Great guide! I am on day two, and the pain is terrible. It doesn't help that I have allergies and can't stop coughing though. I guess now I know to expect worse pain tomorrow:(

I'm 37 and I got mine out last week Im in day 7, my Dr recomend eat steack every meal, hurts like a b... But also cleans my throat, in day 5 I rode 1000 miles on a bike trip. Never had any bleeding, once in a while I spit out some tissue like really thin skin, been sucking calor aseptic like crazy, but pain is nothing more than a serious sore throats, never got nausea, i get worst pain at night, I actually wake up with throat in searing pain I can feel my heart beat in my throat. I guess mental state is a winner, I decide to screw the pain so far so good, I should get ear pain by tomorrow by the books, no ear pain yeat, I been eating regular, today I have Taco Bell, yes yes and yeas hurts but is healing you at the same time, I got best dr at UTMB personal friend, he was not happy tough about motorcycke trip. Tips
Cloreseptic throat losengers ( not the filled ones) hard cherry, 15 bottles water x day, I'm drinking very strong ice tea ( tea is a serious astringent great to prevent bleeding) I replace the bottle water with
a gallon and half of ice tea. Eat up like u mind it would hurt but won't kill you. And keep positive outlook crying in bed or enyoing the day the pain would be there , the rest is your option.

I had my tonsils partially removed Thursday 8 days ago, and after very bad pain for a week I finally had one night where I didn't wake up once!

But I'm still worried - my doctor suggested that my tonsils should only get partially removed with the coblation method, and I have no knowledge on the subject so I couldn't say anything to argue against it.

But now I am really worried that the tonsil stones will come back, as I didn't get them fully removed, but only a big part of them. The pain has still been unbearable at times, but I really don't care about that. Can anyone tell me if they had permanent success with partial removal of the tonsils - or can I look forward to having those nasty tonsil stones in my life again?

Thanks for your real input. I am 17 days post op. I didnt have pain days 2-6... No pain meds. Day 6-7... Scabs taste and smell gross! That metallic taste made my jaw muscles seize like a leg cramp! Sore for days after. When scabs started coming off days 6-7 then I toon pain meds. It was sensitive, my jaw hurt and I was't suffering. I didnt have intense pain like some people. 101.5 fever til day 9. My problem is on right side there are these two yellowish cord like pieces that are attached to throat where tonsil was. Irritate, in the way, scratchy. I don't know what it is. Need to call surgeon monday. Holiday hours are crazy. Im glad your surgery was well worth it. I am looking forward to not having this string like cords on the one side so I can eat and sing without anything in the way.

I am 20 years old on day 8 post op. I started to bleed on day 5 as I had to clear my throat and bleed about 3 tablespoons of blood so back to the er to be put under again. I had very bad sinus problem causing my tonsils to swell. Where I couldn't talk for days. No dairy and the pain meds made my spit thick, I kept a spit bottle which was gross but I couldn't even swallow it most of the time. I wish I would have saw this before I tried to find day by day guides to help. My worst times are the mornings wake up crying even now from the ear pain. When on day 5 I had actually 3 cuts two were 1/8 in and one was 3/4 in. They said it was good I went in as if the clot would have fell off it would have kept on bleeding. They also said it will feel like popcorn on my throat as it does not. I'm just curious if food can get stuck in the scabs and cause damage? It feels more like food is stuck than popcorn.

I had my tonsils out on December 30th 2014. This was a REPEAT procedure because I had mine "partially" taken out with coblation in July 2014. Tissue grew back, tonsils stone came back. But, I am in the minority of this happening I believe. Anyhow, I had them fully taken out and it is severely worse than the first time. You are probably going to have great results. Hopefully you will not have to have the full process and have to have it repeated (I'm the 1st patient my dr has had to do this on twice). It has been terrible and I still can not talk correctly at this point (almost 2 weeks later).

