I have to share that I discovered that my gums started itching tonight after eating fruits - I do have some weird allergy / sensitivity to certian fruits (or in my opinion probably to certain pesticides in the fruits) which causes my lips to itch and burn (it's not a huge alleric reaction ususally just irritation that lasts 10-15 mins or so) - I didn't have an episode for over 6 months and tonight just after eating these cherries and feeling the irritation I now have the urge to scratch my gums at "the spot" - which I SHALL resist!!! So this is one of my triggers it seems, and also certain red wines...it might be sensitivity to some acid too, I don't know...:(

I have Bruxism and have been wearing a night guard for over two years now and it's not helping the itchiness of the gums. My dentist also have no idea what's going on since I have great oral hygiene and get my teeth cleaned regularly.
The dentist thinks it might be my toothpaste so he suggests that I change it to the simplest toothpaste ever. I have done this for two days but it's still itching. I'll update this post too if it goes away with this new trick.

That is exactly what I do! I made the mistake of scratching my gums with a salt/vinegar mix. I lost gum tissue, and will need grafting now. I'm wondering if the new tissue will itch, too. (?) I am in my 50's, and the itching has been going on since I was a teenager.

All of the reply's in this thread are very similar to this one. You all share the same condition but as it goes you all have this one spot you like ot poke, because it feels good. You are all suffering from an ADDICTION. It is not genetics, it is not some sinus problem, its not from possibly having or getting a cold, the truth is , is you like the way it feels and no matter what, you continue to do it, even if that means getting a skin graph , having new gums and then picking them away because it feels good. That's why you can't stop but really you all need to, you know its wrong and un healthy and bad and that you can break this addiction, stopping is the only way, and trying to pin it on some thing like oh my grandma did it, or i think its genetics is just wrong, and searching for an answer that way will always come up with 0 results. This is something you do that likely comforts you but its the wrong type of thing to do and you know it. It's an addiction.

This is so true for me!

I googled why do my teeth itch after eating meat. After porks and steaks they get so itchy. I have also dug toothpics, pen caps anything bluntly sharp into my gims since I was a child.

Is it weird that I love the way it feels to "hurt my gums" I can't explain it. I just love the feeling. The itch is never unbareable but annoying. It can (when I am chewing the meat) have the same satisfactory "pain" from the toothpicks, but once I am done chewing the itching starts.

I don't have gaps that some were speaking of as my mouth is already too small for my teeth.

Glad to know I am not alone.

I've used the orgasm analogy when describing the pleasure/pain experience. I read a physician's explanation (unfortunately I can't find the site). It does not Stem from OCD, bipolar or any other such disorder (though they may cause obsessive responses to the physiological reality.) When one has an itch, it is relieved when the itch is scratched. Apparently there is a mechanism in the brain that doesn't recognize that the itch has been scratched, and though the scratching, poking, picking, is pleasurable, the offending sensation continues.A It seems that this can on occur any part of the body, in my experience it is only in my gums.

The itching is not due to periodontitis. I have impeccable oral hygiene, literally no plaque, no calculus, no bone loss or attachment loss - yet I get itchy gums after exercising as well. It only happens when I'm out of shape. Once I start working out more regularly, the itching stops

I've commented on this forum before as a guest, been watching it for 2 years and I finally have an answer. It's not what you want to hear, but I believe it's the answer. ITS AUTOIMMUNE.  There are hundreds of autoimmune disorders out there, some more severe than others. Recently I was diagonosed with severe leaky gut syndrome, or as some docs call it, intestinal permeability. Long story short, once I started putting all the research together, and changed myh diet, my gum itch started disappearing. I'm 43 years old, and my gums have been itching since I was 8 years old. That's over 35 years. I now know that my gut problems, even at the age of 8, were directly linked to my gum itch. It makes total sense, since that when I started having problems and "mystery illnesses." I'm telling you- do some research, fix your gut, and your gums will stop itching. The path for everyone will be varied and individual, but your best bet is to get tested for food sensitivities- you probably have more than you realize. If you don't have insurance, get an envelope and put back 10-20 per week until you save 400. It could be the beginning of saving your health. Your gum itch is only a symptom of a bigger problem. Start now.

I've had itchy gums on and off for years too, it's so annoying. I get bad sinuses and when there is any mucus they start itching. I think its an allergic reaction. Sugar and too much dairy sets off my sinuses which then drain down the back of my throat and set off my gums, short term anti-histamines help and I find that Potters antifect tablets (UK) help clear my sinuses but if i avoid sugar altogether it also sorts out. Its the most annoying thing in the world!!!

It's me again -- I originally posted this in 2008.  Thanks, Dr. Gupta for weighing in.  This post is meant for folks like me who have already been examined for and ruled out periodontal disease, bruxism, abnormal contact, and bacterial overgrowth in deep sulci.

I recently heard about a new development - not so much an explanation of the cause, but a somewhat scientific home remedy for the symptom.

I tried rubbing wasabi directly on my gingiva where they itch.  Results in temporary relief!  Maybe the wasabi receptor research will result in some treatment options in the future.
