I'm a 30 year old male that is on day 18 post op.
My story has many similarities to everyone else's apart from the medication, probably because I'm in the UK rather than the US. So my saving grace was co-codamol, a truly great drug for smacking you up and making you not care about the pain! They have a similar weird dreams effect as the person posted above about Percocet. The effect of Co-Codamol verged on open hallucinations at times for me, kept my mind off the pain anyway : ) I couldn't take the Ibuprofen the hospital wanted to prescribe me as Aspirin based products cause my stomach to bleed. So instead I was gargling (and spitting out) soluble/dispersible Aspirin, which helps bridge the gaps between co-codamol.
The night after the operation was the scariest as I woke up with a mouth full of blood. After that I woke every hour with a throat full of blood streaked phlegm that I could only drain by leaning forward and letting it all pour out. The good part was I didn't see anymore blood after day 2. The pain got worse up to day 3 and then eased a bit on day 4 and 5. Day 5 was an interesting one as I could feel something loose in my throat, I gently coughed/gagged into a tissue and brought up a fair sized chunk of flesh! I'm a vegetarian so know it wasn't part of anything I had eaten, it can only have been something left over from the op that hadn't been cleaned away!! haha. I agree with all the posts about the scabs falling off, this is the most painful part and lasted from day 6 through to 8, after which the pain started easing again.
Most of the pain in my throat is now gone, but today is the first day I've been able to open my mouth wide enough to get a look at the back of my throat. Looks (and feels) like there's some swelling still, and there's some white which is probably just scar tissue on them. My only real problem now is ear ache that's been slowly building over the last few days. I'm hoping it's not the start of an infection, and just some difference in pressure in the middle-ear caused by the swelling going down.
Has anyone else had any temporary ear ache problems this late after the op? Apart from the London based person that got an infection and was on Penecillin for weeks!!
For everyone that's still going through the rough days, keep your spirits up, it does get better!

These posts are scaring the heck out of me! o.O
hey all,
I'm a 28 year old female and had my tonsils removed in May this year. Initially told I would have to take 2 weeks off work, ended up taking 4 weeks in the end.
Operation itself was fine, was kept in hospital overnight (as planned) and told by my surgeon the following day that my tonsils were much bigger than originally thought & that it was a good thing that they were removed. Was able to look at my throat when I came back from the surgery first, but then the swelling & jaw pain kicked in (or the anaesthetic wore off!) and I couldn't open my mouth wide any more.
Discharged with prescriptions for antiobiotics, solpadol [co-codamol] (agree with judgecal, these are fantastic things) and difene (anti-inflammatory, think it's diclofenac sodium). Was able to eat and drink straight away and think the massive amount of water I drank was the saving of me - never had the horrible experience others have had of giant scabs falling off, instead small flakes seemed to fall off without me noticing. Did find that some things which were ok to eat/drink some days were impossible on others - eg, I could drink orange juice on days 2 & 3 but then not for about another 2 weeks after that. I found that day 6 was my absolute worst day. Woke up crying with the pain, could only communicate by miming & writing notes! My painkillers ran out after about a week & a half so went back to my GP and was prescribed more painkillers and antiinflammatories and a second week of antibiotics.
Got to the 2 week point & returned to work but realised I wasn't able for it. I was still on 2 solpadol (500mg paracetemol/acetaminophen and 30mgs codeine per tablet) 3 times per day - had to cut down so I had some awareness for work and also so I could drive! Unfortunately, once I cut down I realised the pain wasn't being killed. Back home, back to the doctor, still significant infection at the operation site, yet more antibiotics, painkillers, antiinflammatories.
Finally came off all the drugs after 4 weeks and was ok to return to work at that point. Have had throat infections since, but am still glad that I had my tonsils removed.
Things I learnt over my 4 weeks:
* it's not at all a linear progression of getting better - good days will be followed by bad days then good days again
* water, the whole time, is the best thing to have. it may hurt, but from reading these forums, it seems to hurt a whole lot more if you don't drink water
* icecream - phlegm, phlegm, phlegm. but sometimes when you're feeling sorry for yourself, only icecream will do!
* icepops/popsicles are a lifesaver but calippos are waaay too tough on the poor tongue muscles
* painkillers half an hour before food allow you to eat with some level of comfort
* try to distract yourself from the pain as much as possible, even though it's difficult to do - I had lots of dvds that I planned to watch but realised that I didn't have the attention span to watch 2 hour films (blame the codeine for that) and also with the amount of water I was drinking a lot of breaks would be required! instead i watched a lot of tv shows (only 30 minutes of attention required, a much better idea), read trashy magazines and moaned quite a bit too.
best of luck!

