my breath smells really bad too and my teeth are soo sore but going to see a dentist next week if im well enough to go get my teeth and breath sorted well im starting to feel a little better now still unable to eat much and feel weak still and ive lost a whole stone in weight in just over a week my moms not happy shes shouting at me to eat haha

I had mine removed yesterday. It seems as though the pain gets progressively worst each hour. My tongue is in major pain. It feels like its swollen. Its sore and irritable. My throat hurts to swallow. I always have to spit. Help. I expected the sore throat but not my tongue.
Okay, so I had my tonsils taken out 11 days ago. I don't feel any pain where my tonsils used to be, just excrutiating pain on the very back (left side) of my tongue. I can barely eat, talk or swallow it hurts so bad. It's just depressing because I feel good otherwise and the tongue pain just ruins everything. If anyone has any information as to why my tongue hurts so bad, please share. It'd be greatly appreciated.
Hi indigosound, I found some lozenges like you were talking about. Thanks again for posting on that, it was very helpful. How are you doing now? I'd like to hear if you've got any updates. Thanks!
I'm in the same boat. Day 11, and there's this really scratchy feeling on the back of my tongue that hurts like hell on the left side. And no matter how much water I seem to drink, it doesn't saturate that scab enough. Mine tastes spicy too... I dunno why. So far I've found warm liquids (hot cocoa, tea, soup, some extra soupy annie's mac and cheese with the pasta cooked very soft) seem to calm it down a bit, while cold things like ice cream and pudding irritate it. Jello's still okay though. I've even switched to room temp water instead of ice water because it bothers me so much. And I've been weaning myself off the meds, so it been a very frustrating set back since I feel great otherwise....
I had my check up with my surgeon yesterday and asked her about it and she said it was a scab on my tongue. I guess my tonsils were so large at the time of surgery that they were pushed up against the tongue muscle and they nicked it a little bit with the laser. She said that if it doesn't fall off in a week to come back in and she'll see if she can snag it. But just to be sure you might want to schedule a consult with your surgeon if you don't have one already.

I'm a 16 year old girl and i had my tonsils removed 8/19/09. This is now around day 6 of post op. When i woke up from surgery my throat felt like I had strep throat. It got better after the doctors gave me something to get rid of the pain. The first few days were horrible. The doctor never told me that my tongue would hurt about as bad as my throat or that i would get ear aches. They also didn't warn me that my tongue and uvula would swell. I was able to survive off jello for a little bit. It was easier to swallow. I also tried pudding which was to thick for me to swallow. I've been drinking about 8 bottles of room temp water a day which has really helped. Anything too cold felt like a fire in my throat. The warm drinks like coffee and room temp water soothed it and hurt less going down. A lot of the scabbing is gone now. My doctor told me that the more hydrated the easier the everything healed. I'm able to eat Applesauce, jello, waffles and french toast that i buttered and put in the microwave to soften them, scrambled eggs, ramen noodles and soup. The pain from my throat is going away i only need to take my pain meds when i first wake up and when I'm going to sleep. I'm also have the white tongue problem. I noticed that when that scabs started falling off there was a little blood but it wasn't any bleeding. I hope this was helpful to anyone who has had the surgery or is going to. Best of luck!
Congrats to you! It is so hard to recover from tonsilitis sometimes so I'm always happy to hear when people have a good normal recovery! How are you feeling now? Are you fully recovered yet? I'd like to hear how you're doing if you're still around. THanks!
I must've ended up on the lucky side because the only amount of "severe" pain I had was the day of surgery. I had it on 9/8/09, and today is 9/14/09. I can talk almost normally, my tongue and uvula are still a little swollen, drinking and eating are really no problem, sleeping is no problem. I'm not taking any painkillers. Haven't been nauseous or had diarrhea or anything. My scabs haven't fallen off yet so we'll see about that, but other than that, it just felt like I went through another bout of tonsillitis and lost about 7 pounds or so.
I had a Tonsillectomy, posterior anterior terbanite reduction and a septoplasty on 8/13/09. The day of the surgery I felt fine just groggy and still had some left over feeling from the anesthesia so the pain wasn't so bad. The first 6 day's I thought "well this is not so bad." Boy oh boy was I wrong. About day 9 it just got so bad I had to hype my self up to swallow my liquid Roxicet. And cold foods and liquids started burning. I switched over to hot water witch seemed to make it easier to swallow water. Well here it is 6 weeks after my surgery and my throat is normal but my nose is driving my crazy. I smell a putrid smell all day long. I thought it was just me so I asked my wife to see if she could smell it, she got with in 6 inches from my face and could. It turned her stomach and she gagged. I have a appt. with my doctor to find out what is going on. I will let you know, I think its some sort of sinus infection, I have been flushing it out with nasal saline solution and the stuff coming out is smelly........
