The medical team is use to seeing everything, but I'm not. Consideration for those who have had sexual trauma. I'm not taking my sports bra off-totally unnecessary-I'm insisting on weRing disposable underwear that they may have to take off due to veins high in thigh & im not liking it but know it could be in the wast.
Spell correct-way -it's now up to the surgical center to comply with some of my wishes
I'm having bi-lateral stab phlebectomy, & was told my gown will be off, no undergarments allowed due to sterile environment. I'm having extreme anxiety over this. Also I requested no medical student observing/shadowing , my surgeon said she could not guarantee it & I should seek a private facility if this was a problem. No compassion for my modesty. I have severe swelling in my legs which makes the braces I wear extremely tight. I can't sleep or eat. Surgery is scheduled in 4 days.
I was told my gown would be removed(bi-lateral stab phlebectomy), and all scrub techs & whoever else is in the OR will see. Can I get anesthesia aftee the scrubbing? I have unhealthy anxiety. Can they refuse my surgery because I refuse to remove gown? Also I'm getting a general-I'll be total defenseless & will never know if they honor my modesty requests.
Unfortunately, doctors and facilities sometimes can't or won't see the human side of what they do.
If you really are insistent on leaving them on you may have to do what many of us already do and call around until you find a facility and Doctor who will honor your request.

Can you have someone in the room with you or can you be in the room with someone? My husband needs necks surgery, he's good with it but I'm not for the very reasons you stated above. I have full blown panick attacks. I feel like if I'm in there I can help "save" him if something happens or save him from someone abuse him. I'm not really sure why I have these attack but I'm going to find iut, but I feel I would be better if I were in there.
It depends on the surgery type, the facility and doctor.
As an example.
A lot of urological procedures that used to be done in the hospital OR are moving to the surgical suite right next to the doctors office.
One of the things they are experimenting with is what's called a “verbal anesthetist”.
The patient is given a local anesthetic then while the doctor does the procedure, there is another assistant (usually another female), at the head of the table talking to the patient trying to keep their mind off of what the doc is doing.
That may work for people who don't object to opposite gender care. But for those wanting same gender care it's another nightmare.
If the patient has a spouse, they should be experimenting with allowing the spouse (if they want to), to carry on the conversation with the patient while the doctor works.
Easier to carry on a conversation with a spouse than a complete stranger under the circumstances. Especially if the patient is male & it's his first time in stirrups.
Medical community not thinking about the patient much anymore. Just get'em in and get'em out.
They're still running under the myth that Healthcare is gender neutral.
They're the only ones that still think that way & the sooner they forget about it the better everyone will be.

Why are you here?
Why are you here?
Are you serious? Have you read the many posts here? Do you care what style /color/fit clothing you wear? If a woman, do you wear makeup? Do you care what your hair looks like? Hell, why care about anything, right?
I agree. In fact I refused a Foley catheter during my C-Section so they just had me empty my bladder before epidural. Also I kept my underwear on and refused to take them off and the doctor just said for me to know they could get blood on them and ruined. I didn't care. I know WAY too many perverts in medical care. They are still human regardless!!
Also I demanded a female doctor and staff during Csections and they accommodated me except anesthesiologist. They called the female doctor from her home in bed. I don't feel bad either. I paid $30k out of pocket for surgery

The accommodation afforded you was an exception and not the rule. Most of the time, hospitals will not go out of their way when it comes to supplying same gender teams for procedures. I suspect your out of pocket pmt. had something to do with it.
Someone could make a lot of money if they came up with decent hospital underclothes for men and women. Undergarments that provided accessibility for IV's and other things but at the same time protected the patient's dignity.
