I just had this IDU put in, in June and for the most part things have been fine. Once a month for about 4-6 hours I will have horrible cramps then it goes away. I have been bloated once or twice and I do spot bleed alot. Im not in a relationship thank god so I can live with it for now. But the Itching just started about 4 days ago and at fisrt I didnt think it was related. I just got off the phone withg my doctor and we are going to try cream i guess! I dont have burning or pain but the itch is enough to drive me crazy. it even keeps me up at night. I am going to give the cream a shot and if the itching returns this IUD is coming out!
:'( :'( I too have had itching, burning, cramping, slight odor, and lets not talk about the endless spotting! I had to be treated for BV in May. I have had the Mirena for about 9 months now and want it removed. I have an appointment in two weeks.
Hi Everyone,
I experienced the same with my Mirena. I went to the doctor and found out that my Mirena gave me a bacterial infection known as Bacterial Vaginosis. I would suggest to all of you that are experiencing these issues to see you health care provider to get the proper antibiotics. Your body basically is trying to reject the Mirena as it sees it as a foreign object in your body. Your body's natural response is to fight off any foreign object or virus as it believes that you are getting sick. Your body then creates extra "good" bacterial to fight off the mirena which then turns bad because there is too much in your system.
As an STD/HIV Educator, it is always a good thing to get any of those symptoms checked out and not to be ashamed of getting BV. Although it is considered an STD since many cases are caused by a woman having many sex partners, a lot of them are caused by natural body response to a change in hormones or PH balance.
If you are experiencing those symptoms, SEE YOUR DOCTOR!!!!

Hey everyone, I have had my IUD for almost 4 years now and I agree with all of you with it sucking. I have the horrible itching, swelling, pain and even dicharge that sometimes requires me to use a pantyliner constintly. It sucks so bad. It has even started affecting my sex life with my husband. He tells me to get it taken out, but having to boys already I am terrified. I can't take the pill cause I have oracle migranes. I am lost with what to do and I have tried the creams and everything else and it does not work. I told my doc about it and the fact that I have no sex drive anymore and he doesn't know how to reply. If anyone has had these problems and had the iud removed and it got rid of them please let me know.
hello. im 17 years old and have had mirena for about 6 months, i have recently began to have some sexual contact with my boyfriend and it seems that i bleed after. not heavy like a period but more that spotting. i never really thought anything of it until now. anyone out there who can help or give advice besides going to the doctor? my strings shriveled up so when i want to get it out i have to be knocked out. could that be part of it? thanks
I have had the Mirena for almost 4 years and am experiencing the same thing! It started a few months ago and I also thought it was a yeast infection. I even went to the Dr and was tested for STDs (even though I have been married for 8 years) and nothing was positive. I am super frustrated and plan to get it removed at my next appointment. I can even feel the string at the opening of my vagina. The itching, irritation, and burning are unbearable!
i am so glad i found this site i have had the mirena for 8 months and all of the sudden i am having vaginal swelling and burning and very painfull intercourse so i went to my gyn and was treated for a yeast infection and it was better for a couple of days so my hubby and i decided to have sex and that was aweful it hurt so bad that after i was buring like someone had but a lit match to my vagina and around my clitoris it feels like shards of glass everytime i moved. so needless to say i have been sitting on ice packs to help with the pain and after reading the post i am thinking of having it removed
i was wondering , i know everyone is talking about itching and burning but does anyone has any discharge ? its like white/yellow ish and it comes out like you just had your period or something , idk if i should check it out ? or is it normal ? but please help me ! =/
Wow, reading all these posts at least lets me know I'm not the only person experiencing some of these side effects. The itching is crazy! I thought it was from my hair growing back in after I shaved but then I thought, that never happened before! I am really considering having it removed but I cannot risk another baby at this point in my life! The discharge is also annoying....it feels like it's just running water sometimes. UGH! so gross and uncomfortable. I wish I had known this before or I would have never gotten it!!
Hmmms, After reading all of this everyone seems to have symptoms well after Mirena is inserted. True an increase in in hormones will cause side effects ( Look at the side effects of pregnancy..... a baby) But perhaps, since alot of women suffer from either Bacterial Vaginosis and/or Yeast Infections atleast once in their life, they are simply coincidental and the regular dose of progesterone is causing more estrogen to be produced around the time for ur period
I've am super sensitive to hormone changes and I do get yeast infections and since I have been diagnosed a few times. I always get one around my period when my Hormones shift, especially if I am extra bitchy and more sensitive. .
I believe that becuase I am allergic to dairy ( have to stay away from milk protiens ) I do not get enough of the daily probiotics to help my body balance the natural amount of bacteria normal to my body.
Either way, don't bash Mirena cause you don't feel it is working for you, for some people it works wonders from everything to extremely heavy bleeding to preventing pregnancy. Just try to look at coincidences and such before taking it out on the device and know that hormone changes cause alot of problems for alot of people. birth controll pills cause the same issues.