Hey , I'm a 21 year old female, just had my tonsils out 09/22/09. Alongside the tonsillectomy, I'm also quitting smoking, figured it'd be the last thing on my mind for a few days so no better time then now. Here's my breakdown:
Day 1) Surgery went by faster then I thought it would, seemed fairly routine, no bad experiences. Waited in recovery for about 4 hours, feeling a little groggy, but only at mild sore throat status. Was even able to talk and have coherent conversations with my mom and the nurses. Ate some ice chips, chugged some water, all the while on morphine and perccocet. Got a script for some T3's with Codeine and went home....
Now this is where the first bout of hell breaks loose, apparently I have issues with Codeine, who knew? So about 15 minutes after being home I throw up. Despite the pain medication, stomach acid and open cauterized wounds = OMG pain. Now this happened on and off every time I even attempted to eat/drink for the remainder of the day, so I took some Gravol to get some sleep, and set an alarm for every four hours to take my meds/down some water.
Day 2) Same thing, every time I ate I threw up. This was hell, and in turn made my wounds raw and more uncomfortable then they should have been at this point. I was constantly dizzy, and just felt entirely off. Almost like I had a migraine but with no headache, just the dizzy, nausea, sensitivity to lights etc etc symptoms. After throwing up about 5 times, decided to go back on Gravol, and sleep away my day. Set my alarm for every 4 hours to make sure I wouldn't miss my meds, and tried to drink as much as I could without throwing up.
Day 3) This was one of my worst days. Woke at 4-am and not able to sleep from the pain, still throwing up constantly. Felt incredibly frail and decided to weigh myself to make sure I wasn't losing unhealthy amounts of weight. My weight usually fluctuates a few lbs or so, but my scale that morning told me 8 lb., which I'm not a big girl, only about 115 lb, so that's a lot. Concerned, and finally fed up with throwing up EVERYTHING (at first thought it was just a reaction to the anesthesia, however that should be well worn off by now), called my surgeon's office crying. Oh what's that, he's not in today, AWESOME, receptionist tells me it's most likely the meds and they'll have a new script for me by 12 noon the next day.... So I stop taking my T3's for the rest of the day, and switched to Advil liquid gels, which basically does nothing and the nausea still persists.
Day 4) A good day. Woke in crazy pain, seeing as I was only taking a mild over the counter pain med, however once I got my new script and let the meds take effect I felt way better. The pills are called Tramacet, and basically were described to me as T3's sans Codeine, and they're a lot easier on my stomach. FINALLY was able to get some food in me, well if you classify popsicles and freezies food. Regardless I didn't throw up and I was ecstatic. Happy, and feeling as if the worst was over, was able to relax, watch some movies and get in some good naps. (P.s. anyone else notice some REALLY messed up dreams whilst on these medications?)
Day 5) Drink water, chew ice, take meds, repeat. Nothing exciting today, other then my first BM since surgery, Woohoo?!? lol. Also first day since surgery I've seen a cigarette on tv/in a movie where I want one... come on will power!
Day 6) So Day 4, when I was all "the worst is over" blah blah blah, yeah no, I was wrong, WAY wrong. Woke up, would have screamed in pain if I could have. The sides and back of my tongue, as well as jaw through ear, were experiencing sharp shooting pain unlike any I've ever felt. I tried more meds, less meds, different meds, cold shower, hot bath, ice pack, you name it. Nothing worked. Unsure why I'm feeling this pain, but I turned to google and the consensus is I'm not dying, these can be side effects of the tonsillectomy. Eventually just slept most of it off, well the worst of it at least.
Day 7) So today is day 7, it's about 11am now and I'm sitting here on my macbook blogging away my little experience. This morning seems pretty uneventful. More eff'ed up dreams (one where I was one of those ladies who has a baby, but doesn't know she's pregnant until the baby pops out in the toilet type thing, lol. Yeah as I said, MESSED UP). Pain so far is still present in my ears tongue and jaw, however it's only mild as of right now. Part of one of my scabs is missing, so swallowing stings like heck, but otherwise today has started off pretty uneventful. Noticing the not smoking more as well today, hopefully a sign I'm getting better. Still holding strong and determined not to start up again! Let's hope it stays that way. Keep you posted! :-D

Hi guys, I am a 41 year old female in Australia. I had my tonsils out the 22nd of sep 09.
The day I woke up from surgery I vomited but was fine after getting the blood I had swallowed during surgery up.
My throat felt like someone had burnt it (which is exactly what they did). It was about a level 12 on their pain scale of 1-10.
They were giving me tramadol through a stint and giving me liquid panadol (paracetamol).
