I had my tonsils out a week ago today. i'd never had tonsillitis or anything, but my tonsils were the size of walnuts. they always had been and nobody ever told me that was strange, so once my dentist mentioned it i saw a doctor about it and he had concerns about apnea and cancer because of the size.

i had some pretty bad pain, but the liquid painkillers helped keep it under control. got sick the day of surgery after a few hours, which i figure was just from the anesthesia. i used a flashlight to look at the back of my throat, which was sick...but interesting to see a totally different throat.

i had to quit the liquid pain meds because my stomach started to reject it and it was making me throw up about an hour after i took it, so now i'm on Advil every 5 hours, which works great...just hard to swallow sometimes. last night and this morning i had the worst pain, which i think was from the scabs starting to fall off. felt like razor blades, but as long as i didn't move my throat the pain was less. so after taking the pills i just sat still for about 15 minutes until they kicked in.

a few days ago i noticed my tongue had a strange whiteness about it, which i may have been there longer, but because of drinking red fluids i may not have noticed. I found some stuff about Thrush and managed to scrape some of it off with my toothbrush. I found a test online that you can perform with a glass of water right after you wake up. Apparently you fill a glass with water, and spit into it before putting anything in your mouth after you wake. then wait 15 to 30 minutes and look in the side of the glass. if the spit has gone away, then it's normal, but if it has "strings" or specs or cloudyness floating in the water then yeast is present. same place told me that the antibiotics kill the good bacteria that's in your mouth, which can cause yeast buildup and yesterday was my last antibiotic dose. i bought some yogurt, since i figured it'd be a good thing to eat and since it'd help kill yeast if i had it. if it stays white, i'll contact the doctor, but i don't have another appointment until after new years. luckily my mom's friend is a nurse, so i can ask her questions and already have an idea of whats going on before seeing the doctor

i also have bumps on the back of my tongue that burn when things go past it...not sure what these are.

has anyone else eaten food and then noticed that it's jammed in the back of your throat? yesterday i ate Lipton chicken noodle soup, which i thought would be good cause the noodles are small and easy to swallow. then after eating i went to the bathroom to check out my scabs progression and saw that a large mass of noodles was at the back of my throat over where my tonsil used to be. water and gargling would let it loose, so i had to poke it a little until i could see the scabs again. Same thing happened today when i had scrambled eggs. So are these masses of food temporary or will i constantly have a pit back there?

I had my surgery last thursday and it has taken me about seven days in order to feel like myself again. i am currently taking both liquid and regular pill pain medication. i have to tell you though that my neck swelled up and i have an awful ear ach but they tell me this is normal. i cant sleep well because of the amount of flem in my mouth and throat. and i spend half my time trying to spit out the flem or brushing my teeth or the ever popular sleeping. the pain has decreased a little but it is still there but my breath is really bad and no matter what i do it still smells. oh and my doctor and a few other nurses told me never to take advil, alieve, or any form of ibuprofen it will cause you to bleed and you will have to go to the ER which im not to fond of. i also honestly thought i would be over it by know because i have had other worse surgeries that were very painful, plus i fall a lot i have no grace to speak of, and with all these things i have developed a high pain tolerance. but this makes me look very much like im dieing

I thought these posts were very helpful. The very first 3 days after the surgery I was fine I couldn't really drink but I forced myself to so I don't get dehydrated. I ate a ton of popsicles which helped numb the pain.
After day 3 everything just went down hill and I was in a lot of pain I couldn't eat anything but jello and boiled egg white. even though I wasn't eating I was still going to the bathroom but it was liquid like and green and smelt. I couldn't stand any kind of noise and day 7 I went to urgent care and it turned out I had an ear infection so I was put on stronger meds. My throat would burn really bad when i woke up so It also helps to have a humidifier while your sleeping to keep the air moist and that way when you wake up your throat isn't as dry.

My tongue started to get white and it was numb and hurt pretty bad I tried to scrape it off but it hurt really bad so I just let it be. By day 7 it started to call off if I just swished water in my mouth and spat it out a lot of it started to call off and it hurts when it calls off but its better then having the white stuff on there because it smells awful!