hey everyone
well...I've been peeping in here from time to time to read up on some experiences of tonsillectomy's since I was having one myself. It hasn't exactly been TERRIBLE but it hasn't been a FUN recovery either.....allow me to explain.
I'm 21 years old and this August I discovered I was getting sick. At first I thought it was allergies or the cold until I noticed this "white blister" on my left tonsil. I went to see my doctor twice, one week after another, and I kept getting prescribed antibiotics for something I never had. It wasn't strep throat.....it wasn't a bacterial infection....it was tonsil stones. O_O Now I know some ppl out there are able to live with them just by picking them out every week or so but that wasn't the case for me. Apparently these little buggers caused me a pretty nasty infection....in the pockets they formed a greenish-brown residue (I know cuz I had to see a specialist who took it out and showed it to me....really gross) causing me to be sick all of the time. Now when I say sick I mean sinuses going haywire, mild fevers, lack of sleep, etc. Point being it was affecting my performance in pretty much everything I did including work....sometimes I'd wake up and swear I'd have the flu and the following day I'd be fine. It sucked. I had to put up with that for about a month. x_x
So last Wednesday (9/24) was surgery day to get these tonsils out once and for all, and believe it or not I was anxious to get them out cuz I just wanted to finally feel better! Then things got FUN.....they had to do bloodwork on me which I couldn't donate much cuz I was severly dehydrated from being sick. :-( Luckily they got enough....then they had to prick me 4 times with the IV to find a vein because *ding ding ding* I was dehydrated.....During the surgery I had some minor complications where being congested from all the phlegm, mucus, and infection prevented me from breathing too well....so needless to say when I woke up I was pinned down with an oxygen mask that MADE MY THROAT SO RAW AND DRY. The good news is after all that my temp went back to normal and I stayed overnight, everything went well and they sent me home the next day.
Currently I'm on day 6 of recovery and things are getting a little better for me actually. :-) The med I was put on *Tylenol + Codeine* gave me an allergic reaction....my throat ended up swelling on me and I broke out in hives....so now I'm healing with NO pain meds. :X It's actually not too bad to swallow...but the jaw and tongue pain is whats REALLY hurtin! They clamped my tongue against the side of my tooth causing a huge welting blister when I woke up which hurts to move or touch. I've managed to eat some spegettios, fruit cups, and LOTS of popsicles with no real problem.
So if there's ANY advice I can dish about before and after surgery is this:
1) DRINK LOTS BEFORE SURGERY! Even if you feel like c**p and just want to get it over with....trust me. It'll save you 20 min of pain you won't have to deal with involving needles.
2) After surgery start off small. Focus on the liquids and soft foods you may be able to handle, even if it's in little pieces....it's better than nothing.....and don't FORCE yourself to eat a large heaping if you're not up to it!
3) POPSICLES POPSICLES POPSICLES! nuff said ;-)
4) Believe it or not my beverage of choice that worked best on healing was OJ and applejuice. IDK why but there's something in those juices that just makes swallowing easier for me. :-)
5) Ice packs. If you know you're gunna be sore take an ice pack to bed with you to keep on your throat, jaw, etc. I wrapped mine up in a towel before sleeping so I wouldn't get frostbite.
...the only thing I'm waiting on is the jaw and tongue to finally heal....then maybe I'll be able to fully chew things and swallow nicely instead of gag. All in all...I say PREPARE YOURSELF! It's going to be a doozy! :-P

