I am 12 days post op, and I am still needing pain meds, I am still not able to drink a whole lot, and still not able to eat well. I have noticed that my urine is really dark, not sure if that is just due to the lack of water, I am trying to drink but it still feels like I am swallowing razor blades. I have also lost about 18 pounds... starting to get worried. I feel better, but I just want to eat and drink, I am sick of being thirsty and hungry. Anyone else noticed a change in their urine while on the pain meds??
I'm a 27 year old male and I'm also 12 days post op. Recovery is very specific to the individual. I was extremely nervous and expected the worst, but lucked out. I don't know what all factors in to the recovery (age, weight, size of tonsils, etc.), but I was able to eat soft foods right away and was off prescription pain pills by day 3... mainly because they messed with my mind so much. Lots and lots of water helped with the pain more than the pills anyway. I drank at least a gallon a day, so for those of you that can swallow without intense pain I recommend it very highly. Days 7 and 8 were the worst for me... probably because I was sick of liquid food and noodles so I might have eaten solid foods a little too early. Mornings were also bad because I didn't keep up on the water all night long, but the humidifier helped a little. This morning I woke up with a mild sore throat and have been eating solid foods for a couple days now.
Good luck to you all! Hopefully your recovery is as smooth as mine. I don't want to give anyone false hope, but know that it is possible.
I am a 49 yo woman and had my tonsils out on 12/5. I was really worried about getting them out at this age with all the horror stories going around. I decided to do this because I am tired of the tonsillitis that makes me take vacation time and knocks me down for a couple weeks a year or more and I don't want to die at 70 with tonsillitis. My ENT told me that I needed to have them out 20 years ago. So if any of you are contemplating not doing it because of the pain. This is a short time compared to the sickness you will have as you get older. My daughter had her tonsils out 3 years ago. She was down for 3 weeks and said at the time she wouldn't have done it, but now she is glad she did.

Today is day 7. Days 1 and 2 were a breeze. Day 3 was not as good and day 4 the gates of Hell opened up. I stopped taking the tramadol on the 4th day because I hate the way it made me feel. I have been alternating tylenol and ibuprophen. I have been trying to drink but it is really hard when you are swallowing razorblades. I have also had the most awful heartburn. Anyone else? Nights are the worst. Last night I almost started crying. I have to take my meds at 3 hour intervals only at night. Today like the last three days are very manageable. Maybe I should sit up to sleep.

Eating is rather difficult. I can't eat much of anything. Even soup with noodles hurt. It took me an hour to eat a bowl yesterday. Scrambled eggs are ok and I stopped the popcicles 3 days ago. I did have a twinkie last night. I have lost 8 pounds so far, so that is a consolation. I am going to try baby food.

Every day I hope that it will get better. My throat is white, yuck. I guess those are the scabs. I know this will be worth it eventually. Right now, I want a burger and pizza!!!!!
I'm 22 and currently on day 3. I'm also a bit of a hypochondriac who will think he's running into horrible post-op problems, so keep that in mind. I believe my surgery was the infrared heat waves or something, I'm not sure.

In any case, a diet of Popsicle and ice chips for the first day. The pain was there and I wasn't as groggy as I would've liked from the meds. Didn't even try normal food.

Day 2 was more of the same. Popsicles and ice chips are easy to get down, but water isn't. My tongue is still swollen and I think that's where the most of the pain is coming from. I had jello, ice chips, and more popsicles and watched as my family ate a beautiful pizza. Jerks.

On Day 3 now. I don't like to talk, that's starting to be difficult. I was brave this morning and had a banana and some vanilla yogurt for breakfast. Took me a bit to eat both, but they both went down fairly well. Going to try some broth today, too.

All three days I didn't sleep well, but apparently the catnaps from the meds were enough to keep me going without feeling too groggy throughout the day.

I'm trying to stay hydrated, I haven't noticed any sense of dehydration, as the steady diet of ice chips apparently helps.

