hi to all. i am a male 31 yrs old. i've also been experiencing that painless, weird, annoying fluttering sensation in my upper left abdomen under my ribcage for the past 2 months or so. I went to the doctor and undergone abdomen ultrasound. the doctor found out that I have fatty liver, though im not obese nor into too much drinking alcohols. he said that's the reason behind the fluttering sensation, he then advised me to avoid oily and fatty foods as well as alcoholic drinks. he further prescribed vitamins for the liver. These past 7 days of avoiding fatty foods and taking Livogard 3plus(liver tonic), found myself surprised that the fluttering gradually subsided. the fluttering ranged from barely felt to almost gone now. You may also want to request your doctor to do ultrasound on your abdomen especially on the liver area, your case may be the same as mine. Hoping all of you guys will be well the soonest! Good luck!....

Does it become more pronounced right after eating? Do you, or have you had a pain slightly to the left but not directly over the fluttery site?

I have the same symptoms but the ones I added besides. The pain seems to be related to the hiatal opening and it is possible this means the stomach has come way up into upper chest and the fluttering feeling is the kinking of the esophagus when sitting down and leaning forward a bit.

I realize this is conjecture but I've had hiatus hernia before and it feels like that has happened again but worse than before. I cannot eat very much without feeling full.

Any others who have experience this?

Same thing - only I'm adding some symptoms here. Felt a pain just off center upper chest. The pain felt "on the surface of the chest" This was two months ago and the slight pain has persisted. At the same time this occurred I began getting a fluttering feeling in the upper left side of the chest not necessarily under the ribs. Eating aggravates it and the only time I feel it is when I' sitting down and leaning forward or slouching. When I straighten up. This has been going on for two months now and the fluttering has gotten slightly worse and slightly painful. The fluttering is further over to the left about two inches from where the more central

it is ironic that there are so many similar symptoms and no answers...

There are a number of potential reasons causing abdo and chest fluttering.
The most likely cause is gas in the transverse colon or a very slight blockage due to lack of fibre in the western diet.
Other factors to watchout for are anxiety and panic attack syndrome which can affect normal cardiac impulses.
Although ECG will be normal that is not to say that your heart is 100% healthy as heart rhysthm varies throughout the day and more so through anxiety and panic.

The most likely cause of palpitations is a magnesium and pottasium deficiency or mild anaemia.
But honestly the most common cause is gas, a toxic colon, IBS and lack of fibre.

Cheers. %-)

I consulted my doctor and he suggested the same thing that sitting position causes gas to be forced by up into the upper colon area...he suggested adding fiber and if the fluttering continues to use a Beano. I added water and fiber to diet and the fluttering disappeared completely. XD

I'm having the exact same fluttering sensation as I type this, and it's driving me nuts! One significant difference is that almost everyone describes this sensation on their left side, while mine is on my right side, right below my rib cage. I'm 28, I've never been pregnant and definitely am not pregnant as I am on my period at the moment, so that can be ruled out.

I do drink a lot of coffee (I have a cup on my desk at the moment), so I wonder if that could be contributing to this, because it almost feels like my heart is in overdrive, though my pulse is perfectly normal (68bpm right now, and I've been sitting down for the past hour or so). However, I first had this fluttering last night as I was lying in bed, over 8 hours after I had had my last cup of coffee.

What gives? This doesn't hurt, but it's annoying and distracting, and not having an answer is making it even more frustrating.

Fluttering in the right side of upper adbomen is evenmore likely to be gas as it is further away from the heart.
The caffeine is a factor as it has an impact upon the liver in addition to causing dehydration which will affect the bowel.
The bowel loves water and anxiety is increased through dehydration. It is known as the dehydration alert as more adrenaline is produced. For small blockages and gas: Water, Fibre (regucol or isphigel husks) and prunes are very good. Prunes contain sorbitol which softens the stools and causes relaxation of the colon. If you are anxious or stressed your colon will be tight. I tried Prunes and I couldn't stop farting for 1 hour and then I had a bowel movement. Thanks.

Thanks a lot, that's really helpful. Though I've had my morning cup of coffee today, I have also been drinking water all morning and there's been no fluttering today.

This has been a weird year for me. You see when I was pregnant in 2000, I actually had pain but in the area you are describing. So, I went and had an ultra sound done. They found that my liver was bleeding and that I had an inflammed gallblader. So naturally, when I was having this "crawly" sensation when I am just doing normal life things, it began to bug me. I thought, maybe my gallbladder is acting up again. But I wasn't sure because of the other symptoms I have had prior to all that. In a four month period I have been having servere nausea that felt a lot like motion sickness. I had to go on a acid uptake medication to get that to go away. Then, my on-going Irritable bowel began to fester. I have yet to get it under control and the funny thing is.. I didn't do anything unsual with my diet but I have gained weight. In fact that is because it seems every 1 to 3 hours I am hungry again. Some times I get so bloatted I feel like I can't breath and like I am so swollen but most of the time it just feels like the area we are all describing just gets tight and stays tight and does it's crawly like thing. I had enough so I went and got the ultra sound done. Unbelieveable! they said it looked fine. All they saw was just some bowel gas and a little acid in my stomach but they did see in the ultrasound that spasm. Which was good but didn't say much. They said it had to do with my stomach and the intestines. (Where they are connected) but no information was given. As I can see by all of your comments, it probably wouldn't do me any good to go see the gasterologist. I sure the heck do not want my butt probed. I am only 40 but I am dreading going. Have you seen the movie Alien? Well I feel like one is going to pop right out of me. lol! Food I thought was the culprit but I think it does calm down if my stomach hasn't had food in it for a while and yet it never entirely goes away. I have tried many things. I have tried beano, I have tried different acid uptake recipitors and I have taken tums, anti-diarial (sorry about the spelling and grammar). I have even tried phyazime. It dosen't get rid of that weird crawly sensation. I am sure a doctor will chock it up to IBS or some other retarded thing. So when one of you gets this resolved, I want to know!

I have the same sensation, have had an ultrasound and ct scan, 17 years old, only thing it picked up was some swollen glands, so chances are it's nothing serious (I also suffer from anxiety) but would reccomend getting it checked out

I've had this on and off for the past few years as well. It helps to keep the anxiety down when you realize that so many other people experience this too. It does tend to cause anxiety because it's unnerving and you can't figure out what the heck is going on.

When it first started for me, I wore a blood pressure monitor for 24 hours, and then I had a holter monitor, monitoring my heart, because I thought they were skipped heart beats.

They did an ultrasound, because they were afraid it could be an aneurysm. But everything checked out fine.

They finally put me on a medicine which helps with ulcers and that cleared it right up. Now it's back again, and again I'm trying to keep the anxiety down, which is what led me onto this forum.

It does get worse after eating, or bending over, so I think it does have something to do with the digestive system. It's amazing the amount of trouble some tummy upset can cause. I hate it.

I've been trying to make some better food choices this week and that has helped a lot. I'm choosing a salad instead of a chocolate bar. It's not quite gone yet though. But I don't think it's anything to worry about, as unnerving as it is. Having it on and off over the past few years, I'm realizing that it's not dangerous, but I never seem to get used to the sensation. It still upsets me. I just keep reminding myself of all the tests I took last year and I was okay. I still am okay, even if it does feel like a little alien is living inside of me.