I had a tonsillectomy with lateral pharyngoplasty on 9/22. So I'm on day 10 now, I think. Anyway. I'm 26, a single female living half-a-continent away from my family. My parents came out for the day of the surgery and my Mom stayed with me for the first three days post surgery. Since then I've been on my own.
The first three days I slept, and slept, and slept. I will recommend pushing water... as much as you can handle, room temperature if you can't handle anything colder. I seemed to be very cold sensitive, so the popsicles and icecream were not the best for me. Room temp water was great.
I started eating slowly by dipping saltine crackers in chicken broth. I slowly worked my way up to chicken soup... then canned ravioli. (Chef Boyardee was on sale... and it worked.)
When it was medicine time, I would take the meds then follow it up with some hot tea or hot chicken broth... which put me right back to sleep. The swelling was pretty bad and I ended up sleeping in my recliner to allow for drainage and to make breathing easier.
I'm still not sleeping in my bed full time. I'm restless at night and bounce between bed and the recliner. I'm not completely back on solid foods... I wouldn't tackle a toasted sub or anything, but I did have a pizza today without the hard part of the crust. I'm still pushing a lot of fluids. Water, Sierra Mist, Fresca, Gatorade, etc.
Right now the only problem I have is an earache. I'm taking advil hoping that it kills the pain. The stitches are starting to come out and itch like crazy though.
Good luck all!!

Dear all,
My daughter is going to have a Tonsillectomy. Can anyone tell me a little more about your procedure of tonsil removal?
what procedure do your doctor recommend: Radiofrequency tonsillectomy or Electrocautery or Coblation tonsillectomy?
I'd like to know which one can reduced postoperative pain and faster recovery. Painless..
Best Regards,
Jenny

I had my tonsils removed on Oct 7th so am on day 6 now. I am 35 and have been in constant pain since I woke from the general anaesthetic. The hospital gave me Brufen syrup, soluble paracetamol and a mouth rinse to take home with me. The Brufen syrup was so thick that it would stick to my tonsils and make them sting like mad so after 4 days I stopped taking it. My breath stinks like rotting bodies and the taste is not pleasant either. I'm cleaning my teeth and using the mouth rinse 4 or 5 times a day but it doesn't help with the smell at all. Yesterday my ears started hurting and the pain is excruciating. I went to a pharmacist last night and they gave me some ibuprofen and codeine pills which takes the edge off the pain but I'm wondering whether I have an ear infection or whether it is just inflammation. It hurts to drink any fluids and I've only managed to eat some very milky weetabix, scrambled egg and a minestrone cup a soup since Tuesday. I've lost 8 pounds in weight so far, which isn't a major problem as I am overweight anyway. Sometimes my nose runs and my head feels like it is splitting. Ice cream doesn't help me at all. I used to get tonsilitis 3 or 4 times a year but at the moment I'm wishing I hadn't had my tonsils removed, the pain is so much worse that I was anticipating. I've had 5 c-sections and this has just got to be worse than any of them.
I am a 33 y-o-f I had my tonsils and adenoids removed on October 17th. It is by far one of the most painful experiences I have ever had. I am grateful to have had my neighbor go thr the same procedure 4 weeks ago as she keeps me abreast on what to expect and how the healing process was for her.
I have lost 10 pounds so far. I haven't ate anything up until last night I was able to eat 1/2 cup of applesauce that was cold. I have only drank ice water teh whole duration since my procedure. I drink tons of it in fear of my scabs drying and cracking. The pain meds do pretty good with controlling it for the most part. But they are also taking a toll on me mentally. My doctor ordered for me to take a warm shower every morning when I wake up and to let the warm water fill my mouth and run out on it's own. It helps to loosen the muscles all up after sleeping. IT does work. Just don't let the water be to hot.
My ice wrap for my neck has been my lifeline since my surgery. I bought a large bag of ice from the store to keep refilling the wrap. I just wish this recovery would be faster than it is and less harsh. My son had it done when he was 6 years old and was eating a nice soft diet meal the next day. I'd never dream of it yet.
The pain in my ears is currently horrendous! I was told this is normal also. The pain defers itself to other areas from the throat. My pain meds have helped to control it anyway.
I've been told that days 4-6 post op are the worst. So far I can't say I agree totally. My ears hurt worse that is about it. But my throat pain has stayed the same. I just wish it would get better. My neighbor is exactly 4 weeks post op and she said she feels great. Although she was eating ore foods than me by this time. I can't possibly imagine. My tongue is still numb on the one side from the clamp they used. I hope that goes away.