The majority of pain seems to be coming from the tongue still. It's really difficult to try and teach yourself how to swallow again. So far, there's been no blood. I've been snoring quite a bit, though, is that bad for the healing process?

What I'm more curious about is when should I expect the white, disgusting caverns in the back of my mouth to turn pink and heal?
I'm on Day 6 of recovery....The first day of Surgery I was fine. I think it was from all the pain medicine they had given me at the hospital. The next day was terrible. It was so hard to eat and after I took percocet it would only make me sick and made me feel worse. On day 3 & 4 I got into a routine of making myself eat every 4 hours taking meds and sleeping. Day 5 I was surprisingly feeling really good. I even ate Pizza from Pizza Hut and decided if I was feeling soo I would just take Ibuoprofen for pain. Well that made it worse that night when I couldnt sleep. So now I'm starting the pain cycle over again taking my meds every 4 hours again. Its improving but not fast enough. The pain in my ears is very annoying soo I'm hoping it gets better soon. My neck is swollen but I use ice all the time and I;m going to try to gargle some salt water.
Well, I'm a full 7 days post-op. My doc said I would be getting back to normal about now. Boy was he wrong! Granted, I'm sure it's different for everyone, but I share a lot of the experiences with the others on here. Day 1 was a blur of medication and sleep. Days 2 and 3 were cheerfully spent drinking water on the couch, wondering what all the fuss over this surgery was for. Day 4 was a rude awakening. The pain kicked up a notch, even talking hurt. I thought I was beggining to understand everyone's complaints. Then came Day 5. Even the ice cold water that my doctor said would help felt like I was drinking razorblades. There was minor bleeding and the ear-aches started. Day 6 was the same only I had to go back to work. Today is day 7. Still not eating anything with substance. For some strange reason only my left side is bothering me now. My left ear throbs and the left side of my mouth is excruciating when I swallow. I'm hoping to get some real food soon.

I'm certainly not trying to scare anyone, just share my experience. I feel like my doctor significantly underemphasized the level and duration of pain so I was definitely not prepared to still be taking prescription pain meds. I'm sure this will be worth it in the long run. Just be prepared for one long, brutal ride to get through it...
I am on day six past my tonsillectomy, and I am a painful disgusting blob. Ive lost ten pounds (lately Ive been trying to gain weight)! I am 20 years old female and am home for Christmas Break. My parents tell me my breath smells like a corpse. Well it tastes like it too. My surgery was pretty awful because I had abscesses that were eating into the muscle in the back of my throat. The doctor said he's never had to perform such an awful tonsillectomy. Since my cauterized holes are slightly bigger than the average tonsillectomy, my pain will be worse, doc said. Day one was fine, a breeze, actually. day two was equally pleasant. Day three hit me....ouch, day four was worse, and day five was the worst. The problem is, the doc didnt prescribe enough pain meds because i ran out of them on day five. Now I am taking vicadin tablets leftover from my multiple bouts of tonsillar abscesses. I have to cut them into tiny bits though, and sometimes they get stuck in the enormous golf-ball like hole in the back of my throat where the doc had to cauterize the abscess.
so I was hoping by day six i would be better. just last night a bit of my scab came off, but nothing since then. i am just moping around, stinking up the house with my corpse-breath. when my brother comes home i can torture him with the stench. thats the only fun part about being a smelly gross person. oh i just hope i am better by christmas. i want to be able to gorge on christmas food yumm! but i am still just eating soft foods because chewing hurts the muscles in the side of my mouth and th back of my throat, probably because of the stupid abscess eating away at them. Did anyone else feel like their doc underprescribed the pain meds?
Can someone plz let me know, how much it costs for Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy with and without insurance?

