I get the white painful bump on the side of my tongue, BUT ONLY AFTER I DRINK AN alcoholic BEVERAGE!!! Does this sound familiar? Stop drinking for a month and they will go away. Have one drink and I guarantee you'll have a white painful bump the next day. It took me 30 years to figure this out. (I'm 50).

Don't bite it off. That'll just cause more problems. Just brush your teeth everyday and mouthwash as much as possible. It is caused by a food you recently ate that you don't normally eat or something in the air, or even a new brand of painkillers. Just brush your teeth and use mouth wash, and it'll go away soon. Don't mess with it like I do, or else it will never go away @.@

What some of your folks may have is Lichen Planus in your mouth. If the white patch then turns red and stays sore for a time, it could be Erosive Lichen Planus. There is no know cause or cure. It is an auto-immune disease. A dermatologist is the best doctor to see about it.

I have this very same thing. A zit like bump on the side of my tongue. I am glad some of you are trying to come up with possible answers, however, please try to stay on the subject. The pictures of Lichen Planus look nothing like a small zit. Bumps on top or tip of the tongue or multiple bumps are not it either. Also, irritated taste buds are not it either. This is a zit like bump on the side of the tonge where there are no taste buds. I feel like I am wasting my time anyway on this because in the 2 years since this originally posted, I have not seen any "expert" opinion. I'm frustrated!!!

i bit mine off too it just bled and then later on turned into little brown dots! my advice is plz dont do that! now i have like 3 or 4 and they really hurt.i have no idea what they come from but someone said herpes and thats not it because im not to that level in my life in which i do things to get herpes. so i was just looking it up and it might be from to much acids or sugars in the body.

hm..well in my family we call them liars bumps.
They seem to show up right after you tell a lie ;-)
But they go away on their own. I've never had one that lasted more than a day. I was told its just dead taste buds that havent fallen off properly (and yes, they fall off)

I was reading this discussion last night because I had a painful white sore develop under my tongue. I woke up this morning and my tongue was still sore but I have some swelling on the right hand side of my mouth so I decided to go to my doctor. Good thing I did because it is a CANKER SORE and left untreated it can spread in your mouth. The doctor told me not to touch it or try to pop it. He gave me a prescription that he told me to apply via q-tip. I drink coffee every morning so he thinks the acid from that and my mouthwash aggravated it. I was told to stay away from anything acidic until the sore goes away.
The doctor also suggested rinsing my mouth with a Milk of Magnesia and liquid Benadryl to take down the swelling (mix the 2 together go light on the Benadryl).
This is what my doctor suggested to me. I suggest if your mouth is infected you have a professional look at it just to make sure it isn't something worse.

I get these sore every once in awhile, but it seems like that is too often and so i have been contemplating going to the doctor. i have been getting them since i was a little kid. it looks almost like the bumps are just enlarged cilia on your tongue, like maybe just one or two cilia are infected with something. i currently have about 6 on my tongue right now in a little patch. hardly any websites have answers to this, they suggest things like leukoplakia which is pre-cancerous, but it cant be cuz this has been happening to me on occasion for probably 8 years. they are very irritating i know, but if youre brave enough, cutting them off does work...once theyre gone it doesent hurt at all, but the process is a b***h. ue ans ice cube, or anbesol to numb the area, and then you can squeeze and pull with tweezers, cut with a razorblade or X-acto knife, snip with nail clippers, or maybe even bite if you want.

I had one of these and I started questioning my students about it. They all told me to pull it off. I also asked the music teacher and she said the same thing. She went on to say that she had had one before and that she just pulled it off and it immediately stopped hurting. So when I got home I got my 8x's magnyfying mirror and found it and pulled it off. Guess what! It immediately stopped hurting. I wish that I had asked them about this 4 days earlier!

More than likely, you all have a condition known as transient lingual papillitis. It's completely harmless and is simply an inflammation of the papillae on your tongue. This happens quite commonly when you have a viral infection, similar to how your glands become swollen. It's simply part of your immune response...so it's no surprise you all happen to be sick at the same time! :-)

Whatever you do, DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE YOUR PAPILLAE!!! These are those things which give you our wonderful sense of taste. Don't be insane...let your body have its normal immune response cycle and things will then go back to normal.

Take care and good luck,

Michael
