in temperature or spice wise. What could this be?

I am 10 days post op and I have the same feeling with my tongue not to mention my tongue is still a shade of white. I saw my doctor sooner than my scheduled post op visit and he said I did not have thrush and my tongue will be fine. The Fluora is off balance from the surgery. Whatever that means. I'm not sure if I buy it! I still think it is from the trauma of the lamp they used on it. I just hope it goes away. It is very annoying. Exactly like I burned my tongue on hot coffee or tea. It is an aweful feeling.

i had my tonsils out last tuesday and was almost pain free until 3 days later when i had an allergic reaction to the lortad liquid in which my tongue swelled up and lit up every pain receptor on my tonge. it was terrible pain and actually when my wife called the doctor to ask what she could do to help the tongue pain the told her to increase to dose of loritab. that cause even more severe swelling and pain. luckily i figured out that i was having a reaction and the next day i stopped the lortab liquid and my tongue swelling subsided a bit and i called the doctor and asked what i could do about the swelling and he agreed that i was having a reaction an he told me to take a couple benadryl. within an hour the swelling was near gone and the tongue pain gone as well. the weird thing is i switched to 1 vicoden tablet which is very similar to lortab liquid except it isnt a liquid and the vicoden took away all the pain from the area where the tonsils were taken out. i am talking my tongue pain was so severe that i couldnt feel any throat pain. i described it to my wife as someone pulling out my tongue with pliers and laying it over an anvil..lighting it on fire and then pounding it with a baseball bat. that is no exaggeration either. have not had any abnormal pain at all since i stopped taking lortab liquid!

I had my tonsils removed 6 days ago..kept waiting to get better..but no such luck..went to doc today and learned I have a raging yeast infection in my throat. maybe in three more days things will be better.
best advice..ice packs directly around entire throat..numbs things quickly, and quiets the pain for awhile.
Drink tons of water..will help with the scabs..they dissolve rather than dangle..it is worth the pain to swallow the water!
gaterade helps give energy
applesauce, mashed sweet potatoes, buttered small pasta, custard..easiest to swallow..also fried egg..cut into tiny pieces..takes about 30 minutes to eat..but good to get something with protein in you. I bought some protein shakes..have not tried them yet. keep drinking water when trying to eat, helps wash things down
Tongue, teeth, jaw and ear pain all very normal. My tongue was very swollen, but is better now. I was hoping to be better in 6 days..but think this will take some more time..try to relax, enjoy the weight loss, think positive, how much better we will be when this is all over, and how much more we will all enjoy eating as soon as we can do it without pain :-) Watch some good movies..a distraction is very helpful. Hang in there!