What would be the total cost from start to end..? Thanks

I am trying to go for it, if i can afford it.
I'm halfway through day 4 following tonsillectomy/sinus/turbinate reduction surgery. My throat is the least of my pains - the worst is the searing earache in BOTH ears - it follows drinking anything cold, or putting my head down to sleep. Big mistake-the pressure builds. Also getting through the nights alone in 3 hour increments is miserable. My husband came down with shingles two nights before my surgery so he's in his own painful hell...neither of us can pamper the other much, but at least he can sleep & eat!!

I have a nasty nauseous headache from the cough syrup-it's really rough stuff. I bought some heating pads for my ears, they cut the pain immediately, and I'm hoping to wean off the narcotics. There's no goo, no discernable odor, and the scabs are not going anywhere yet. I hope this is the worst of it! I really missed eating xmas dinner, and drinking hot cups of coffee.
I am a 24 year old female who had my tonsils removed on December 30th. About three weeks earlier, I had just finished a ten day round of antibiotics for strep throat. And the day before my surgery, it had returned. Both tonsils were grossly infected and the doctor decided that the frequency of infection had gotten too severe. I was ready to pull the tonsils out myself, so learning I was going to have them removed made me quite happy. Now here it is ten days post op and here is my experience:

Day 1: I had my surgery around 4 in the afternoon. After surgery, I was still a bit groggy, but I remember thinking how much better I felt with those tonsils gone. I ended up staying overnight.

Day 2: I was actually surprised to say I felt a ton better than I did before surgery. I was thinking I must have some high tolerance to pain!! I was too scared to eat anything, and wasn't really that hungry, so I tried to sip on apple juice. I found it much better than water. And I wanted the apple juice room temperature, anything cold hurt my throat.

Day 3-6: HORRIBLE!! I was truly regretting the surgery. The pain was a constant dull pain, with a sharp piercing pain when I swallowed. I will admit that I did not drink as much as I should have, so that might have made the pain worse. I took the codine elixir every three hours, because it just doesn't last the full four to six hours. Tried pudding- big mistake. The consistency of the pudding made it stick to the back of my throat and I felt like I had to swallow violently to get it down. Ate two bites, and then was done. Had maybe two or three popsicles.

Day 4-7: The pain started to become a little more bearable. Still take pain medication every three hours. Already have gotten MORE elixir as I had taken it all. Still no food. I am literally starving!! I have lost 14 pounds and honestly would gain it all back for the ability to be FULL...

Day 8-9: I can feel a slight difference. On day 9 I actually felt pretty good. I thought it was time to try some Mac and Cheese. Ate about two spoonfuls. BIG MISTAKE. My throat was more sore than ever. Suffered the rest of the day. I woke up the next morning and noticed tongue coated in this white c**p that tasted HORRIBLE. Found out it was just part of the scabbing process. Still taking pain meds constantly.

And today is day ten. I have been drinking SOOO much water thanks to the tips I read on here, and it actually HELPS soo much. At first it is uncomfortable, but once you are drinking, it feels great. I drink it WITHOUT ice, just straight room temp. Scab c**p is no longer on my tongue. I just brushed really good. I think the scabs are starting to come off. I can feel it in the back of my throat. It doesn't really gross me out though. I haven't had any bleeding at all. Thats a relief for me. I haven't puked either. When it's that cold, it seems to burn my throat. I still have not eaten anything. Still taking the liquid loratab with codine.

* Drink water, I didn't at first and paid for it. Tried it later, and it really does work.

* Mornings SUCK! Your mouth gets dry and there has been a large gap in time since you took the pain med. I set my alarm clock every three hours. (I don't like pain. :-) Setting the alarm clock to take your pain med sounds silly, but it HELPS)

* Brush with your face forward so the toothpaste comes out. Its hard to spit, hard to explain that, but you will understand when you try to brush your teeth.

* lukewarm tea is also great. I didn't try it until day 6 or 7, but it helped too.

Best part about this is losing 14 pounds and not smoking anymore. Worst part, STARVING. Im probably going to gain all that weight back as soon as I eat cause I plan on eating EVERYTHING!! :-)
I am a 19 year old female who had my tonsils out on Jan 12. Going into the surgery I was very nervous about the pain I would be experiencing during my recovery...and boy was I right!

