I agree that this could be a likely diagnosis although I don't think that it would hold true for everyone> Can anyone let us know if they've been diagnosed? Thanks!
Wow! I read through every single post because I've been having the same issue. The only problem I have with the idea of pancreatic inflammation is the fact that most people, including myself, are not experiencing any pain with this....just the weird sensation that a non-existent baby is kicking in our bellies! I'm also ruling out shingles; like I said, no pain, plus no rashes. I've heard or read about abdominal muscle spasms, abdominal migraines, abdominal allergy symptoms....but they still don't match the symptom of painless, persistent fluttering. I mean, my husband and daughter can feel and see my belly move!
I did find an interesting article about "liver quivers" at It talks about how fast food type diets (high fat & sugar, processed foods) put a strain on the liver, which is behind the rib cage in the upper right-hand portion of the abdomen. Has anyone who HAS been to a doctor had their cholesterol levels checked?
Still, I would LOVE for someone who has gone to the doctor and received a DEFINITE DIAGNOSIS, rather than just "try this" advice (which is helpful) to PLEASE tell us what this is?!! Thank you in advanced, as I personally have spent hours searching online, like many others probably have, too.
We need an answer....a diagnosis!!!

I am a male, age 50, very fit. Have had all tests done, including all blood tests (40), endoscopy, h pylori, CT scan with barium contrast, and even a colonoscopy. All completely normal.
I had experienced the fluttering sensation, along with intermittent cramping and burning/stinging, in various locations in my abdomen (sternum to waist). I have a very healthy diet, with low fat, and lots of fruits and vegetables.
My gastroenterologist has me on Librax, 2 capsules, twice daily. I had started on one capsule twice daily which helped my symptoms but did not eliminate them. Doubling the dose has almost completed eliminated the issue.
You may want to ask your doctor about this and give it a try.
I would still like to find out the underlying issue so I don't have to take Librax for the rest of my life, so if anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know.
Thanks.

Thanks, Rocketfish! Your post has been very helpful to me. Although we still don't have a name, at least we have someone who is healthy, has had a complete medical & lab work-up, and come back negative for anything else. The process of elimination seems to be key to diagnosing unusual or atypical problems, like with fibromyalgia where there is no test to diagnosis, but a series of test to find out what it is not. I hope that makes sense.
Anyway, you've given me hope and the name of a medication that may help us all. Thanks, Rocketfish!

