Hi there,

i also had a tonsillectomy now 7 days ago and it stills hurts a lot, in spite of all the drinking and stuff...

The back of my tongue also hurts and it might be because your tonsills ae attached to your tongue (well...actually you have three kind of tinsills: nose, throat and tongue) so maybe they took your tongue-tonsills as well or it just hurts where the throat-tonsills were attached...

anyway, i'm back to my ice-water and ready to take some pain-killers...

I'm on day 8 post op and I thought the previous pain was bad but no it just keep on coming...worse and worse. i am in total agony and to make matters worse my pain killer doesn't help anymore. I'm going in to the doctor today to request a stronger pain killer. My appointment isn't for about 12 hours and I have two oxycodone left. I normally have a high pain tollerence but this is the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. I've also had to call work and request more time off. I think I have 4 more holiday days. I just want to get better so I can get back to my life...oh ya did I mention I broke up with my boyfriend of 4 years yesterday? So I'm a physical and emotional wreck. Crying makes it hurt worse so I'm trying to hold off on that.

hi, im 17 and just had my tonsils out 2 weeks ago. im just starting to be able to talk again and eat, which is great. anyways besides the pain medicine which helped tremendously for awhile i also found that slushies from sonic helped a lot! it cools your throat and instead of just having the ice packs on your throat this way the ice is IN your throat.

Hello! I think the big difference I have noticed here is ages, the older you are the worst off your going to be for pain! Just wanted to give a quick run through on what I have learned since monday when I got my tonsils out, they were 'cut out' thats all I asked and didn't want to scare myself off the operating table by asking more questions before I was off to la la land. Its day 5 and a run through of the days so far goes like this.

day 1. waking up from surgery I almost laughed at how scared I was. sore throat. felt like I needed to cough but couldnt. went home with some liquid morphine. double dosed for hours just in case, ate a hamburger (took me about an hour) and went to bed wondering if it was that big of a deal.

day 2. woke up at about 4 am almost screaming. chugged some morphine. drank enough ice water to freeze my brain. and curled up on the couch to die. slept about an hour that night.. more like passed out from the pain. I ate half a bowl of soup this day, but drank about 8 litres of water.

day 3. todays menu was another 8 liters of water, an apple sauce and some more chicken soup broth. halfway through day 3 I discovered ice packs. I wouldnt trade them for a chunk of gold. woke up that night with a 102 fever and refused to go to the hospital. fever broke around 3 am.

day 4. almost as bad at day 2. as soon as I would take the ice pack off my throat I would feel like nails were being shoved down my throat. started washing my mouth out with a numbing anti bacterial sort of mouth wash called apo benzydamine. I had tried this on day two and it had burned so much I had almost swolled it. slept really well, kept the ice pack on my face and a cold fan in my face all night.

day 5 (today) the worst pain I would say is that my jaw is swollen and tender, my ears feel like they are going to pop, and my tounge is a little swollen. I have this weird mucus which means my throat is rebuilding (yay)

if you have suffered through reading this, my ADVICE if you are going into this..

1. On the first day if you feel well enough to choke down a hamburger or spaghetti or a pizza. do it. its the last food you will eat for days (unless your one of those lucky ones)

2. drink water till you bust. then drink more.

3. ice packs. get some. get alot. put them on your neck, face jaw. then give it a good 20 minute rest.. if you keep them on to long they seem to loose the effect. (maybe its a mind thing?)

4. get some of that burny mouthwash. it sucks on days 1-3. but after it makes your throat numb and tingly (a wonderful feeling!)

5. it gets better. alot better. it gets deathly worse from what i have read after the first couple days. but then it just slowly gets better.

6. dont bother double dosing your meds. just take them 20 minutes before. apparently this is how I came to give myself a fever...

7. ice cream is not good for you. it makes more bacteria and this weird plegm build up.

oh and im 22, female, and not very good with pain.. but today is bearable. so the future is looking up!

Well Im 53 and had my tonsills out a week ago. Due to low B P had to stay in for most of the day only left as could not of got any sleep in Hospital. Thought not that bad when I ate a bowl of chicken soup and bread and ice cream whilst in hospital. Next day was throwing up had a high temperature and just kept chucking up, could of gone back to hospital but would have sat in A and E for hours. Got liquid pain killers and antibiotics that helped. Last night woke up feeling like my throat had been cut, was told that it gets worse before it gets better..........Did have KFC one night as was told the scratchier/roughier the better and it did help. Just would like to say hopefully this will be the last op I ever choose to have. I am glad its behind me.

This is day six for me and I am still in pain. When I swallow water goes up my nose. I took zophran sp? to deal with the naseau. My tongue does not hurt as bad now but the throat is the worst it has been. During the day I fell good, but the late night and early in the morning are tough. When will it end??

Today is Day 5 post-op. I am 34 yr old male. I expected the throat pain to be bad and it has been, but the part that is really driving me crazy is the swollen uvulva and the numb and swollen tongue. I didn't know much about what to expect outside of my throat hurting tremendously when i swallowed. Dr's don't tell you about how your taste buds won't be there and how swollen your tongue and uvulva will be. The little part of the throat in the back middle that hangs down actually just sits on your tongue, that gives you a horrible gagging feeling.