I hope this helped

i had my tonsils out 6 days ago and i also had a lip lesion taken off. i am 16 years old and wondering if anyone knows how long till i will be able to eat normally again, even a guess would be nice. my tongue also is really sore especially towards the back. any ideas when that'll stop? i've been drinking 8 glasses of water or more a day but i haven't been able to eat anything yet and so far i've lost 6 pounds. i know that i should be eating but im afraid to eat because i tried potatoes and they got stuck in the back of my throat. this has been pretty rough and i need to get back to school and if anyone has any ideas on when the pain will subside and i'll be able to eat normally i'd greatly appreciate the advice. i have also been in a state of depression that wont seem to go away. its gotten worse and worse since the day of my surgery and any ideas on how to lessen the depression would be helpful. thanks. xoxo~depressed

Ok so listen anyone that looks at this post and has issues with alot of pain in the back of their throat after tonsillectomy and pain in their tongue. Go see a regular doctor, not an ear nose throat doctor. I went to see my doctor and guess what, he prescribed me a stronger antibiotic than amoxicillin and also gave me a numbing syrup to gargle to help numb it and gave me percocet 10mg and its been a lot better than the amoxicillin and vicodin. Tell your doctor of this post and trust me if they do this and you feel a lot better afterwards it was worth it.

i had my tonsils removed a week ago and right after the surgery my tongue was really swollen and felt bruised and my teeth were really sensitive. i wasn't in too much pain for the first two days, but the third day was the worst and the pain stayed about the same after that. i've been taking vicodin for the pain and it hasn't been helping too much. my tongue was also covered in icky white stuff but i have a tongue scraper on the back of my toothbrush so i used that to get most of it off.
i'm hoping to get better soon, the scabs have not fallen off yet though, and i'm scared they'll fall off at school because my mom is making me go back in two days. i find that if you overcook ramen a bit and just let it sit for a little while, it's not too hard to eat.

Augh the tongue pain!!!! I had my tonsils out on 1/31/09, and I think it's 9 days later... but my tongue is so swollen, and I find myself "pressing" my tongue to the roof of my mouth, especially at night. I have to remind myself not to.

The back hurts extremely, and there is the white stuff. I tried to brush it off, it did come off - but it hurts even more now.
My boyfriend says the white stuff comes from being dehydrated, which I could believe. I ended up in the ER 2 days ago from bleeding and dehydration.
But, someone on here said the white stuff is from the liquid antibiotic, which i'm on. (Amoxicillin)

I'm in extreme, extreme pain. I have a high tolerance for pain, and a high tolerance for pain killers. I broke my back when I was 16, and deal with two herniated discs, and have a painful lung disease. I take perkaset on a daily basis due to it.
The doctor gave me the same dosage of perk that i'm used to, in liquid form, the 5/325. Then when I expressed my concerns, he gave me the 7/325 along with the liquid.
It still was awful. They then gave me demerol, which did absolutely nothing. Seriously.
After the ER incident, they gave me 10/325, which is helping a bit... I can actually swallow without those "pain shudders," as I call them.

I have a four year old daughter who just had a tonsillectomy and she is having a horrible time. She got hit with a flu virus the day after surgery, with high fevers for three days...she she got off to a really rocky start to recovery. She refuses to eat. It's hard to get her to eat her favorite---ice cream!

I noticed yesterday horrible thick white stuff on her tongue that wipes away. I didn't know if that was normal or not. After reading this post it seems normal, though not comfortable. Any tips for trying to get her to eat more or make her more comfortable. I have no idea what it feels like.

Hi I am Michelle I am 19 and just had my tonsils out on the 18th and it is very painful the first 3 days are the worst and I couldnt swallow anything my pain medication was a struggle to take. My doctor had actually told me not to eat ice cream three to five days after surgery because it can cause mucous and thats something you dont want. The best thing that helped me was applesauce and jello were the two easiest things for me to eat. The white stuff on the tongue is normal. Hope she feels better