The actual surgery wasn't that bad. Very quick and after I came out, I didn't hurt all that bad. The first night however was terrible. Due to the pain I had and lack of relief from the percocet, I was unable to sleep. Drinking, even water felt like I was swallowing screws.

Day 2 and 3 were pretty severe. My diet consisted of applesauce, ice cream, frozen yogurt and yogurt. Swallowing was painful, even saliva.

Day 4 I started to feel very weak, shaky, and just night right. After a call to my doctor, he told me that I was dehydrated and needed to up my beverage intake. This was a painful process as drinking was very painful, but in the end I found tremendous improvement.

Day 5 I was feeling decent, still in pain but with the medicine I could almost not feel it.

And then today, I went back a step. I think one of my scabs fell of when taking my pain medicine early this morning because I have severe burning on the left side of my throat. Feels like i'm back on day 2. Also i'm finding talking to be a bit hard. It feels like I have gunk in the back of my mouth, like peanut butter, which makes it bubble? i can't explain, but makes some words hard to say.

Reading other descriptions I wish I was having the great recovery some have had. I think though the best recommendation, and what I need to do more as well, is drink more. It is painful, but it seems to help the pain and the healing process go by quicker. I'm leaving to go back to school this upcoming weekend and i'm worried that i'm still going to be on my soft food diet by the time I return.
Hi, I'm 24 and from England.

I had mine out 5 days ago, all was going well for me, left hospital on Thursday, eating crunchy food like they told me too. But then, I couldn't stop throwing up Thursday night, come Friday morning, I was exhausted. Friday I had the worst diarrhea, so for two days everything that was going in, was coming straight back out.

Am doing well now, eating loads of different foods. One thing I can't work out, is half my bottom lip has little feeling in it, and I have a strange lump in my vein where the drips were put in. Am seeing Dr tomorrow, for more pain killers...

So far it's not as bad as I expected, just wish the Dr's did this 15 yrs ago... rather than waiting until now
Hello im 15 years old and had my tonsils taken out on the 16th of january i am now on day 8 and still in pain this really sucks today i coughed up a redish purple clump and it tasted horrible to where i almost threw up now that taste is still lingering in my mouth and is discusting i still cant talk and im still spitting every 5 seconds im off my pain meds because they made me miserable i have been living off of noodles and water and vitamin water (actually the vitamin water helps a lot the power-c dragon fruit it gets rid of the nasty taste and it doesn't burn it just goes down smoothly) the doctor told me i would be better after a week and well i have found that this wasn't true. im seeing some of you are on your second week and still in pain im really not looking forward to the next few days honestly i regret having this done because i could have lived with the tonsil stones this is probably the most annoying thing i have ever had to go through guess im jsut having a bad experience with this whole thing
I am 31 years old and got my tonsils removed this morning. So far so good! The only thing I feel is a little discomfort in swallowing. I am taking my meds every 4 hours, drinking lots of fluids and peeing a lot…hehehe…I hope to be feeling as good as I am now for the next week or two. After reading the posting I got a little scared before the surgery and almost gave up. But just thinking about the pros I do not regret the surgery. It is not completely pain free, but if you just get distracted with tv, books or even computer work, if you can, you will end up forgetting the discomfort.
I am a 34 year old female.. I am on day 6 and am feeling terrible burning - even with ice water. At first, I thought it was crazy to schedule two weeks off for recovery! That is clearly not the case. I wasn't very nervous for the surgery, and was doing ok my first 2 or 3 days. On day 4, I thought I would try to take the pain meds 6 to 7 hours apart - BIG mistake! I am sure all this burning is part of the healing process and will be dedicated to pain medicine every 4 hours until my body says its time! I am still glad I went through with everything.. Hopefully, no more sore throats!