Hi, I am post op 13 days now from my Tonsillectomy, the pain is not too bad, hurts down one side, forsome reason. I can't tast things though, just wondered if anyone else had this experience and when there tastebuds came back!! I try and eat as much 'normal' food as possible, it does hurt, but it's like eating cardboard as Ican't taste it!! Any comments would be very helpful.
hi thought i'd add my account as well. I am 37 and from uk. I had my tonsills out 3rd nov 08. Today is 8th - couldn't drink much for 1st day but eventually managed some water after some liquid meds were given. they stang so much that drinking water felt like a breeze. i am now sleeping ok - only waking up once then i fix myself a soluble pain relief. I have found these brill. they numb the pain as it goes down and then you can keep up with the liquids. So far it has not been too terrible. yes occasionally when eat the pain is unbearable and it feels like its stuck but i try and keep going.
I keep coughing up the scabby yuck stuff but i suppose thats better up than swallowing it.
for me i can only say drink water till your sick of it and then drink more.
best wishes for everyone out there waiting for or recovering from a tonsillectomy.
btw anyone got any other ideas for food - i can eat pasta and sauce (not tomato) and i'm sick of soup!

I'm on day 6. I love eating avocado!!! It's cool in temperature and buttery yet non dairy.
I had my tonsillectomy 9 days ago. I also had adenoidectomy, septoplasty, and endoscopic smr of bilateral turbinates.
Im 25, and can agree with most thats been written.
Felt tollerable days 2 and 3. Pulled the packs out of my nose on day 3 and that was a rush, but instantly back to the sinus headaches.
On day 5 i began coughing up blood clots (i believe from my adenoids)
Usually i would wake up to the taste if blood. This happened until yesterday. Days 4-8 were the worst so far, with day 7 being just awful.
I woke up this morning feeling a little less pain, i'm hoping that its not a fluke. I don't think the scabs have fallen off yet.
I've had a really hard time eating or drinking. I couldn't handle pops after day 4. I've lost 15 lbs...and survived on water, cold tea, jello (watered down a bit and mixed around) and sometimes yogurt smoothies!
I didn't discover the tea until day 4, and it really got me through the tough days, as not to need an IV. It's called throat coat tea.
hope this helps

im 23 from Toronto, Canada. my surgery is scheduled for December 18 (yes, one week before Christmas!!) after reading all of these posts, im tempted to cancel the surgery! all of these horror stories about bleeding having to undergo more surgery, etc., is scaring the hell out of me! i'm just hoping that the surgery goes like my wisdom teeth. i had all 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed a few years ago, and i was pretty good, almost no pain, didn't take pain meds, i actually walked to the mall and back that night! so, knock on wood, i'm hoping to have a similar recovery (i know it will be painful, but hoping it isn't as intense as most of these stories!) i also know that its over a month away, and im seriously panicing. i hate hospitals and the whole putting a tube down my throat thing is scaring me too! (they better take it out before i wakeup) i'll keep you posted, but im so nervous i feel like cancelling it.
ps. the worst thing, my tonsils have always been small, no issues until about 4 years one, when one started growing, so the ENT specialist wants to remove it (and hell, if im under, i might aswell get both removed!)