I quit my liquid pain meds after 2 days because i didn't like the way they made me feel, just out of it mentally. Since day 2 i have been using liquid tylenol and that has helped alot. I am still in a tremendous amount of pain when i swallow, i expected this to get much better by now but it hasn't. I also am concerned that my taste buds are gone, my tongue feels as if i have burnt it very badly on food. I hope this swelling goes away soon and my taste buds return. The other pain i have noticed is my ears popping and throbbing, i have not had ear pain ever in the past.

I have found by far the best thing for me(besides drinking water) is thick milkshakes. I have heard others say not to eat ice cream because of the phlegm, but i have had zero problems with this being an issue. I have had 4 bowls of ice cream today.....my own version of a shake, just scoop some ice cream into the bowl and pop in microwave for 30 seconds, then stir a little and that is a nice, easy shake....i have found this is perfect consistency over regular ice cream or just milk.

I hope this helps, please let me know.

First I have to say I love this blog. Even though we are mostly Guests on here it is like I know all these people!
I am a 44 year old female in exceptional health for my age. Very high pain threshold (2 c-sections, one at age 40, with no pain killers afterwords).

Thought this was going to be difficult but ok. WRONG! This has been by far the most unbelievably painful experience I could imagine. I couldn't have made this up in a nightmare.

I am at the end of Day 8. Days 1 - 3 were tough but nothing prepared me for the days afterwards. Ears really do hurt - like a never-ending hideous earache. That is because the Eustachian tubes in your ears are affected by the inflammation in your throat and have too much pressure they cannot release.
The tonsillectomy is done at 400 degrees (I hadn't known that) and your uvulva and tongue are casualities of the surgery.
My Dr only gives Lortab (liquid Vicodin). They say that a few folks in the past have purposefully od'd on the percocet or oxycodone as the pain became unbearable.
Go see someone if you can't handle it! I have thought there were moments when I would lose my mind from the pain. But you won't - so be careful with your meds.

Also - after Day 3 the cold stuff SUCKS! It will sting and burn like frostbite. Stick with lukewarm things. No toast (like some guy said) or fried chicken.
Mashed pototoes, oatmeal, scrambled eggs all were fine. And dairy was fine. It does make it a little phlegmy but that keeps my throat moist.

Anyway - good luck to all. I have read 100's of posts on different sites up until today and not posted. This is the one site I could relate to so much that I laughed until I cried. We will all be fine....but gosh this is a primitive surgery!!!
100 years from now they will look back at this procedure and how barbaric it is!!! :-D

Yo, I am 28, and have been dreading this surgery since my teens, for good reason. I am only on day 2 and looks like there is hell to come. Thank goodness I have a high pain threshold. I have the liquid pain meds, not a really big fan of them. One thing that is nice for me, as I am a single homeowner, I am staying the first few days at my folks house. It is nice having them around, morale support I guess.

yeah, I am on Day 7 and my tongue hurts badly too, but not as badly as it used to.

Here are some tips:
-try sucking on ice cubes because it will keep the swelling down
-try Cepacol lozenges. They are anaesthetic and you can get them in any pharmacy, I would put them in my mouth and hold them to the cut parts and numb it. Stayed numb for a while. highly recommended!

This sounds weird but I realized it was because my tongue had swollen so much that the edge of my tongue made the same pattern as the back of my teeth, and my molars were cutting it because the tongue was too big!

Anyways, try the ice and lozenges and you'll be ok! And STAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING ACIDIC. I didn't think strawberries were that acidic-- they are, warning!

Hi indigo, thanks for these tips. Where does it hurt on your tongue. Overall? In the back? In the front? Where can you find the cepacol lozenges? Are they over the counter or are they something you have to get a prescription for? Thanks for letting me know in advance. :)

I am a 13 year old female and I got my tonsils out on Monday morning. It is now Late Wed. night. I read in another topic to not eat toast because it scratches the scab and causes bleeding problems later on. I freak out very easily. If I started bleeding I don't know how bad I would freak out and make it worse.
I've had a couple panic attacks with the phlem in my throat after eating things like pudding or yogurt, as I couldn't breathe but I had a sheet that told me I couldn't cough (to clear it up). Anyways, what do you do if it starts bleeding? The throat specialist I had is not available until next week so I wouldn't be able to call. Call the hospital? 911? I ws told days 5-11 were the worst for bleeding?
But this is about the tongue. I've started eating things like toast (which I will apparently discontinue now) and rice today, but I had a VERY hard time chewing because of my tongue. I assumed the cuts were from the instrument used to hold down the tongue during surgery. I have a scratch (looks accidental) along the top of my tongue, and two cuts parallel to each other underneath on both sides which have some white/grey scabbing on them. :(
I know this is the wrong forum to ask these qustions, but any suggestions on the phlem, swollen uvula, cut tongue, or bleeding, and when should the scab come off?

Hi,

I am now on day 13 post-tonsillectomy and so I'm done with the tongue pain, there is a light at the end of the (very dark) tunnel!

My tongue hurt all along the edge of it from days 2-3, like anywhere where my teeth could bump it, in addition there was a big gash on the top of my tongue to one side, looked like a scratch.

But as time went on, the pain went away and I noticed it was mainly the tongue part near my molars that hurt, I think it was scratching up on them.

The cepacol are over the counter, and a big plus is that they don't taste bad! I had honey lemon, and considering how much nasty tasting medicine I was having, the cepacol was a relief. Couldn't have made it without them!

Hope that helps...!
