Muscle spasms started for me in the upper left part of my abdomen after I had my lap band removed. It had eaten through my stomach and I had to have it removed and that's when these Charlie horse or muscle spasms started occurring

Wow, you to! Did you ever find anything that could help. I had my removed and since then I have wide spread pain and very painful abdominal muscle spasms. I get radiating pain wide spread. I feel like the spasms are wide spread to. Its like a shaking sensation

I have the exact symptoms - on the right side. When I first brought this up to my doc they did an ultrasound and found that I had gall stones and assumed they were the cause of the cramping (they said a stone could be getting trapped in my rib cage). So, I had my gall bladder removed. However, the cramps/spasms still continue. Mine are caused by the same situations (sneezing, situps, stretching the wrong way). I'm able to get rid of mine pretty quickly by laying down or stretching out. I'm able to cope with it, but it would be nice to know what's going on!

I get these charlie horse pains in my upper stomach shortly after eating. They are horrible and can last an hour. I also get nauseous with it, and after the pain subsides I get a bit of a fever. I afraid to eat for fear of it happening!

I have had the exact same thing for about 6 years now. Gallbladder was removed 5 years ago to no avail. One year ago I had torsion surgery in groin and that helped but now I still get pain in right abdomen followed by nausea. I have been to the er around 25 times for severe vomiting and abdominal pain since gallbladder removal but only once since the torsion surgery and I am able to manage the nausea with over the counter products and different breathing techniques. I wish you the best of luck and hope you get better. Check out wim hoff tech. It has helped me tremendously.

I too suffer with these severe muscle spasms in my right upper abdominal area that last 1 or 2 minutes sometimes longer, it literally feels like someone slammed a knife into my stomach. It always happens when I bang the back of my head and Alot more in the summertime I work construction. It's some embarrassing , I literally have to stand straight up and grab something to stretch, it looks like a ball is coming out of my abs

I am so glad to see I am not the only person with this issue. It has gotten to where i am afraid to move for fear of bringing on yet another spasm. Lying down doesn't seem to help me much, but, a bar of soap helps almost immediately. I keep a bar of soap handy and if I lay it on my abdomen, where the spasm is, the spasm stops. I find the smellier the soap is the better it works so I use a new bar every couple of months. I have NO idea why this gives me relief, but it does and since nothing else does I will continue to use it. Please try it, you have nothing to lose and it isn't harmful in any way.

This is what I got two days ago after a grueling visit to a busy city. I had been walking on cement until my feet hurt, and I was dehydrated. Sitting on the subway, I felt that familiar hideous cramp start suddenly at the top of my stomach, and it was like a fishing wire tightened all the way up my left side, connecting with my left jaw under the ear, down through my esophagus and into my stomach. The jaw and ear pain was almost intolerable, as was the pain deep into my torso on the left side. It would come in spasms. I have had this infrequently for about five years (maybe once a year). I have been subject to "Charlie Horses" all my life, but I also now get them in my rectum, and that's nearly as painful. (It's called proctalgia fugax, usually relieved by having a bowel movement.) The stomach pain eased up after I got out of the subway and to my destination, and after a glass of water and relaxation it was gone completely. It comes during periods where I'm under stress, or out of electrolytes or something. I thought I was having a heart attack the first time it happened. Why don't any medical experts weigh in here? I'd like at least a term applied to this condition (X-algia fugax, since it's "fleeting"). What muscle or bundle of muscles or fascia are contracting and why? Do any of you get this during travel or under conditions where you aren't drinking enough?

Has anyone who's been to a doctor about this symptom been told it was a hiatal hernia, GERD? I notice that a lot of you describe it's being on the left side of the abdomen/torso. Has any of you been made to have an endoscopy? Any answers received? Or is this page just for people who want to hear that other people have the same symptoms? I have a horrible fear of endoscopies, especially since I am immune to the effects of Versed. I never go to sleep when given that, and I've got a phobia about retching. :( Sheesh. I suppose I should bite, so to speak, the bullet.

I frequently have these pains in my abdomen from sitting in an awkward position. I find that eating one or two spoonfuls of French is yellow mustard can make them go away. I found this on People's pharmacy and it really works for me. I hope it can help you as well .

I too started having this pain after my gallbladder was removed. I'm a month post surgery and my best description is it feels like a Charlie Horse. No dr seems to know why.

I just ran across this site and I am also relieved to know that I am not the only one with this problem!! Just like Hasznone and the Guest above him/her.....I have the very same symptoms doing the very same things. I have even been sitting in a restaurant talking with friends and start to laugh and it "grabs" me. It is startling when it hits and it is very painful. I have gotten it driving if I looked too quickly to the side or twisted to get into the car. When you are in public and it hurts so bad....you just have to act normal and hope it goes away quickly. It really is horrible and seems to be getting worse. I have not heard anyone say that it actually gets sore sometimes after having a really bad one. Almost like I have been exercising those particular muscles and they are sore! That doesn't happen all the time. So do we get any answers from this column? I don't know if I have a terrible tumor or something going on in there or what? I did tell my doctor and she said, you are over weight and those muscles tend to just float around in there???!!!? She was not interested in talking about it any further so I dropped it. Can anyone give me some insight?

I think your all over thinking it. First doctors are idiots and will mess you about because they have no clue. 1tiny muscle imbalance will ruin your life. Go see a sports therapist. Not one through the doctors. Get a deep sports massage to see where your muscles are tight and spasmodic. Then go see a needle therapist. They retouch the muscle to tell the brain to release the muscle that has turned to rock because it's been left untreated. That's the reason why doctors can't find anything and then BS you instead of saying iv no idea. General practitioners know a little bit about a few things so why go to them and expect answers. They will always send you from pillar to post. Look at sports experts and people who can actual help.

I thought I was the only one. I never had this issue until about 5years ago after I had my 1st child. But they have become way more frequently after having my 2nd who is now a little over 3yrs old. I have never had any surgeries so for me it wouldn't be a scar tissue issue. Sometimes its b triggered if I'm working out. Especially if I'm trying to do ab work. But mostly when I'm just sitting and driving which is horrendous. Trying to maintain the wheel and apply pressure to the area. The last one I had a cpl days ago was when I was sitting watching a movie on a plane. It felt the muscle was knotted up into a cpl of golf ball size knots. I stretched to the right with my left arm up and just tried to massage the knots. I just thought it was weakened abdominal muscles after having kids. But the pain is so intense and it lasts quite a while, it's up there near the child birth pain. And the th soreness lingers I always feel like any movement may trigger another one.