to the person who posted on 12/30 and stood up for mirena, even though some of us experienced symptoms well after mirena had been inserted, it is still really strange and too coincidental that we women, who have only had one sexual partner who's healthy, all have been diagnosed with bv since women get bv through std's or progesteron iud's.
If you don't get bv taken care of then the constant or reoccurring bv will cause you infertility or constant cervic pain. i'm still dealing with the aftermath of my mirena, which used progesteron. i had a open mind about mirena when i chose to have it inserted and was excited to not worry about taking birth control daily and having great worry free sex with my husband, but since the mirena iud was inserted (and now removed) we have rarely had sex because it hurts. i'm really upset about it and hope my vagina goes back to normal soon.

You probably suffer from recurring yeast infections, I used to have severe yeast infections while I had Mirena.

Hey..
I also had the coil inserted..twice.. the first time was done 'live' and because of the pain.the Dr said my body shifted it.. After about three weeks of constant abdominal pain I went back to him. He had me put under while he removed that one and placed another one..
Then it all went south from there. I got married and asked him for a pill that would put off my period for a week or two.. i started drinking them was bleeding my whole honeymoon. When i stopped drinking them, the blood went away..He also gave me pills to make the bleeding and the pain go away ..to days before my wedding.. it just got worse...
Now, almost two months into my marriage..My husband| lives in Arabia, and I only got here two weeks ago.. and had sex for first time in a month and a half. I was a virgin on my wedding night, so there is no chance of any std's...
The pain is still there.. as well as a sometimes rather bloody discharge, burning when peeing...and during or after sex.. and my period seems to have vanished...And sometime it is more like pieces of my vagina are falling out..
WHAT now...
Oh and a question... The yoghurt that goes on the condom for the fighting of bacteria..Do you have sex with that condom? Of just rub the yoghurt on ?

Have it removed!!!! i had the symptoms for 8 months before i decided to have mirena taken out last week. i feel tremendously better! i can't even begin to tell you! i knew it was the cause! It was immediate relief. my doctor prescribed me Tindamax to take right before removal to rid my body of any of the bacterial vaginosis. the difference is unbelievable. i feel back to normal. i am now on the pill.
wow! im so so happy i found this site. i thought i was the only one experincing these weird and not normal symtoms. BM-before mirena- I was always lubricated, no extra work required, but now, my husband says its really dry just before sex. and of course, after sex, the most uncomfortable and unbearable itching begins and you cant stop. oh yeah, dont even think about washing, because it only hightens the iritation. i have scratched and scrathed to try and combate the itching, and just when i think ive got the itch, heres the burn!!! im like OMG will this ever end. and just this evening, i went to the restroom and i had a pink thick discharge, i know TMI-too much info- but i think the reason why we are on this site posting our complaints is because of a lack of information. side effects were a chance of IUD insertion in the uterus, not a constent itching, burning sensation after sex. my husband also complains of the string(wire) scratching the top and the side of his "Magic Stick". Mirena, you sounded really good on tv and in the doctors office, but in real life, you got problems. I want a divorce!!!
