I had knee surgery due to a meniscus tear and I didn’t feel comfortable taking off my underwear and I was very upset because they told me I couldn’t keep my underwear on but it was ok to keep my socks on? I was ashamed and very embarrassed and I felt violated!

It is not always necessary to have a catheter. Check with your doctor. As far as an emergency some of that is them blowing smoke.

Totally agree, think I may need surgery on my pelvic area but have now been looking at the posts on various sites saying all underwear needs to be removed, or EVEN WORSE will be removed while you’re unconscious. I’m totally uncomfortable with this and would rather suffer with my condition without surgery than do this. So disgusted at the thought doctors/nurses/med student could look at your private parts without your consent atall.

I recently had a colonoscopy at a VA medical center. I changed into the hospital gown but left my briefs on. I had an all female colonoscopy team doctor, nurse, anesthesiologist, and an intern. When I got to the room the nurse and intern lifted the gown and pulled off my briefs from either side leaving me fully exposed. I know men aren't thought to have modesty concerns but I do and that was an uncomfortable moment. I sure would have appreciated colonoscopy shorts because I felt it was unnecessary to have my genitals exposed with four women looking on. Then they knocked me out with a combination of Demerol and Versed. I was so groggy afterwards that I barely remember leaving the hospital.

I suppose you never asked them if you got an erection during the procedure.

I'm going to ask them to take a picture of it for me, I haven't seen one in so long.

Too late. I'm not scheduled for another colonoscopy for five years. Being 72 who knows if I will even be around then.

It's against the VHA directive to photograph patients during medical procedures without informed consent by the patient or the patient's representative.

I understand fully. I realize the doctors and medical people see a lot of private parts but we as patients are not used to our privates being seen especially by medical people of the opposite sex. I'm an older male and the VA facility I go to has a lot of young women doctors and nurses and I haven't been comfortable with some of the procedures. I had a dear lady email friend who passed away a few years ago because she felt much like you about being seen and touched by doctors and nurses. She had described the health issues she was having and I had urged her to get to a doctor to no avail.

As far as I know I would be the patient at my own procedure.

I think we always are the patient at our own procedure, lol.

If you want a photo of an erection why don't you take one of your own? Or is that a problem for you and what you meant by you haven't seen one for so long?
