It definitely is the iud. I just got my iud removed due to the same problem, instantly the smell went away. Get the rod implant. Don't mess with the iud. It is embarrassing and makes you self conscious. Remove!!!!
Hi, I had the exact same problem 6 months after having my iud put I place. I found that douching with vinegar everyday or every other day has completed eliminated the problem. Douching is not bad for you if done with vinegar, it actually prevents yeast infections. I don't know why people think that douching will cause more problems than the smell of the iud. Vinegar is good for you and will leave you feeling like a normal person again.
I have the copper IUD and like clockwork before, after and during every cycle I have a terrible odor. I have no infection ect ect. I've been to the doctor more than once. I have had my IUD for over 6 months and I am pretty certain it is the cause. Others have the same issue. I have an appt to have it checked once again in Nov and I will likely have it taken out. I hate being on hormones but I hate the embarrassing odor (that I've never had in my life until now) more.
So glad to fund this page. I have had my mirena for 8 months. After 6 months I started boticing the smell. I went to my PA and she teated for bacterial infection. Results came back said I didn't have one but gave me an antibiotic. At that point I hadn't had sex In 8 months. After the medicine the smell went away. i was odor free for 2 months. Had a check up with my gyno she tested me and I had no infections and a week after that check the amell came back. I have had to wear a panty liner almost the entire time I have had this thing. I had it implanted to slow down my extreme menstral cycle from my fibroids. Had a tubal 10 years ago. This smell is driving me crazy and I can't stand smelling myself.
Ive had my iud in a year and I also have a weird smell I've never had before until the IUD was placed in and I take very good care of my body and I've never had this problem before so I'm thinking also about getting my IUD removed because I think it's from the IUD itself ive had other birth control in the past an ever had a issue til this iud
Ok, Seems most people on this forum had their IUD's removed. Question is: What form of contraceptive do you turn to when you've stopped using IUD's? I've had mine for over 3 years and thinking to take it out soon (to try for a baby) but have no clue what to use after because as smelly as this thing is, it's pretty convenient! No thoughts about it (again, except for the smell) and my partner understands. So… What's the next best thing?
I am so happy I found this site and these answers. Having an IUD inserted was painful for me and I had bleeding and spotting for the first couple months. I worked through it because it seemed so easy. But after all that I have had a horrible odor. I have been tested for infections and that is not the case. The odor comes and goes without warning. I am always worried about it and have no desire to be intimate - which is the whole reason I got this. After 6 months I am going back to the pain.
This speaks volumes to me because... sis... I am right there with you! I am on Paraguard and pretty sure its coming out!!!! Rather have a 3rd child then keep it in...nuff said! Best wishes
I have the same issue with odor and also have a liquidy discharge. I've had the Mirena for 4 1/2 years now and the problem started a year ago and is getting progressively worse. I am a clean person and use a basic dove soap daily. I now wear a panty liner 24 hrs a day and that doesn't help the odor, but protects my underwear some. At my last Ob/Gyn visit my dr. said he gets this complaint a lot from his patients with Mirena. My pap showed no signs of an infection. He put me on an antibiotic for 2 weeks and it actually went away, but then it came back and is worse than ever. I am going to call my dr. and ask to have it removed early, which he said was an option. He said I can go back on Seasonique BCP which only allows you to have a period every 3 mths. Good compromise. I'd rather have a period now and then than this! The Mirena has also caused me to have "hot flashes" or flushing of my cheeks and feeling hot all over, even when it is actually cold. I am not going through menopause (there is a hormone they can check with the IUD in and mine was normal). Good luck!
I also have the copper iud and I had never had an odor the way I do now. It's so bad sometimes my significant other feels a certain way as if I may be stepping out... And I have had it since we got together.... No kids but I'm sure he thinks I naturally smell this way!...... What to do?
I'm glad I'm not alone. I've had Morena for almost a year now and have an odor I have never had. I see a lit if women are saying its a fishy smell but mine smells like armpit B.O. Does anyone else have this kind of odor in that area? I'm thinking about having the Mirena removed as well.....
I too have had the small for about a year. I've had the mirena in for 2 years. I would have to change underwear multiple times a day because of the smell. The smell is like amonia or something. I've read so many forums. Looking for answers. Pantiliners didn't work. It made it still smell. I decided to try a pad. Since then I've had no smells and I'm feeling more confident about myself. I read either on here or another forum that your vagina discharge mixes with the laundry detergent causing the smell. I do believe that to be true. Because I would buy new underwear and not have that problem until I washed them. Hope this has helped someone
Smell* autocorrect sucks lol
I have had the same issue. I only started to have odor within the last month. I got my Mirena put in on September 1st. Up until this point it was the basic adjustments; cramps, slight bleeding, all that. However, I wanted to post to give some options to the smell BEFORE you get the IUD removed solely for the odor.
I found out that the smell is from the imbalance of hormones from your body adjusting to your implant. Basically, your body is trying to repel a foreign object, and is all in a tizzy over it. So I thought I'd try a few things to help me body, because I do love my IUD and I want to two to get along.
1. Greek yogurt. If you do not eat it on a daily basis, give it a try. I eat it for snacks, so I have about 2 a day. It gives your body the bacteria it needs for your lady parts to keep the balance healthy. Although I understand not everyone can have greek yogurt, so here's the other stuff I found...
2. "Lady Part Soap", like Summers Eve. I actually get the Walmart brand because it's only $1.97. I put "soap" in quotations because it's not actually soap. Although it is a cleanser, and it will help regulate your body's natural bacteria and hormones from the outside.
3. "Lady Part Spray", also, like Summer's Eve. This one I actually do use Summers Eve. I spray it on the outside of my pants/ leggings in that area and it does wonders. Of course, this only helps throughout the day.
4. Monistat. I got the off-brand 7 day because it was only $5 and I didn't know how long I'd need to use it. Turns out that I only had to use 2 days worth this time. I take it at night when I sleep, wake up and shower with my soap, and then keep the spray in case I need it. I have already seen a drastic improvement over the last week.
I really hope this helps someone. I tried the most inexpensive ways that I could think of to help after I read up on what I thought the reason was. I'm also a self-solver, so I wouldn't advise using any of this if you have and it hasn't worked, or you know you won't react well to it. Still, I thought I'd add what has helped me. Good luck, ladies!

I thought maybe it was just me. Not everyday, but maybe 30% of the month I cannot stand the smell of my vagina! A sharp smell, maybe a smidge metallic... That's the best I can describe it. Often accompanied by a regular amount of clear to whitish discharge. I do not douche, and don't have that much sex at the moment but it does make me wildly self conscious!
