Why So Dry?

As you look down to your extremely dry feet, you may be wondering, why are they so dry? Well, conditions like diabetes, believe it or not, can actually have a huge effect on the condition and well-being of your feet. Standing for too long, standing with bare feet on hard or tiled floors and even just wearing sandals with an open back can all cause cracked, dry heels and sore feet. If you're an athlete or even just someone who walk their dogs regularly, you might also notice that your feet are very dry and sore due to being on your feet all the time, but luckily for you, there are a few lifestyle changes that you can quite easily implement into your life to improve the condition of the skin from the inside out.

And if these lifestyle tips don't end up working for you? Not to worry - we've put together a list of five brilliant homemade beauty treatments that'll really nourish and treat your dry and cracked feet.

Be Nice To Your Feet

This may sound really obvious to you, but for soft, smooth and lovely feet, you need to be nice to them!

This means you should eat foods that are enriched with calcium, such as milk, cheese and yogurt. Make sure to also include plenty of different colored fruits and vegetables in your diet for a huge range of vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants that will help to repair any damage to your feet. Keep in mind that getting more vitamins won't just improve your feet, but will overall help you be a healthy person.

Wear soft, breathable cotton socks as these will allow sweat to evaporate off, preventing irritation caused by dried sweat, and choose comfortable, supportive, closed shoes that'll support your feet when walking and standing. If you regularly go running, don't forget - wear running shoes!

Hard Skin Vs. Dead Skin

The reason that feet are often a little dry, cracked and unkempt-looking is due to a build-up of excess dead skin.Because we're constantly on our feet, they take a bit of a battering.

The thick, often slightly yellowed skin around toes and on heels is actually completely necessary - without this hardened layer, skin underneath would easily break down causing further damage.

Sometimes, though, the hardened skin can become too hard and will need to be treated. Dead skin, on the other hand, which is often white in color, should be removed - and luckily, it's really easy to do so.

5 Homemade Beauty Treatments For Feet

Hard skin needs to be filed away as gently as possible with a fine grit foot file. Use vigorous strokes but be really careful to avoid areas of healthy skin. Once you've filed the hard skin down, nourish with a urea moisturizer - urea is a bit of a magnet for moisture and if you apply it every day, your skin will be softer and much more supple.

For dry skin, you'll need to use a bit of a two-pronged attack: exfoliation and soaks, and plenty of nourishing moisturizer.

Epsom Soak

Epsom salts are a sedative for the nervous system, and when magnesium sulfate (what Epsom salts are made of) is absorbed through the skin when you take a bath or soak your feet, it works to draw out toxins from the body, relaxing muscles and reducing swelling. It's also a great exfoliator and will work to soften and smooth your feet. Putting the salts into a foot soak is a brilliant way to prepare your feet for moisturizer.

Dissolve 1/2 cup Epsom salts in warm water and add the essential oils of your choice, then soak for 10 minutes before patting dry.

Sugar Scrub

Mix 4 tbsp. of caster sugar with about 1/2 cup of the oil of your choice.

Most oils are nourishing, but you'll also find that almond oil, olive oil and coconut oil are particularly nourishing, as they're plant-based. For scent, you could add a couple of drops of essential oils. Soak feet in a combination of warm water and feet (milk is wonderfully nourishing) for around 10 minutes to soften and loosen dry skin. Massage the scrub onto feet in circular motions, then rinse off. Apply a moisturizer to nourish feet further.

Tea Tree and Mint Scrub

Sterilize a jar and fill in 2/4 of the way with sea salt. Cover the sea salt with a carrier oil, such as almond, coconut or olive oil until it sits a few mm about the top of the salt. Add 6 drops each of tea tree essential oil and mint essential oil and stir well. To use, gently massage into feet and toes in a circular motion after soaking feet in warm water. Rinse off, pat dry and moisturize.

Honey and Buttermilk Mask

Honey is incredibly nourishing and is perfect for using on feet it contains hundreds of vitamins and minerals as well as a number of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It's also moisturizing, making it a great addition to any homemade beauty treatment for feet.

Stir together 1 cup of organic honey, 1/4 cup of buttermilk and a tablespoon of olive oil. Before applying the mask, use a soak and a foot scrub to slough away dead skin cells so that the mask can penetrate deep into the skin.

Leave the mask on for an hour or so, then soak your feet in warm water to dissolve it.

Strawberry and Vitamin E Mask

Mash two strawberries and add a broken vitamin E capsule, along with 5 tbsp. coconut oil, 1 tbsp. olive oil and a few drops of mint or tea tree essential oil. Massage into feet, cover with socks and leave on overnight. In the morning, you'll have silky soft skin!