I´m 35 years old, from Perú, south america, so excuse my english.. had mine taken out 7 days ago. The first 3 days pain is low, i could even talk, but still taking Tramadol 50mg (opium based medicine) Day 4 it gets bad, day 5 i woke up with dried mouth pain f****g horrible, and i´ve been handling it by waking up every 2 hours to put drops of xylitol on my nose and zip on warm water with chamomile, and taking more tramadol. Still eating and swallowing has been very painful. And im very hungry. NOW I´m at day 7 and just a couple hours ago Istarted bleeding and noticed the scab was falling, i just relaxed and let it bleed, spit more scab... and now pain is magically gone lower... great, hope it doesnt come back so bad again... cause i was crying because of the pain on day 6 in the morning when i had papaya juice... First 4 days i was at my parents house, they where good to me, now i´m at my girls and she is being good to me. Loved ones are good.

oK, so scabs are falling, feel better, still a little bit of the sensation of broken glass, just little bit. Ive being gargling with warm water, teaspoon of bicarbonate, drop of hidrogen peroxide, teaspoon of olive oil, i think that helps, also tongue scrapper helps, all that is for cleaning and taking bacteria away, brush your teeth,i think chewable probiotics might help too..  Dairy is too phlemy and ice cream or cold food too painful..  any sugar foods are phlemy too, but i eat some, like warm apple pie... cream vegetable Soups with no milk on them are good too, oatmeal ok... But this is TOTALLY WORTH, I REPEAT, TOTALLY WORTH, compared to living with tonsil stones and horrible breath. Dont be afraid, prepare yourself, have a really good and experienced doctor do the procedure  and go thru it if you´re suffering. My breath is way better, even though my throat is still a mess. But consider that post nasal drip and stomach gastric problems like reflux are still part of the breath problems, so i will keep the phlemy food very low to avoid nasal drip, xylitol drops, and eating healthy to avoid gastric problems. Live can be really good, there´s hope...

I also had a tonsillectomy due to tonsil atones. They didn't take my tonsils co plenteous out and I regret it. ALSO, I am on methadone, 100mgs. I have been for years. The pain meds they gave me were blocked by my methadone. So they did absolutely nothing for me! I have never felt pain like this, and I gave birth to 2 boys, naturally! And I have fibromyalgia! But this pain, different than anything I've experienced! If you are on methadone, please talk to your dr about what you can do to manage your pain. I was on straight liquid oxycodone, 80mgs at once I took, AND NO RELIEF! However,, I took children's liquid Motrin, AND IT SAVED MY LIFE! It made this tolerable. Also, I can't express enough, stay away from dairy! And, drink ice water and swallow often! It promotes healing! Also.. I set an alarm at night, for every 2-3 hours. I would wake up, and drink Ice water swallowing often. That, along with Motrin every 4-6 hrs (I'd wake up to take that too!) and a humidifier right next to me SAVED me from excruciating pain in the morning! The first swallow of the day is always hard! But waking up thru the night for meds and water HELPED!!!! Thank you

22 female-

I don't reply to stuff like this - but I'm 8 days post op and my experience has been exactly the same (down to nausea, vomiting, dehydration and emergency room trip for fluids and pain relief on day 3).

My pain is at a standard 2 now - which I am greatful for - but has anyone else been troubled by food getting caught in their tonsil wounds?

I only found this today, but after eating toast I had crazy pain (7) and a strange feeling in one side of my wounds. Looking in the mirror I saw the usual horror of scabs plus a mushy brown seedy goo that could only be my multigrain and Vegemite breakfast. It took water gargling, tonuge tricks and massaging my troat from under my jaw to dislodge the painful foreign mess. I still think I have a few seeds trapped but can't get them out.

It makes me a bit hesitant at my next meal...

Also (tip for players)

1) chew gum!!!! It will keep your scars from getting too tight and reduce jaw pain! Chew it the moment you wake up from surgery. No joke - it was my saviour!

2) be ready to loose weight due to poor diet.

I started the tonsillectomy jouney at a slim 57kg and at day 8 have fallen to a skeletal 52kg. I suggest a bit of fattening up to those thinner patients (like myself) before surgery just so you don't end up dangerously undernourished.

I'm on the track to recovery and looking forwards to being able to destroy a burger (pain free) with full taste. Good luck to everyone else on their tonsillectomy journey.

thank you for this. My son is 12, and sufferes from horrible tonsil stones. (he is currently in the bathroom, trying to blast them out with a water pik) His breath is TERRIBLE, and I don't want him to feel badly about himself. He has excellent oral hygiene, and I feel so sad for him. I am considering taking him to an ENT for a tonsilectomy eval. I hate to put him through surgery, but I don't want him to suffer with this either. Knowing you feel it was worth it REALLY helps!
