Hi, this is my first winter of running. Right now the weather hasn't gotton too cold. It will soon though. When it does, what is the best winter gear that I should use and feel comfortable in? Any advice is appreciated.
I use underearmor as a base and then layer it. but u can get the same type of wicking stuff at walmart for cheaper that does almost as good a job. do a search about running in the cold; last year someone posted a website that discusses what to wear during different temps.

I'll 2nd the Under Armor. It's great stuff but expensive. If you have a Marshalls/TJ Maxx or Rossby you, sometimes you can find it there for dirt cheap.
Hey PH,
that's good info. il take start checking those places every now and then myself.

Where do you live? How cold does it get? Minnesota winter running is probably quite a bit different from Atlanta winter running.
The Champion 'C9' stuff you can find at Target is good for your under layers. I wear the 'thermal' long-sleeve under a Brooks Vapor-Dry half-zip on top, and Brooks Vapor-Dry tights for the lower half. My runs are no more than 25 minutes, so it keeps me adequately warm for the duration.
I'm in Tuscaloosa, Al., and I can't stand to run when the wind is blowing in my face. It slows me down and makes it a more difficult challenge!
You could always go the loser route and by a treadmill. :?
I really doubt you're going to need extensive amounts of winter gear in Alabama. I know you get the occasional 20 degree night but I also know things warm up by the afternoon. Try running at 20 degrees with a 15 mph wind, and about 8 - 12 inches of old snow on the ground.
As long as you stay away from cotton, get any good syntethic stuff at Wal Mart or Target... (This includes undies) Under Armor Cold Gear is fantastic but very expensive. Cool Max is also good for an outer layer. Once you get moving you will not feel the cold. In fact, with a good workout you can work up a good sweat anytime of the year.
You can also look at the winter Running thread (Montreal) a bit further down.

Wind is the enemy. If you have trouble wearing a balaclava, try a light coat of Vaseline on your face to take the sting out of the cold wind.
It's very cold here. It's difficult to run in the wine. What do ya wear in the evening to keep the wind off????

With this sort of weather, I'd say shorts/running pants and a long sleeve shirt and if you're still chilly to have on a t-shirt underneath the long sleeve (the t could be a cool max). Hat if your head is cold. light gloves if your hands are cold. After the first mile you should warm up pretty quickly. Try starting your run into the wind so you can finish with the wind at your back.

Pug is correct.
The basic rule of thumb to choose running clothes is to wear what you would be comfortable in at 20 degrees warmer. For 40 degrees - wear your 60 degree outfit.
A long sleeve T and a base layer Cool Max t should keep you warm enough. Don't make the mistake of over dressing. If you do you'll be very uncomfortable after a quarter mile. Regular, lined running shorts, gloves and a light hat should complete the outfit.
Trust us "eskimo people". We know about cold. If it was 40ish in January where we live we'd be there in shorts and a plain t shirt.
What kind of clothes should I wear for winter running?
I doubt what to wear in winter, because I don't like to wear thick clothes, only jacket for running.
