I am 51 years old and had my gallbladder removed in emergency surgery October 2009 via a traditional incision. I have been lucky to have no complications; however, I have been losing weight slowly and steadily (about 20 pounds so far). I am still a bit above "normal" weight for my height, but I am wondering how long I can expect this to go on? My diet has improved post-surgically, but it is far from perfect, especially because now I seem to be losing weight no matter what I do. FWIW my doctor thinks everything is OK. I think, why should I struggle to lose weight my whole life, then suddenly be successful?

Had my gall bladder removed last month after inflammation. I have lost over 1 stone and am maintaining the weight loss although I still experience pain. My weight loss was owing to the 5 days I was fasted whilst awaiting surgeory and now I do not crave crisps/choc and have yet to try carbonated drinks.

i had my gall bladder removed in may 2009, my weight was 191 lbs when i went into the hospital. after the operation, i have lossed 20 lbsit has been 10 months since the operation. i eat well, but i cannot put any weight back on. doctors have told me i will put it back on. my own doctor told me that i might not ever put the weight back on. iam ready to start to take a high calorie weight gainer, developed by a doctor who needed gain weight after having cancer. relax,it is also used by kids who need to put weight on to make the sports teams. the product is called suplimed. you mix it as a shake , it contains 650 calories per shake. check with your doctor first, since this product has a lot of sugar in it. i hope this product works for me, i want to put about 10 pounds on. good luck to all.

I am a 30 year old female and I had my gallbladder out 4/5/10 and I have not gained weight but rather have been losing as well. I thought it was perhaps because of my body trying to heal itself after surgery. I have had little to no complications from the surgery and actually have started running my 3 miles again 11 days after surgery (today). I tested my body and ate whatever I wanted for a couple of days (within reason) and did not gain weight, in fact I lost a pound or two. I had been eating a healthy diet prior to my surgery and exercising 6 days/week and lost 54 lbs. from Nov. 1st to the date of my surgery. I am 5'3" and weigh about 156 lbs. now. I was told that is how I developed gallstones...from losing a lot of weight. I did it the old fashioned way (diet & exercise) so I was surprised when they gave me my diagnosis of gallstones. I was not starving myself either. After my surgery I went online to see what kind of diet I should follow because I was basically told when I was discharged from the hospital that I could return to a normal diet. I started seeing lots of posts of people gaining weight and unable to stop it. Needless to say I began to get worried. I am so glad I found posts from people that are in the same boat as me. I plan on following the same healthy lifestyle as before my surgery and if I lose a little more weight...great! So far I have nothing bad to say about having my gallbladder out.

I had my gallbladder removed 10 days ago, Im 28 y/o and I admit to being over weight with a unhealthy diet. I did start working out and going rowing shortly before my first real "attack"( about 12 days). i have had stomach issues sense I was a child. I did lose some weight from the new work out, but now shedding pounds due to the new diet. I did try some fatty foods and did get some minor diarrhea the next day but over all doing very well and have lost 15 lbs sense the surgery. I also believe some people on here, go back to there "normal" diets and wonder why they still have the diarrhea and constipation and throwing up issues is because they wanted to go back to eating all that fried food. A healthy diet will not cause you to gain if you eat in proportion to what your body needs. read the Saturated fats on your food, and calories. that's what has made the change for me. I have found that I enjoy munching on graham crackers instead of salty popcorn, but that doesn't stop me from having a hand full of popcorn. remember to follow a few simple rules, make sure to stay around 2000 calorie diet if your not into working out, fruits and vegetables are not only good for you, but low in these calories and sat fat. Exercise but be aware that you can and probably will gain weight, that is muscle forming and will take MONTHS to shed the fat around the muscle. don't be discouraged and keep working out (try low burn and less weights)and eat less sat fats , fried foods, or the alcohol. I was afraid of surgery but for right now I am glad to have made the choice. and if any one was wondering what the prices was for the surgery, mine was around 14,000$

