I had gallbladder removal a year and a half ago. I have always had a healthy diet, but have been loosing weight non stop ever since and I find it alarming! I was 135 when I had the surgery ,now I am 111 and still loosing. Ive had to start eating all day and have started a bulk up mix drink to try and hold or hopefully gain some back. its not working.Ive been to the doctors and they have run every blood test. No cancer etc.No one can tell what to do and really don't seem to care that much about it.

it's probably muscle mass you are gaining, not fat. don't sweat it or change what you're doing.

Hello, I'm going in for gallbladder surgery Jan 9th. I've been having attacks on and off for almost 2 years and never knew what they were. Last one ended me up in the ER. They did an ultrasound and found out I have LOTS of stones so it's coming out. I sure hope I loose like you did. I have been over weight for about 25 years and am hoping this helps. But I also have thyroid disease so I'm sure that has a lot to do with my weight. Thanks for the post, I was very worried about gaining but this gives me hope!

I had my gallbladder removed Dec. 28, 2013 I was feeling fine the first six days like I could eat anything with no problem then on the seventh day reality kicked in I've learned that I can't eat anything I was on the toilet all day. So I have officially started my bland diet..

Good Morning fellow GB removal peeps. Just wanted to share my story..After about 5 years of issues with my lil buddy (Gall Bladder) and trying to keep his anger on a leash by eating healthy and staying away from irritating foods, he turned on me in a vengance. I knew I had gallstones and was prolonging the inevitable, but a stone got stuck in the duct between the liver and the gall bladder and i woke up one morning with a horrible tummy ache. Thinking it was an ulcer or acid reflux, i tried alka seltzer, and pepcid and milk etc... after about 4 hours i couldnt deal any longer and off to the E.R. I go.. I was diagnosed with pancreatitis, jaundice, and of course Gall Bladder was behind it all. They had to stabilize me before they could do surgery, so they pumped the I.V. fluids in me and i passed the lil stone that was blocking the duct.. and had surgery on a Tuesday morning. 5 days after i went in to the E.R. Tuesday night I was released from the hospital. I got on the scales when i was released from the hospital and had gained almost 10 pounds!!!! I was absolutely horrified!! then every day it goes down a couple pounds.. I quickly realized that it was from water weight from pushing the IV fluid into my system. From going into the hospital...I have lost 8 pounds and it has 8 days. I can hang with that..I figured that since he caused me so much pain the least he could do was leave me a svelte body to continue on with!! I have no issues of running to the bathroom after I eat..I ride a motorcycle so that would not be right!!!although i do feel a little nauseated after I do eat. I am nervous about eating fatty foods..or having a beer...downside i personally have had is that because of this..i was put on a weeks rest and two weeks light duty at work...boss said nah- we can't hold your position...buh bye! So I start on a new path of life without my gall bladder and job. Meh- they will miss me!! anyways..chin up- take life one day at a time- Cruise on fellow friends..;) Teresa

My surgery was just 12 days ago. At my 1 week check-up, I had lost 7 lbs, and feel like I am still losing weight. Who knows what will happen down the road...so I will try to check back in here and update.
I have a couple theories as to why some gain, and some lose...for the gainers, I read on a lot of websites that they can now "eat whatever they want"....and it seems that they are! Having your gallbladder out is not a license to eat! lol Especially since most of these people admitted to being overweight AND eating fatty/fried foods a LOT...etc.
I have changed my diet, but only a little. I don't eat a ton of fried fatty foods normally, but after a few days of feeling starved right after surgery and eating what felt like a lot; my appetite has decreased some. Had McDonald's the other day with kids(a rarity), which always acts as a laxative for me anyway- and an hour later...I regretted it.
Given the changes that occured after surgery to our digestive systems, like the now constant dumping of bile (although not the concentrated kind our body was used to), some period of adjustment seems to be the norm. I tried to read up on my GB like most of you probably did, and found out quite a bit... (insert all the medical reading I am sure most of us have done on this subject)- we didn't all get our gallbladders removed for the same reason...AND gallstones are caused by several different things. So depending on what caused our need for removal, our reactions to losing our gallbladders will be different, don't you think? :)
It is nice to find others sharing what they have gone through...will check back in soon.

I just had my gallbladder taken out via laproscopy emergency operation and a stent put into my bile duct because of a blcokage. Since July 7 I have lost 12lbs. Sometimes about a lb. a day. I think ist because I've totally changed my diet. No caffiene, low fat/low carb meals and just do not eat as much as I used to. I get full alot quicker os am eating smaller portions.
Hopefully I can keep this weight loss going since I've been overwieght for a very long time. Weigh 253 before the emergecy surgery and now down to 241.
MAybe if I had been eating this healthy before i wouldn't have needed the surgery, Even though I had no prior problems. Until sevre pain in the center of my chest and a vist to the ER.

Hi - Great to find this thread. I am going to have my GB out on Tuesday next week. Over the last few months I have all the different scans, test, MRis and so forth. I have no stones, however they believe my GB is diseased. I go to the toilet 3-4 times in the first half hour of getting up - it's fast! I also wake up with the burn and pain up my back, plus it continues almost constantly throughout the day. I can eat a lettuce leaf and I get the pain, just the same as if I ate something fatty!.. The nausea and fatigue are there too, and I have found it really hard to lost any weight over the past few years. This last year especially since I have had worse symptons, and infact my consultant has said that my weight gain is one (though a small part) of the symptons of having a 'bad' GB. Also although I try to eat a healthy diet, the only thing that stops the constant nausea is actually eating! I am not a vomiter - I was sick for the first time 3 months ago in 20 years (bar giving birth). I just want to get rid of the early morning illness and toilet visits as these wash me out, and the burn up my back and side. I am hoping that when I have had the GB out, then I dont have to 'snack' as I wont feel the constant nausea, and can live on a healthy diet and lose the weight I have gained these past years properly.

I had stones and would have bouts of attacks that would last for a week or more then nothing for months. Eventually had to plan for the surgery. Last thing I needed was for complications in the future like those mentioned by others and having to have open emergency surgery.
I was able to put off sugery for a good time at work waiting several weeks. My room mate made this minestrone soup that was hearty and filling. Although I ate it twice a day it didnt affect by gallbladder and was filling. better than living off juice and crackers. I got the recipe from one of those "good carb"diet books. We added a yukon gold potato too. With the kidney beans it gave protien and a ton of veggies. I reduced the fat by half. (it called for 2 Tbs olive oil to saute onions) so one Tbs and it makes a big dutch oven worth of soup so fat is minimal. Like I said, I could eat several bowls with no problems. if you are really sensitive, be your own best judge. I wanted to share a food I could eat pre-op that got me by.
I am one day post op. sore but haven't needed the pain medicine from the Dr. Just a couple tylenol has been enough as long as I don't move around too too much.

Surgery has extreme thermogenic properties due to the fact that a lot of tissue must now heal and repairing tissue means energy and caloric events. This will cede after 4 -6 weeks ,generally 5-10 lbs are lost initially and this weight will come back with a sedentary lifestyle,so, get fit walking and the weight loss will sustain.