I have had the same problem for several months now the fluttering feel right below my rib cage to the left..but I can also feel a bump? about 2 to 3 inches long and I get pain with it now...am also getting a sharp pain in my back at the same time.. The fluttering sensation is irritating but the pain is kinda scaring me. I told my Dr. about the fluttering sensation about a month ago and he looked at it but didn't seem concerned..now that it hurts every so often I am wondering do I find another Doctor who might be a little more interested in it or go back to my old Doctor and let him check it out. The fluttering/pain feeling is staying with me almost all day now also.
I started having this pain in my left upper abdomen also for a week and went to the doctor. Best bet is to get an X-Ray or some kind of imaging on your abdomen. My pain was due to my intestines being blocked up with air bubbles and fecal matter. Gross but true. The reason the pain migrated to my upper abdomen was because my intestines somehow moved all the way above my stomach and spleen. They had moved from their lower normal spot to all the way below my upper ribs. The doctor didn't expain how or why this happened. FYI Peristalsis is not a condition or disease, it's just the medical term for the natural movement of the intestines to move the food along. So peristalsis doesn't explain any pain or certain noises. Best bet is just to visit your doctor so he can send for a scan/image to see what is going on. The reason I got this was because my diet changed from getting my wisdom teeth removed and didn't eat fiber for a long time, just jello. Also, I was on antibiotics for 2 weeks. Amoxicillin can cause intestional problems. There are various reasons for this and it depends on each person, as I am only 20, but the doctor gave me metamucil fiber to regulate my bowels and if it continues to cause me any pain then the doctor will perform an ultrasound. Good luck to everyone and best of health!
I am 37 year old male, slightly overweight, but far from obese, 5'9 195, fairly muscular. I do carry almost all my body fat around my stomach, & I really thought for a while it was just my skin or fat rolls rubbing when I was sitting or hunched over, but appears that is not the case from this post. I am going to get my cholesterol checked as well as my imaging of my gastrointestinal tract & esophogus. Is maybe doing a colon cleanse type of regimen maybe recommended, or will this not assist with this?
ANy answers yet?? These are such old posts and yet no answers... :-( Having same problem and am worried. Is it parasites??
I have to bump this topic....i have a fluttering/rumbling under my ribs on my back, on the left.....what I think is around my kidney...this seems to be a common theme...just looking for the answer to this...here is another thought.....we could all have a mental disorder....i have recently been enrolled in a mental hospital for delusions and psychotic behavior....
I am 20 year old male, quite slender and I have been getting these quivers in the upper-left of my abdomen for a couple of days now usually after I eat something or drink something that contains caffeine like a cup of tea. I've just been trying some breathing exercises but you really have to relax!
I am having the same sensation: a fluttery feeling in my upper left quadrant of my abdomen, below my ribcage. It has been going on for over 2 months now. I had a CT scan with barium contrast as well as intraveneous contrast. Everything looked normal. Has anyone been diagnosed or received answers from their doctors? It is a very annoying sensation that comes and goes all day long. It doesn't matter if I've eaten, if I'm sitting, standing or lying down. It does not hurt at all. I wish I could get an answer one way of the other. I am a 53 year old female.
I'm 41 YO female. Feeling same fluttering below chest, upper abdomen, left side. More often at night. Few days ago had a eco and tech told me strong heart but had 2 little murmurs....didn't give any further info and I'm now waiting for a report. No idea if it can be related to the fluttering. And if so, is it harmless? Of course, since the test been noticing it more. Now worried and need to wait another week for official results. Anyone else think this could be related to a murmur?
I don't know if anyone will get this far into the forum to see my post but here is what I think (I'm not a doctor but just someone who has researched online for awhile). STOP SMOKING POT. Thats right. What most of you are feeling is anxiety.
Here are the symptoms (If you truly fit in this diagnosis):
-Anxiety when sitting upright in your upper abdomen
-Sometimes a lump right below your rib cage in the middle of your chest.
- It only occurs a day or so after being sober (never during or directly after smoking)
What the problem is im not sure. But I do know that anxiety and panic attacks can be brought on by marijuana, we just don't know quite why. Like I said, if it happens a day or so after you've gotten high, you could be having anxiety onset by cannabis.
Once again, I'm not a doctor but this is my theory based on research. So go see a doctor and be honest with them if you do smoke, they are there to help you

I'm 29 and I've been having kicking sensations in my upper abdomen for like the last 2 months consistently, every day several times a day. I had an iud put in last month and the doctor did 2 pregnancy tests b4 putting it in, both of which were negative. A week later when I went back, I asked him about it cause I had heard it might be gas, but I was scared. He told me "I don't know what it is, but I'm sure you are fine" I told him I was worried about becoming one of those women to end up on the show I didn't know I was pregnant. He said the chances of u getting pregnant with and iud are very small. But I had this feeling b4 he put it in..so I waited and sure enough my period showed up on time..but for some reason, its still happening. Went to my family dr. today and he said that it was probably just gas and gave me some meds for it. He said if it doesn't go away to call him. I keep thinking what if they are both wrong. This doesn't feel like gas! It feels like a baby and I've had 5 already. I know what it feels like, and for so long we weren't exactly being careful, we were using the pull out method. I'm kinda scared to take the meds, what if I am..what would that do to the baby if there is one..and at the same time I keep thinking well, I kinda hope he's right. We can't afford the 5 we have now and we are struggling. Part of me really would like to have more some day..that wouldn't be causeing it would it, my body being in conflict over what I want? I made the decision to have the IUD put in so we wouldn't have any more for at least 5 years, but I was fighting with myself to do it. I love babies too much. I'm glad to see I am not alone in this.
dmgoda-
I too have been feeling the fluttering feeling in my upper left abdomen, and was worried I might be pregnant as well, but after taking a few tests within the past couple wks, I'm not. I had a miscarriage a few months ago, and I was worried that maybe the Doctor was wrong, and I didn't miscarry and now I was feeling the baby kick, but I know all those tests wouldn't have come out negative, especially if I were that far along. I do have one child, so I know the feeling of the first stages of feeling a baby kick and move, but I don't have any medical insurance to be seen. I have also been watching that show "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant" a lot lately, and not too long after watching that show, started having the symptoms. I think it's too soon to tell what it is for me, since it's only been about a week, but I just thought it was funny that you mentioned that show! Good luck everyone! :?
