It sounds like cutanious horn or keratin horn. It is a tumor (sometimes cancerous) and causes a growth from the skin of keratin, which is the substance that makes up your finger nails and also feathers and wool in animals.

See a dermatologist promptly for treatment. You may want to consider leaving the horn and not extracting it so that the doctor is able to see it in place. If you have one that you have pulled out, you should retain it and take it to the doctor with you.

I had one of these last week. It was about 4.5 inches long and was about as dense as low gauge fishing line. Showed my wife and she screamed.

It is supposedly caused by damaged DNA (a common occurance) And it, in the same way moles and other blemishes are created, causes a sort of mutation in the cells that produce keratin, therefore leading to long hair. By personal experience (warning: not scientifically proven) I THINK it is caused by stress, just pluck them. the same for the thin ones. :)

Sounds like a Keratin horn.

ANSWER:

I've had a couple of these. At first, I discounted Pili Multigemeni, because it was, to me, just one, large, very thick hair--not several. In fact, it seemed like a hollow bit of plastic.

Turns out, this was just a layer of keratin (the stuff skin and hair are made of) that had formed a sheath around the hairs over time. Upon carefully dissecting it, there were 5 or 6 little hairs trapped inside.

I couldn't see those 5 or 6 follicles from which this grew because they were positioned abnormally deep in my skin, likely the cause of the hairs bundling together like this in the first place.

This is most common in body areas that experience friction and shaving. I'm not sure if they are the cause of ingrown hairs, or whether ingrown hairs are the cause of the deep follicles. Regardless, there exists a correlation.

As a suggestion, please don't assume Morgellons as non-specific symptoms are being reported throughout such a wide range and are becoming sort of piled on to the whole Morgellons issue. Many years ago I had an accident wherein I suffered alot of flesh wounds. Upon doctors looking into my weird hair problems it was discovered that I had injured follicles and areas of keloid (re-healed ) skin where the follicles had. been pushed into wrong angles, even sideways and would and still do produce strange hairs. Old pimples or even bug bites or small scratches are even capable of causing these damaged follicles anywhere on the body. Don't panic or become too focused in on the morgellons...for your own health. Not saying it isn't but I wasted alot of time obsessing over my weird, wiry, stringy, painful, under-skin hairs going in circles around morgs. Good luck.

I've had these too. Had one on my cheek that stuck out about a quarter inch with about an inch under the skin. What it turned out to be was just a hair that had trouble growing out and my body saw it as an infection, sending white blood cells to attack it, resulting in the whole hair turning sort of a translucent yellowish white by the time I was able to pull it out.

My wife is pulling the same like string or hair from my back and she said she had out about a half an inch when it started to go back in by itself

LMAO, okay, that is funny! But the rest of these people are being serious. I like the part where you are talking about sneezing and cotton and lint ended up on your face.