Hi. My name is Apple. I had my gallbladder removed April 2, 2011. It's been 13 months since my surgery. I gained almost 30 lbs since my surgery and since then.. I've had serious bathroom issues and since then I've always have soft stool. (I know it sounds gross....) There's times that it's so uncontrollable especially if I had an empty stomach and I would try to eat something. In about 30 minutes or maybe even before that. I would have that urge of going to the bathroom. It doesn't even matter what I eat...... If I have to go... That means I gotta go.. Not a second or a minute wait. =( About the weight gain thing. Before my surgery I lost about almost 50 lbs because I was always sick and also 2 months before my surgery I lost 25 lbs from exercising. But since after my surgery.. I've notice that I have been gaining weight no matter how little or how healthy I eat. I am not gonna lie. I haven't exercised much like I used too and I still eat fatty foods so I guess that explains the reason of my weight gain. But today.. I've decided to go back to the gym and go back to eating healthy food. I want to see if I'd be able to keep off some weight. Now that I see some posts here that say that they are able to lose weight after the surgery. It gave me some more motivation and hope of being able to keep some of the weight off. I'll keep everyone posted with my progress. =)

I'm seriously disgusted by the ignorant post that precedes mine, being a vegan doesn't mean that your healthy my friend in fact i might even venture to think your not getting all the nutrients and proteins your body needs by eating like that ((only a guess nothing more )). You certainly seem to be angry but that is no ones fault but your own. The only thing i agree with you on is Yes you should see a DR if your in pain but  most people do that anyhow so your post was as useful to me and most as a 60 year old new paper would be at telling me the current news. Now lets talk Genetics of which you obviously are from a family with poor genetics if this is an issue you gained from that alone. Unlike you  i would venture to say a fair share of the people reading these posts are not here because of crappy family genes. They are here for the same reason i am, looking for other people who have had similar experiences as theirs and they are wanting to know what is in store for them beyond the  surgery they have all had or are about to have. I too soon will join all of those people in having my gallbladder removed and mine will be removed not because of my family genetics but because of how I've eaten for the last 8 years of my adult life. Eating and indulging in drinking for some is a death sentence for our body's and organs. Where as some things just seem to happen like for me mine was out of no where my appendix burst not long after Christmas day when i was 12 years old. That i don't know could have been genetics but no one else in my family  had that problem in fact non have any of the problems i have. My gall problems started in July of last year 2010. at that point i didn't get a diagnosis for the pains i was having, at one point on the last trip to the ER i took, i thought i might be having heart problems so i had to have an ECG done. I kept telling myself I'm too young to have a heart attack I'm only 30, luckily it wasn't one, i was fine just under a lot of stress from the gall attack and i was just having a panic attack. i was then sent home with pain meds to help me get threw the next few days and i was told if i have any more problems come back right away. Luckily i change how i ate  so i never ended back in there until this year this past July 2011 almost a year to the day i had another attack and again was carted to the ER this time i got a diagnosis, i was told to have surgery as soon as i can it needs to come out. So here i sit still waiting to have that surgery, making sure day in and day out that i eat the right things or i pay for it  by again being doubled over in pain holding my ribs , curled into a ball on the sofa or bed. When i get the go ahead from my insurance i will have my surgery but that for me is only round one of the things i now need done, when i went to the DR after i was out of the ER this time they found i now do have heart problems, i now have a murmur which means that in time i will have to have surgery again to replace a valve in my heart when it goes fully bad.. This too is a problem none of my family members have. So of all things to blame genetics are at the back of the list, i only blame myself for my problems , I've given up putting off the blame onto others or objects and things. No one put the food to my mouth and said eat it, i did that of my own free will, and i continued to do it year after year knowing i didn't feel good and wasn't getting any better until one day a real problem presented itself that being my gall issues. There is a consequence to every action we take in this world, and sometimes we never see it until its too late, so i say this in closing. Do right by your body its the only one you get in this lifetime, not everyone can be a strict vegan but its not a far stretch to eat lots of fruits and veggies and to cut back and out some of the meats and poultry we  all eat on a daily basis. I know it is a hard thing to do if like me food was a passion of yours not just to eat it but to cook it. Lastly i will say that from the time my gall problems started until this very day i have lost 65 pounds with out any effort and i suspect that i will again loose more after i have my surgery. I will post again what i have found after that has happened, and to all who read this remember to Smile and try to stay positive about all that goes on concerning this, take each day at a time and things will look up.

On September 29th-2011 I had my gall bladder removed and inside was a stone a bit larger than a golf ball. . Before surgery I was fluctuating between 143 and 148 lbs. The heaviest I had been, was during the holiday season last year at 158lbs.

I am now between 124-126, depending on the time of day...

It is odd to me. I have had a fairly well balanced diet for the last 4 years or so (with occasional pizza nights with friends) but no more than a slice or two...What is going on? :/ Has anyone else experienced something similar?
