You couldn't have said it better
"READ the consent form at least a WEEK before your surgery and respond to the form with what you will and won't consent to. "
Rarely do you see the consent form before surgery. That's how they get over on many patients.
Wait until just before surgery when the patient is most vulnerable & have them sign then when they don't really have the time to read it over thoroughly before signing.

I truly like your post and totally agree with you. I heard too many horror stories and i'm modest. Getting ready for knee surgery and made it clear to the Doc, I'm wearing the undies.
Thank you for great advice, I may have to use it on the day !
Again, thank you

How painful is it. Mine scheduled tomorrow
My husband has had surgery on his throat a few times and he had to remove his underwear
Two nurses from UK have come up with digni bras and unisex underwear for surgeries. They basically will not get them in the US and this is because in the US they don'the care about the patient only the bottom dollar. We are pieces of meat uproducts for slaughter.
I just recently had femur surgery i demanded NO UNDERWEAR REMOVAL AND NO FOLEY they made me sign a paper stating. I dont know if they did it while under but i woke the way i went in. Except with damaged shoulder if they have to remove underwear cut them off
Exactly I had miniscus surgery as well and refuse to take them off and did not have a problem when I woke up. What kind of hospital rips your clothing that's weird. I agree with everything you say and have heard that also about paps. I thunk its just awful how some of the pre-op nurses and staff behave about having to shove unnecessary things in you, on you or otherwise especially out patient and when the area has nothing at all to do in that area. Sterile environment you better more worry snout them. Leaving tools in you
That's your opinion but inaccurate there is more mistakes made in surgery than fires breaking out because someone has underwear on that's just stupid and RN or not you people make like you have all the power its time to set it straight You don't and your a male nurse at that. Ugh
went in for tonsil surgery went to the OR with gown and underwear on. Woke up in recovery with an adult diaper on. They said I had an accident during the procedure which went on for longer than expected.
Your missing the point Gary, alot of people are truly embarressed about their body or certain body parts being exposed to everyone in the room. We could give a sh*t less if you as a nurse don't have a problem with seeing naked patients. This isn't about you it's about making the patient as comfortable as possible, especially if they have never had surgery before. Have some respect for people and their feelings.
When I was a child I had surgery on my head to remove a cyst. Oddly I was allowed to leave all my clothing and the only covered with sterile cloth was around the area. Again as a child I was taken for a trauma accident. I was stripped down to nothing to be examined! We must have been tougher back then or doctors and nurses could treat patients without having to totally demean them. Over the last 40 years I have seen less respect for patient’s rights not to exposed. If a patient says no it is their choice not the doctor or nurse. I have even been awake giving a procedure done that someone walked in not sure if it was a janitor housekeeping or someone being nosey. Doctor stopped and ordered them to leave so apparently there was no reason for them to be there.
Actually I meant I was not stripped down to nothing for trauma accident. While I am sure at times the patient has to be stripped and may have saved lives. I also feel that it is for doctor and nurse convenience and make the patient feel vulnerable and more likely to comply when the trauma team becomes the drama team.
You can NOT wear ANY clothes from outside the facility in the operating room. Reason? Infection Control
That is also a bunch of nonsense and for nurse convenience. If there is an emergency shears get rid of clothing in a hurry. If you don’t need a catheter you shouldn’t have one they can cause other complications also. Do your research before surgery and make sure it is necessary. They want you versed so they can move your body around and you not ge able to voice objections to it. I have lost so much respect for healthcare professionals who have seen it all and apparently feel it is their right.