I HATE to say this but get ready. i had mine out on the 23rd and did fine till the 26th. All hell broke loose. i thought oh this isn't that bad until a few days later. im 6 days post op and still have extreme pain. i went to e.r at 3am and thry gave me steroids for script and more lortab 7.5. Im so swollen and hurt in ears jaw and toungue. Doc said there's nothing wrong with those things its the nerve from the tonsils running throught those areas making it seem like they're injured. im running out of pain pills early because i take 2 tabs in morning 1 evey 4 hrs then 2 at bedtime and that keeps me ahead of the pain. I recomment Luigi's shaved ice strawberry (lemon may sting) and those philly swirl cups of sherbet. As far as water goes i went 2 days with no fluids at all and the rest of days plenty of fluids and i couldn't tell any difference in pain. I hurt like hell no matter what. I call my surgery the TonsHELLectomy. Ive felt almost suicidal once or twice from the never and pain. This is rediculus-i had no clue it would be this painful. I don't even feel like im improving it seems it gets worse geeeezzz. I haven't slept for more than 2 hours straight since Mon. Im starving. I hate watching everyone eat their normal meat and patatoe meals, pastas, salads etc. When this is all said and done im going to a freakin buffet or steackhouse-my stomach has probably shrunk to the size of a quarter. Oh and I havnt had BMovement in 7 days. Guess that will be my next feat (od on exlax i guess) Ok i rambling-i needed to vent to others who understand:) Big Hugs to everyone going thru this hell-WE ARE GONNA MAKE IT DARN IT!!!!!!

I'm a 29 yo female and had to undergo this nightmare on Mon. Feb. 23. My sugery was done out an outpatient surgery center so they herd me in and out pretty quick.830am - 1130am. I awoke with some mild discomfort and they immediately administered morphine. Got done with the pharmacy and settled in by 1pm and still felt only felt like i had a case of strep coming on no big deal. I thought to myself Geez this isn't going to be so bad. Docs made out like its very minor thought they were right. I was prescribed amoxiccillin and dilaubidd which i stayed on throughout the night every 4 hours. Once I took my first nap around 7 or 8pm and only slept for 45 min. I woke with more intense pain cuz mouth got dry. I constantly snacked on ice (picked up bag from Sonic) very small pieces and covered it with water and spooned it out. All n ight throughout the next day i did this same routine. Still kept waking up after 45 min. or so. Then came day 3......OMG!!!!Upon awakening around 5 am i experienced hell, torture, extremeeeee pain.It was strep throat x's 5. Tongue, ear, jaw pain now. My uvula was all the way down my throat and the darn thing was swollen as wide as my pinky finger-not to mention the white 3rd degree burns covering the entire back of my throat. I was in tears trying to do my ice cup thing so i could take meds. Throught the day I had my husband call my ent becuz dilaubidds did nothing. I had to wait throughout the night to get new script. 8am and we were on two wheels to the pharmacy where i picked up Lortab 7.5 tablets. I took 2 of the darn things i didn't care i had to get a big jump on the pain. It worked. Stll in extreme pain it at least took the edge off. Ate some cream of wheat mixed with honey and brown sugar,Luigi's shaved ice (strawberry and watermelon flavor),cheesecake jello pudding. Next 2 days same routine 2 tabs in morning 1 every 4 and 2 tabs at night (still only sleeping 2hrs. at a time) Day 5 ran out of meds ended up in ER Pain out of this world. I think i was debating suicide at one point >:( sent me home with Steroid pills and another script.Ha Ha er doc didnt know i had another refill on my others just couldnt get them till one more day. Hey i'm stocking up!!!You do not want to run out. Day 6(today) tried soft scrambled eggs with melted american cheese on top to me em' slickey Jello and pudding Taco bell Beans and cheese is great too. my new issue is the scabs arount my uvula are starting to sting. Like canker sores. When I drink it feels like tiny splinters and razors scratching around ouch!!! I got the chloraseptic out and it works great!!!!!!! Just spray on the stingy areas and it numbs it up so you can have your morning drink and meds and as needed throughout. I do it before i eat drink or take meds. Another thing-Steroids get those. Lie if need be call your doc and have him call some in . You don't realize how the slightest swelling increases pain. As soon as the swelling went down pain decreased about 30 % with it. I don't understand why the docs don't prescribe thsese automatically for everyone.Keep that in mind-ice isn't enough against this insane torture. Im glad i came across these message boards-they speak the truth everyone made out like this was going to be a 4-5 day cakewalk. I had to request another week off-they should have been straight up. Whats their problem i swear docs can be twisted. Oh well i'll give an updat on day 8 or so. Hope i was of some help to some other tonsillectomy victim. Hang in there big hugs to everyone out there still healing. Just remember this too shall pass, and think god this is a one time procedure (i don't think they'll grow back). When you feel like crying do it let it all out one good time it helps. Anyone have advize on the constipation and nightmares?????? Hang in there we'll make it!!!!