The next day I was told to eat the toast and cereal which was brought to me for breakfast. I managed to eat it tho it took me about an hour or more to finish. The dr came around and said I could go home. I asked what I should be eating as I had read different things. I was told to eat Everything. I asked about the milk causing mucous and being bad as I had read this and he said no it's fine eat whatever you want but I don't want you eating just jelly and ice cream.
The next day it hurt and was probably on a pain scale of 7 again the liquid panadol was excellent at relieving the pain. They sent me home with tramadol and oxynorm which just made me sleepy and feel kinda ditzy.
Thursday afternoon my fiancé had to fly back home (we had travelled 7 hours for the op)he was. Poked to come back Friday night.
Well about 5am I woke up with a fresh clot and blood was running down the back of my neck. I woke my soon to be parent inlaws.
Who eventually took me to the emergency ward where the op was done.
The bleeding had stopped by now but the ENT people wanted to keep me overnight to keep an eye on me. So I sat around in emergency and other areas till they finally got me a bed in a ward. The dr came around 5.30pm to see me in the ward and said I was fine and could eat. He had been gone about 10 minutes (I had not managed to open any food they had dug up yet) when I started Bleeding. This was a serious bleed and I was losing lots of Blood. The surgeon was called and when he saw what was happening he went into emergency mode. I was in theatre about 10 minutes later and was nearly given blood transfusion.
When I woke up I was placed back in the ward. I felt like a truck had hit me or a few sumo wrestlers had jumped me.
The dr came next morning and tried to explain that that only 1 in every 100 or 3% of people ever have a bleed after the op and they had stuffed padding over the breakthrough and stiched it over and I had lost a lot of blood but my body would remake it but I would feel lethargic and stuff for a few days. I stayed 1 more night and got to go home Sunday. Unfortuneately I was home a few hours and had a minor bleed but went to emergency anyway as the ENT dr had told me to. When I finally saw someone they had to keep me in over night AGAIN and so had to take blood again and put a stint in. The problem was because I had two ops already and blood tests the day before the first op they couldn't find a vein that would give them blood. They tried 4 different veins needless to say I was very bruised anyplace there were veins in my arm.
Anyway the ENT dr finally got to me and sprayed a foul tasting stuff in the back of myneck did some fiddling with something and told me to stay very stll at which time he stuck a hot stick in my mouth and burnt an area near where they had extracted my tonsil. I got to stay another 2 nights. My pain was about a 6 tho where be burnt me was about a 9.
I got to go home and today I travled the 7 hours home ( my fiancé drove).
Most the pain in my throat isnow gone but I have this pain at the very back of my tongue which is excruciating at times and my tongue kind of suddenly feels like I drank a hotbeverage and scolded it on one side.
I was worried about this and wondered if maybe the dr bad cut something he shouldn't have or something so was looking to see if other people had experienced the same.
One thing I have learnt is eat and drink what is comfortable for YOU. different people seem to experience different responses. I have had times that cold custard was heaven to eat then suddenly the next day it caused pain. Or when ice chewed and swallowed was a relief from the agonizing pain but 2 days later felt like fire in my throat. Lukewarm tea hurt like hell to begin with but now is soothing forthis tongue problem I am having.
A few things which are great to have ....
A vaporizer for the room you sleep in. It keeps the air moist so your throat doesnot dry and crack.
Anasthetic throat lozengers the one my fiancé picked up is strepsils +plus anaesthetic
chewing gum. This helps keep the saliva going and thus keeps the throat moist and also keeps your jaw muscles working so you will find it easier to eat.
I found liquid paracetamol a huge help instead of tablets it seems tone absorbed by the sore areas on the throat and works a lot quicker than a pill.
To the lady early on in the thread who attacked people for posting their pain. People who have been through this need to talk to each other and help others who may want tips to help or even want an idea how much longer the pain wll last or if what's happening to them is normal. So if your son doesn't want the op because of what he read it's your responsibility tohave kept him away or counselled him on both good and bad of the op.

im on day 6...and i can safely say this sucks soooooooo bad!!! at first i had stuff like hanging from in the back of my throat and of course it hurt like no bodies business but mucus was just stuck there and i felt like i was choking...because you know it scared me to try to hack it up, because I could feel that tissue moving and I was scared I was gonna damage something! So all night long the first 2 days I would wake up choking to death!!! And day 2 when I looked back there with this nifty light pen thing my mom has....its all black with white stuff! it made me want to vomit...speaking of which I feel like I have to vomit basically all the time no matter what I do...my doctor said i would feel better if i could...but i cant!! this sucks soooooooooo bad!!! and the taste is absolutely disgusting!!!!! and i feel horrible....but im sure i would have felt alot worse with the tonsils till there because mine had actually started to rot....soooooo gross!! Someone please tell me there is a light at the end of this tunnel :'(
